Ronnie Spector 1989 - Back To Back - #1: In the early 1960s, the Ronettes, with Ronnie Spector as lead singer, scored nukerous chart hits, including Be My Baby, Baby, I Love You, Walking In The rain and I Can Hear Music, just to name a few. The Ronettes also recorded 3 tracks for the album A Christmas Gift For You from Phil Spector - Frosty The Snoman, Sleigh Ride and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus> (Of Note - Darlene Love and The Crystals were also major contributors to the albim).  The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and was ranked #142 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 and 2012 lists of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. In 2019, Rolling Stone ranked it as the greatest Christmas album of all time. Ronnie's connection to that album continued to her death, as she often performed Christmas shows in New York clubs.  This excellent audience recording captures her doing exactly that at the early show at the Village Gate on December 22, 1989, 44 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back later today for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Los Lobos 2022 - Back To Back - #1: When it comes to music venues, New York City has more than you can count.  The metropolatain area boasts 3 stadiums, 4 arenas, medium sized venues such as the Beacon, The Capitol in Portchester and The Theatre at MSG, over 40 Broadway theaters and countless small clubs. With alll those options, its amazing how certain bands eventually pick a favorite they return to again and again. In the 1980s and 1990s, for example, The Band loved playing at the Lonestar Cafe.  The Grateful Dead made Madison Square Garden their home, playing runs as long as 9 shows, and setting a record, since broken, for the most concerts ever played at the World's Most Famous Arena.  The Allman Brothers annual residency at the Beacon is the stuff of legends.  Los Lobos seems to be following in that tradition, turning City Winery into their venue of choice whenever they visit NYC. This excellent audience recording captures them at City Winery just a year sgo today, on December 19, 2023.  Download this ioe, then come back tomorrow and the next day for posts 2 and 3 in this Back To Back set.

Stones 1981 - Back To Back - #1: Over the years here at So Many Roads, we've probably brought you close to a dozen shows from the Rolling Stones' 1981 tour. Soundboards from that tour abound as the band taped every show in anticipation of releasing a live album and a concert film. In fact, perhaps more than any previous tour in rock history to that point, the Stones’ 1981 venture was about maximizing profits. The Stone’s became the first band to have a corporate sponsor for a tour. Jovan paid the band $1 million to advertise on every ticket printed. In addition, this show, the next to last of the tour, from Hampton on December 18, 1981, 42 years ago today, was the first concert ever broadcast on pay per view. To borrow from Frank Zappa, the tour could have been subtitled “we’re only in it for the money”. This soundboard recording captures that Hampton show in its entirety and you don't have to pay a dime!  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.
