In both the Oxford and MSU tragedies, handguns were used. Michigan already has universal background checks for handguns. I’m Not sure how one would think that expanding background checks would have any kind of meaningful impact. The logic just isn’t there.
Safe storage laws, I’m interested in how they would be enforced. I do like codified liability if somebody gains unauthorized access and commits a crime. I’m not sure how any other enforcement mechanism could exist and not violate the 4th Amendment.
Red flag laws, at least at face value, throw due process out the window. I’m not ok with that.
I read an article the other day about Omaha, NE and some programs that have been put in place, largely focusing on community outreach, that seem to be a lot more effective and positive than any of these ideas.
