The Late Engagement Review

by Jack Rabid

On the first half of The Late Engagement, the Washington D.C.-area's Poole fails to improve on their mostly sparkling 1995 debut, Alaska Days. They've added a fifth member, and the resulting third guitar thickens the spry sound, makes it harder to pick out the fresh riffing underneath the now louder, rawer power pop, and makes Harry Evans' pleasant singing much harder to hear. Also, the production is cleaner but not warmer, making the early songs settle into an underground pop rut: not wild enough to be garage rock, not pretty enough for mood pop, and not spectral enough to be (fast) dream pop. However, Poole mitigates their worst tunes with a good attitude and a stack of humble harmonies. And beginning midway through the LP, these students of melody, who were sharp enough to cover XTC's "Earn Enough for Us" on their last B-side, finally win over the recalcitrant with a batch of tunes as tasty as just-baked cookies, and some deft moves. These moves are hinted at earlier in the LP on the sleighbell-laden "ba-ba-ba" Beach Boys tribute (a real page out of the XTC book). "La Chanson de la Voiture du Pompier," the nicely plucked title track lullaby, and the acoustic silent "Junior" loll nicely, sandwiching two early Velvet Crush-like, post-Big Star smack-pop gems, the sharp single "Sparkler" and "Modern Way." This engagement might be late indeed, but it's worth the delay.

Harkening back to the bright-eyed power-pop of '80s bands like Prefab Sprout and the Reivers, this burst of jangly goodness is loads of fun. Sure, tunes like the hummable title track won't change your worldview, but who needs that much tumult? Instead, kick back with the bubblegum soul of "Anyway" and the bright bounce of "Never Sad Again." It's like the Archies with an edge.

Alaska Days Review

by Norm Elrod

Despite it's chilly title, Poole's 1995 debut, Alaska Days, is filled with warm bursts of musical sunshine. Similar to other SpinART bands like Apples in Stereo, this D.C. area quartet offers up bright and bouncy tunes filled with jingly guitars and two- and three-part harmonies. Vocalists Harv, Harry Evans, and Jeff Booth ponder the lighter side of adolescence -- fast cars ("Car"), vague idol worship ("Loon"), and the odd high-school crush ("Strawberry Kool-Aid Smile") -- on this self-produced first effort, avoiding adulthood like the average teenager. The lyrics can be immature and adolescent ("Mary Shakes Her Hair"), but the melodies offer refined moments of pure pop genius (same song). Imagine either the most sugary bites of Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend without the overdubs and super slick production, or later Lemonheads albums without the punk rock aspirations, pinned down by a bounding bassline and a crisp backbeat. Poole can match melody and lyrical insight, and does so on occasion ("Oregon"). Unfortunately, they sometimes fail on both accounts, leaving the listener with a lazy, meandering mess ("Snowcicle"). Still, the hits far outnumber the misses, whereas on later albums, the opposite is often true. A few slow spots don't spoil the infectious fun of the happy-go-lucky Alaska Days. It could easily be the indie rock sing-along soundtrack for summer vacation, providing a nice substitute for those who now have to settle for two weeks.

TRAMPOLINE I Want One of Everybody 1996

by request

Review by

I Want One of Everybody is the second album release by Trampoline, a collection of D.C.-area talent featuring members of Chisel, Edsel, and Poole, as well as top-rank independent producers and the songwriting of mainman Pat Ferrise. While Dormer, the project's first release, concentrated on cleaned-up, radio-friendly pop, I Want One of Everybody makes a slight jump to cleaned-up, radio-friendly rock -- the record's sound is still far more mainstream than the work of many of the musicians involved (surpassing Dormer in terms of polish, focus, and pop organization), but there's something in its sense of hooks and construction that makes it an indie project even in its most pop moments. Trampoline is essentially a collection of indie-rockers making a highly organized and fairly mainstream pop record, and as one might expect, the results are frequently more intelligent and appealing than the work on top-forty radio.
