Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism to be Presented to Eligible DoD IG Employees
March 12, 2009 –Department of Defense Office of Inspector General employees who are eligible to receive the Secretary of Defense Medal for the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) will be recognized at the 20th Annual Inspector General Honorary Awards Ceremony to be held later this year.
The Secretary of Defense GWOT Medal was created to recognize and honor the contributions of the DoD civilian workforce in direct support of military members engaged in operations to combat terrorism.
The criteria for the medal is aligned as closely as possible with that of the GWOT Expeditionary Medal awarded to U.S. military members. (more)

Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs Holds Hearing on Training and Equipping Afghan Security Forces
February 12, 2009 –Department of Defense Principal Deputy Inspector General Thomas F. Gimble today testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs on the “DoD IG Assessment of Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives Control and Accountability; Security Assistance; and Sustainment for the Afghan National Security Forces.”
Also testifying at the hearing were Mr. Charles Michael Johnson, Director of International Affairs and Trade, U.S. Government Accountability Office, and Mr. Mark Schneider, Senior Vice President, International Crisis Group.
Principal Deputy Inspector General Testifies Before the Commission on Wartime Contracting
February 2, 2009 –Department of Defense Principal Deputy Inspector General Thomas F. Gimble today testified before the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan on “Lessons From the Inspectors General: Improving Wartime Contracting.”
Mr. Gimble testified at the afternoon session of the hearing, along with U.S. Agency for International Development Inspector General Donald A. Gambatesa and Acting Department of State Inspector General Harold W. Geisel. The hearing was held in the Senate Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building.

Department of Justice Announces Record Settlement in Pharmaceutical Case
January 15, 2009 – The United States Justice Department today announced that Pharmaceutical Company Eli Lilly will pay a record $1.415 billion in criminal and civil penalties resulting from the "off-label" marketing of the drug Zyprexa and associated improper charges to federal and state healthcare programs, including TRICARE.
The civil settlement and filing of criminal charges are the result of a five year investigation conducted jointly by the Defense Criminal Investigative Service Resident Agencies in Indianapolis, IN, and Philadelphia, PA; the DoJ Civil Division; the DoJ Office of Consumer Litigation; the Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations; and the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services.
The settlement is the largest amount paid by a single defendant in the history of DoJ.The announcement was made at a press conference in Philadelphia. To see a copy of the DoJ press release, click here.
