The Residents – Not Available (Remastered Short and Full Versions, Bonus Edition + PRE -served CD’s)

Er, Happy Christmas to the weirdos who like this !

Released in 1978 from a recording from 1974 that was not going to released.

Here they introduce synthesisers into the wide musical palette, creating a warm, but sad experimental album. A warped psychedelic Opera for people on substances. Reminds me of Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” but it is far more than that.

The short version for the purists. Released on CD in September 1997.

“X Is For Xtra” seems like a re-imagining of the original album. Re-recorded with more modern techniques. Not too bad for a bit of uneasy listening,

Beloved – Blissed Out (Vinyl LP)

The band have been a big part of the blog over the years so I can’t think why this was not even on here.

One of the first remix albums released to accompany the 1990 LP “Happiness” and shows how well connected the band was with the Club Dj’s / Producers.

Danny Rampling opens preceding’s Paul Robb (Information Society) and Bill Coleman take on “Wake Up Soon” Tony Humphries puts his take on “The Sun Rising”

Chilled synth pop with a bit of laidback rave (?) on “Pablo” and the final track is a bit of an aural symphony.

Well it is something anyway.

Nearly their final release from 1996 and some Deep Dubs. Salt City Orchestra providing the Robotdisco Dub and their own Coco Dub having the most vocal snippets.

The Beloved – Ease The Pressure (12″)

Had this ripped ages ago and wondered why it wasn’t on here.

From July 1996 and some more pounding beats with a Trance feel. The backing vocals make the track, Danny Madden and The Voices Of Love.

Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka remix the long opening track and really pulls out a blinding , Deep House Mix.

The Beloved – Sweet Harmony + Re-ups (2 x US Promo 12″)

BELOVED DAY!!!

It’s the 90’s and the time of a hundred remixes!

A loved up tune from the peace and love days of the UK dance scene

There are 10 (ten) on this US Gatefold twelve of their 1992 Hit. They loved a remix and did most of themselves as Adam and Eve.

All the mixes are here but we must not forget the saxophone from Nigel Hichcock that makes the track. On the album version you can even here lute from John Themis (from Oz band Grace Under Pressure) and extra keyboards from Richard Cottle.

Peace Bisquit (Bill Coleman) helps get the tempo up on B1 and D1. Good to see my favourites Consolidated do a couple of mixes, grungy Hip Hop beats and I like the bleepy dub, me smells a Jack Dangers at work!

The “Sweetheart Club Mix” is the pick with a mixture of light and dark but needs more vocal motif’s.

Jon and Helena Marsh seemed to have been off the scene for ages, probably enjoying what the message was on here.

Re-ups below. There seems to be a lot of missing rips so expect some additional posts this week.

Kirsty MacColl – My Affair + Re-up (12″)

From 1991 and remembering the tragic loss of Kirsty MacColl who died yesterday 23 years ago.

This was produced by then husband Steve Lillywhite and was from the album “Electric Landlady”

A jaunty Latino track co-written by Fairground Attractions, Mark E Nevin. This got remixes by Howard Grey (Apollo 440) with some extra keyboards by brother Trevor (A1 and B2) Also Chad Jackson completed a mix with his famous layered beats (B1)

B2 is where to go to make the most of the song. The witty lyrics and the real brass section. Lounge-tastic

Ajax – Ex-Junkie (US 12″)

NYC and originally on WAX ! TRAX ! this came out in ’94 / ’95. Love poetic rap lyrics from Arleen L. Mitchel.

Ajax comprised of Mitchel, Joe Hornoff (producer), Michael Roy (guitar) and Michael Hornburg (drums and keyboards and from The Usual Suspects) Additional musicians – Bass Guitar – Mark Sidgwick, Organ – Mark Schaffel and Percussion – Tao Gutierrez.

The style ? Jazzy Big Beat with those insightful lyrics. The pick of the remix is the quite guitar-ey Ex- Tension mix with some fine organ. That A cappella might be useful!!

Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force – Planet Rock ’98 + Link (Spanish 12″)

A raft of mixes of this came out in ’98 and here is just a few. Of interest to me was the Original Re-edit – studio outtakes and completely different vibe with the space sound effects and definitely from the 80’s.

ORGAN (Oriol Crespo) toughens it up adding some hard beats and Progressive elements of Trance and Kaylab (Oliver Klitzing) keeps it quite retro with some analogue sounds

The last track is a funky House mix with guitars and brass samples.

Gun – The Only One / Word Up (12″)

Debut on here for Alt. Rockers, the Glaswegian band Gun and a release from 1996 . From Discogs ;

Gun formed in 1987 by brothers Giuliano (guitar) and Dante (bass) Gizzi, with Mark Rankin (vocals), Scott Shields (drums) and Baby Stafford (guitar). Signed in 1989 by A&M Records, they released their debut album “Taking on the World”.

Alex Dickson replaced Baby Stafford before the release of their second album “Gallus”. Both Alex and Scott left before the release of “Swagger”, Giuliano taking over all guitar duties and Mark Kerr (brother of Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr) replacing Scott.

“Swagger” was their most successful album, propelled by the success of their version of Cameo’s “Word Up”, which was a top 10 UK hit in the UK. The band took a break and returned three years later with yet another new drummer, Stuart Kerr (formerly of Texas), a new name (G.U.N.), and a new album “0141 632 6326”.

Had this in my Record Box for the rocky cover of “Word Up” and realised I’d never ripped it for the blog. Played “The Only One” for the very first time and Wow , what a track! A folky ballad with an harmonica solo it really works.

“Inside Out” is another one of their tracks segued into The Police’s “So Lonely” and works well if you a doing Rock Covers. “Word Up” is a solid , fun cover but avoid the Housed Up Tinman mix by Paul Dakeyne as it just doesn’t work.
