The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a poem by Oscar Wilde, written in exile either in Berneval-le-Grand or in Dieppe, France, after his release from Reading Gaol (pronounced "redding jail") on 19 May 1897. Wilde had been incarcerated in Reading after being convicted of homosexual offences in 1895 and sentenced to two years' hard labour in prison.
During his imprisonment, on Tuesday, 7 July 1896, a hanging took place. Charles Thomas Wooldridge had been a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards. He was convicted of cutting the throat of his wife, Laura Ellen, earlier that year at Clewer, near Windsor. He was aged 30 when executed.
Wilde spent mid-1897 with Robert Ross in Berneval-le-Grand, where he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol. The poem narrates the execution of Wooldridge; it moves from an objective story-telling to symbolic identification with the prisoners as a whole. No attempt is made to assess the justice of the laws which convicted them, but rather the poem highlights the brutalisation of the punishment that all convicts share. Wilde juxtaposes the executed man and himself with the line "Yet each man kills the thing he loves". Wilde too was separated from his wife and sons. He adopted the proletarian ballad form, and suggested it be published in Reynold's Magazine, "because it circulates widely among the criminal classes — to which I now belong — for once I will be read by my peers — a new experience for me".
Twilight is the second album by Filipino band Hale, released under EMI Philippines on September 30, 2006. It contains four singles, which are the widely-nominated "Waltz", "Hide and Seek", "Shooting Star" and "The Ballad Of". It was certified Gold (15, 000 copies sold) on October 2006 simultaneous to the release of "Waltz" and just a week before its release.
The album consists of musical arrangements of a wider spectrum and very much reflects the band's massive success thanks to their certified Triple Platinum self-titled debut album, Hale.
HM Prison Reading, formerly known as Reading Gaol, is a former prison located in Reading, Berkshire, England. The prison was operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service until its closure at the end of 2013. It is a Grade II-listed building.
HM Prison Reading was built in 1844 as the Berkshire County Gaol in the heart of Reading, Berkshire on the site of the former county prison, alongside the site of Reading Abbey and beside the River Kennet.
Designed by George Gilbert Scott it was based on London's New Model Prison at Pentonville with a cruciform shape, and is a good example of early Victorian prison architecture. The Pentonville Prison design of 1842 was based on the design of Eastern State Penitentiary of 1829 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
It was designed to carry out what was the very latest penal technique of the time, known as the separate system. As a county gaol, its forecourt served as the site for public executions, the first one in 1845 before a crowd of 10,000; after 1868 executions took place inside, the last one in 1913.
Jesus was born in 1979
The kind of guy has something nice
He found out he'd like to kiss some girls
That's when Devil got in his world
Devil was 29 years old
When she found this pretty boy
Things went colloured inside her world
'cos Jesus was all she was looking for
Jesus promised to go to Devils's place
He never thought he was going out of his way
24 years old, pretty young faced though
He was really near to finally fall in love
She set the table up waiting for him
She's never thought good on bad was a sin
She'd promise him a weding ring
But suddenly the phone has started to sing
"hello there, this is from the Police
I'm sorry but we have some bad news"
That's when Devil started to cry
From that moment on she hoped she dies
Jesus got lost on his way to Devil's home
He was trying to find out what was going wrong
His car went out of control
He crashed agaist a wall
