[MODPOST] Reminder that AI-generated responses are not permitted

Moderator Post

Over the past week or so, we have noticed a huge uptake in AI-produced stories. Sometimes people openly say they are AI, other times people try to hide it. Either way, the last week has been a problem.

To be clear

AI-generated responses are not allowed on r/WritingPrompts.

It is included as a subsection of rule 1 of the subreddit and has been there for a very long time.

No joke, copypasta, or AI-generated responses

AI-generated stories will be removed from the sub, and the authors likely banned without warning.

If you see a story that you suspect is written by AI then please report it so we can have a look.

To answer a couple of questions people may have about this.

Why are you making this post?

Because we have had so, so, so many AI-generated stories lately we felt an announcement to the community was warranted. We hope that (a) some people will see this and not post their AI-generated stories, and (b) people may be more willing to report stories we have missed,

Why not allow AI-generated stories?

The purpose of this sub is to inspire authors. We want to give aspiring authors a place to practice their craft and give them small ideas that may spark an interesting story. We are not a sub dedicated, or interested in, being a playground for AI tools. There are plenty of other subs for that. Needless to say that given how easily AI-generated stories can be made and posted that if they were allowed they would likely quickly outnumber the number of stories written by actual authors.

How do the mods tell if a story is AI?

We're not going to get into the specifics as this encourages people to find ways around the rules. What we will say is we use a mixture of features that use both our own experience and judgment, as well as machine tools. We only remove once we feel that there is a significant burden of evidence, and don't just remove every story that someone says might be AI.

What if I suspect a story is AI-generated?

Report it, so we can have a look. As with any rule breaks, we'd rather have false-positives - reported stories that we as a modteam decide can stay - than false negatives - stories that are rule-breaking that we miss. Obviously don't just report every story you see, but if you are suspicious, please report it.

Can I call the author nasty things if the story is AI-generated?

No. Rule 3 still exists.

i love mods

I expected tge surge of AI generated stories, I'm glad it was immediately addressed. For the past week several youtubers have showcased ChatGPT, so it was inevitable.

I was wondering if this subreddit would address it. Good on you guys for making this clear.

I'm really glad they did. AI media is produced on large-scale IP theft by its very nature and I don't think it has a place on creative writing boards personally.

Is copying theft?

you mean plagiarism? yes.

now there's an entire debate about preservation vs copyright in the realm of digital piracy, but in the narrow case of this subreddit copying is absolutely theft.

How? Does the original vanish when it is copied?

I don’t really like calling this theft. Unauthorized copying, sure, but theft takes from the owner. Copying does not.

As an admirer of the humans who write here, thank you :)

It's kind of sad that this reminder had to be made.

Prompt writing is a creative exercise, if you want something to read without that exercise then you can read other people's writing, be it paid or free.

both reading and writing are vital part of this subreddit's experience, but feeding prompts to AI and pasting the result here was basically neither reading or writing so AI-posters basically has no place here.

I have moved to Lemmy due to the 2023 API changes, if you would like a copy of this original comment/post, please message me here: https://lemmy.world/u/moosetwin or https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/u/moosetwin

If you are unable to reach me there, I have likely moved instances, and you should look for a u/moosetwin.

Only a couple paragraphs long and doesn't follow the prompt well.

About the second part, it's worth mentioning that, "responses don't have to fulfill every detail." We put that on every sticky comment as a reminder the point of the prompts is to be inspired. So, if someone has an idea that doesn't quite fit, that's okay too 🙂

In general this is a bad question to answer, because the answers help the people who design these things to make it harder to spot in the future.

Such posts are easy to spot when you know what to look for. If you read enough stories, they really start to stand out. I recommend reading more stories!

So that's why I keep finding more deleted stories recently. Nice to know, thanks :-)

Anyone else think this was the prompt?

Ha lol! You should write a story to the prompt then!

New to Reddit and just want to say thank you and I am impressed with how well the whole place is moderated. Makes me feel more comfortable and looked after.

Thank you. I’m so sick of the AI stuff

Can anyone link an example of an AI generated story? So far i havent noticed a single once i joined this sub

You have suddenly become my favourite place on Reddit. I read most of the stories and I love them. I am writing a book on my own and studying different techniques to learn more about writing, and this place....this damn god blessed place... it's like a shining beacon of hope for people like me.

Thank you!

Based reddit moderator

My half awake mind started reading this as a story and found the first line interesting....

thank you!!!! I'm so glad you're taking this stance

based mod announcement!

Why has there been a sudden uptick? Has there been some news story I missed? In the last week or so I’ve come across AI generated writing being discussed much more frequently elsewhere too. Just curious- very glad and appreciative of mods takings steps to combat it.

OpenAI released ChatGPT, a language processing model that is available to the public and can be used freely, unlike their previous release known as GPT-3.

AI generated stories also really suck

You are most kind.

Thank you I am so tired of AI stuff

I was part of the problem. I posted a reply proudly announcing its AI source. I had forgotten rule 1 and was very excited over OpenAI's GPT-3 implementation. I really just wanted to share the excitement of how good the response from an can be.

While i'd still love to share that excitement, i didn't realize that is was common to have AI here. I absolutely do not want the sub to have a significant number of replies from AIs. That's not what the sub is for,

AI here too? I can't imagine what kind of history can write a robot

Edited

Can I pls have links to some AI generated response-permitting subs?

Edit: you said there are many but I can't find a good one. I've never posted anything here, but I just came here looking for writing prompts to feed my AI. if anyone happens to know some, I'm sure lots of the AI posters will happily migrate there.

You got downvoted for suggesting moving people using ai to another place. People on this sub are funny

Is it okay if a prompt is AI generated? (we would think it is but just asking)

No. Rule 3 still exists.

I think there are concerns about how AI generates its content too. From what I understand, it sources from other writing on the Internet. So it may be partially coming from something someone else wrote without giving them credit.

Someone more knowledgeable on the subject can probably explain it better 😀

Creativity is for humans. Bots don't have creativity. Bots have programming.

Stealing somebody else's writing in order to 'train' bots to write shitty stories just makes it worse.
