There's been a huge investment and involvement of Saudi Arabia in world sports. They've signed world-class retirement-age football(soccer) stars like Ronaldo to perform in their Saudi pro league even reportedly offering over $700m for PSG's Kylian Mbappe(which is laughably high for a footballer). And they've been buying up some clubs in some European football leagues.

They have a deal with wrestling's WWE and they've already hosted an F1 Grand Prix.

They also hosted the Ngannou Vs Fury boxing fight(which for some weird reason had a LOT of celebrities present) and are apparently planning to host an Ngannou vs Anthony Joshua fight soon. They've got a potential bid to host the 2034 Men's FIFA World Cup and are investing heavily in Golf. There are probably other sports and sports-related events they've invested in that I'm not aware of.

Saudi Arabia barely has any well-known homegrown athletes so they end up importing world-class athletes from other countries and leagues rather than building theirs up. It's like they're trying to establish a sports culture in their country out of thin air.

Is there any reason or benefit to this? Is there some kind of economic or cultural plan behind this or is this just a symptom of having too much money?

Basics aside (e.g. pitching, hitting, etc.), what are some noticeable features that appear in baseball that other sports don’t have?

A few off the top of my head:

• The defense controls the ball. In (almost?) every other sport, the offense controls the ball.

• Although there’s no dress code at all for them, managers and coaches wear the same uniforms as players.

• Ejections are seen as either no big deal or rites of passage. In other sports, being ejected is considered disgraceful.

• Being successful 3/10 times on offense can be enough to be considered stellar. Try having only 30% success rate in other sports and see how far it leads.

This has been one of the weirdest things about transitioning. I can't say I'm not surprised? But men will just completely ignore me if the topic of sports comes up and I offer any insight whatsoever. I used to play football, (Which I was quite good at, actually) I'm a huge fan of NFL and NBA news, and it's like their eyes glaze over as soon as I say something sports related.

I can't help but laugh. They really think my brain is just filled with pink bubble gum and thoughts of cute boys and house chores I guess. On one hand, it makes me sad how sexist our society is but on the other, I guess it's affirming?

Anyone else experienced this? Don't even get me started on topics of history, or world news, or art either. I'm too ditzy to know anything about those also, apparently!

Something finally snapped in me yesterday (in a good way). I’ve been appalled at the price of beer at professional sports games for years, but I’ve always justified getting one or two cans because of the experience. However, I feel like the price has gone up at least $0.50 at every game I’ve been to in the last 4 years. Yesterday at an NHL game, a Stella Artois with tax was $17.81. The ticket to the game was only $50! That is insane!

My wife got one, but I finally had to draw a line for myself and didn’t get anything to drink (or eat for that matter, as a chicken finger basket was $15). Although I would have liked a snack, I think I got more personal enjoyment out of denying the arena a sale. Unless something changes, I think I’ve had my last beer at a sports game.
