Camp Sovereignty supporters today gathered in King’s Domain in Melbourne to celebrate the anniversary of the successful 60 day occupation held there in 2006. A fire ceremony was held prompting a visit from Police and Fire authorities. After friendly negotiations, it was agreed the fire could stay there until 8pm in line with the agreement between MFB and Aboriginal People about the use of and respect towards sacred fire. (more…)

No doubt you would have heard in the news by now that there was a bit of stress at Camp Sovereignty last night. After a beautiful long night of celebration and recollection, all of the supporters gathered around the fire to put it out in the proper way. The authorities weren't happy with that and barged through the crowd to put it out themselves, in complete disrespect to the Fire and all those around it.

One hundred and fifty people this evening joined together at Kings Domain in Melbourne to celebrate the conclusion of one of the most successful demonstrations of Aboriginal Sovereignty in the history of resistance against the illegal occupation of Australia. Camp Sovereignty successfully reclaimed the traditional meeting grounds of the Kulin Nation people for 60 days and brought the worlds attention to the Unfinished Business of Australia; the issues of Genocide, Sovereignty and Treaty.

It now seems most likely that Camp Sovereignty have reached an agreement with members of the Melbourne City Council in regard to the fire at Kings Domain. In spite of State Government and media efforts to threaten, bully and provoke dissent, a course of action that aims to further the concerns of Camp Sovereignty activists is likely to be agreed.

Well we're amused, but quite sure the Government won't be!
It seems Camp Sovereignty has made it into the official State Government history books. Wonder if the Commonwealth Games PR office knows about it…
- 2006 – Sunday, March 12
- Aborigines from around Australia light a Sacred Flame at 11am and establish Camp Sovereignty at the Kings Domain Gardens in Melbourne, three days before the Commonwealth Games. The group known as Black GST (Genocide to end; Sovereignty acknowledged; Treaty to be made) attempt to highlight the 'Stolenwealth games'.

One of the awesome things about hanging out at Camp Sovereignty is the amount of learning or re-learning going on. For many people it's even a first experience with indigenous culture. After all, Camp Sovereignty is the only place in central Melbourne where you can go and experience grass roots Aboriginal culture in action. Something you'd think the Council would be keen to embrace, considering it isn't really costing them anything!
