It's all one great big joke, the MVP, DPOY, all of it. The only thing that should matter to us as real fans are regular counting stats, the eye test and record. How many games played? Ppg, rpg, apg, bpg. Do you win close games? Do you get blown out? Do you blow teams out? How is your supporting cast? What's your team record?
I know why secretly, other than the racial aspect, people think Jokic and advanced stats fuckery should win the MVP: because they're fucking lazy. God forbid you watch other teams. It's much easier for these lazy fucks on The Ringer, ESPN, TNT and whoever has a vote to just look at advanced stats, watch a game or two and declare a winner.
Bill Simmons doesn't have an outsized influence because he's brilliant or revered; he has it because he's loud (within the basketball zeitgeist) and because other voters cannot be fucking bothered to watch regular season basketball, so the loudest voice wins.
I think why people care is because these made up awards are what people use to solidify HOF careers. There was a thread on r/nba a couple seasons ago asking if Gobert is a HOF because he is 3x DPOY, and most people said yes! But, people would Joel isnt because “he’s never won anything”. If you asked 100 NBA executives who they would rather have 100/100 would take Embiid over Gobert, yet people think Gobert is HOF because he’s won DPOY multiple times

I enjoyed it. Unlike others, I enjoyed the audiobook, and thought he did really well. I agree that the ending was underwhelming, but thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the book and have recommended it to others
