I've been a long time reader, but not poster. For the last two years I've been working on a 2000 watt to 4000 watt solar system for my Model Y -- Today I can charge anywhere in the world!
I can reliably get 20 miles to 60 miles per day. I can expand these solar panels with ease, and contract them when I want to start driving.
I've also decided to put all the 3D printed parts required to build this online at -- if you want me to build you one, or if you want to get the free 3D parts and the blueprints for this build enter your email in the green box on the link.
The reason I can pack so many solar panels is because I am using telescoping carbon fiber tubes as my mechanism of expansion and contraction, as opposed to mechanical sliders. This allows me to pack 4000 watts of solar on a Tesla, without going over the max roof weight capacity of 165 lbs.
Overall it has been a fun project so far and I am designing Beta2. Beta1 is 11 inches high and is made out of wood. Beta2 will be fully made of carbon fiber and will be 6 inches high. Right now I researching the DC-to-DC charging and hot wiring.
Thank you all for your inspiration by sharing and discussing all things Tesla, and of course ask me anything in the comments and I'll reply shortly.

r/Rivian is the largest and most active fan-run auto-enthusiast Rivian community. We discuss the electric vehicle company, Rivian Automotive, along with their products and brand (not the stock). In 2022, Rivian produced 24,337 EVs and delivered 20,332 — up from 1,015 in 2021. In Q3'23, Rivian produced 16,304 vehicles and plans to produce 54k (previously 52k) by end of year across the R1T, R1S, and Amazon EDV.
I went from daily driving a Model Y to an R1T.
Obviously the R1T is a bigger vehicle but here are my impressions. It has been about 2.5 months.
What is better than the Tesla?
-
Better overall viewing / user interface experience with the full center screen dedicated to cameras / menus.
-
Tesla should have never removed the display in front of the steering wheel. When I get in my model 3 or Y the camera view looks tiny and almost unusable to me now.
-
-
Better parking / visibility.
-
The 360 degree camera is a game changer. I was in my model 3 last night parking next to a curb and was like...I'm blind...why can't I see anything?! It's very easy to park a Rivian and not worry about hitting anything.
-
-
Better visibility / assistance in parking lots
-
Similar to the previous statement but having the incoming person / vehicle warning while backing up is an added safety bonus. Having the rear camera above the bed is nice as well as it's never dirty / obstructed where sometimes the bumper camera is. Does anyone know if the R1S has two rear cameras?
-
-
The driving experience overall is great and it's hard to directly compare it to a 3 or Y as it's a much larger vehicle. It will be interesting to see the smaller R2 version and how it compares.
What Could improve the Rivian?
-
Max Pack leaves much to be desired. You basically only get a usable 10 KwH for $10,000. That's about 3x what the alleged range extender will provide for the CT if that ever comes to fruition.
-
It would be nice if the Max Pack was truly 180kwh as they originally announced which would math out to be about 527 miles of "rated range" and I'd be willing to pay about $350-$400 for each additional KwH above 131. So roughly 17-18k more for that.
-
-
Software is still a bit buggy.
-
I recently had an issue where the outside temp was reading a wacky # over 100 degrees and wouldn't engage the heat inside the vehicle unless it was on defrost or HI and no resets fixed this. It ultimately just fixed itself overnight.
-
There's also a feature in Driver+ that doesn't work where you can enable or disable the camera view switching to front view when changing gears. This feature happens automatically despite if it's turned off in Driver+ and is mildly annoying as I doubt anyone drives with the front camera on and really is only used for parking close to an object.
-
-
Software updates to further customize the riding experience.
-
Ambient Lighting Customization (Tesla doesn't even have this)
-
Selecting which camera to view while driving (Tesla doesn't have this)
-
Overall I'm very happy with the R1T and look forward to see what kind of options Rivian offers in the near future. A Quad Enduro Motor variant with a 175kwh+ pack would be nice to see in the R1S or R1T. I really hope they continue to offer decent range / expand upon the current range offered.

I normally only lurk around these Tesla forums and am a recent but atypical owner of a Tesla myself which I won’t get into. Let’s just say I’m learning.
The most frequent posts tend to be about cool modifications, battery sustainability, customer service horror stories and mostly praise for these vehicles (barring the obvious). Within these topics, I see so many people post about how they trade in their models for the latest ones every 2-3 years. My questions are:
Is there anyone out there going the distance with these cars? Beyond the 8 year warranty? Supposedly the battery can last up to 35 years and of course degradation by then might not let you leave your driveway.
Is there a near future where battery replacement for these things doesn’t cost $20k?
Anyway, best car i’ve ever driven but wondering if i’m foolish for holding on to it as long as a Toyota Camry because I may not be able to afford another one in the future.
Thanks for taking the time to reply and Happy New Year.

I ordered model y long range. I love road tripping and during my christmas trip to New Jersey, I had to stop to fill up gas(before I bought MYLR). Since it was holiday, there were so many cars at the gas station, I had to line up to fill up the gas. It took me 20 minutes to fill up the gas. I looked at Supercharger and saw many teslas were waiting to get charged and that was the only moment I thought Tesla is uncool. I’m curious if you guys worry like me what will happen if Tesla opens supercharger to other manufacturing brands.
1.Have you guys had similar experience? Wait someone to leave to charge yours? It will be nightmare since it will be slower charging and you will need to wait 20-30 minutes to get yours charged or longer
2. Do Tesla navigation shows how many people are charging at specific Supercharger station or how many spots are currently open at specific Supercharger station?

Hello,
So I am going to buy the 2024 tesla model 3, however I am really stuck on which variant to choose (long range or standard). The long range seems like the best option but the battery cannot be charged to 100% on a daily basis and doing the math on the est range vs standard. It only works out to be roughly 35 miles extra when taking into account a 90% max charge. Also the speed is about 1.6 sec faster am not really a car person but I do like fast cars lol. If I buy the standard version would i really be missing out on a whole experience (the 7k price increase for those small changes seems kinda crazy).
