Yep the camera people don’t say anything to you regarding directions. They have a map tracking all the locations/other teams, so they definitely do know if you are going the wrong way.

The only time I’ve heard of them telling a team during our season was when all teams had already hit the mat and filming needed to wrap up for the day.

Australian version of the show:

Most of the camera crew from our season were in good shape, but there weren’t many gym junkies or people who would be running in their spare time if that makes sense. We definitely had crews we would prefer working with due to their speed, but they rotate your crew to keep it fair.

A lot of the times you also have to stop running for them to catch up and get the shots, so they aren’t always actually keeping up with teams.

They do an incredible job carrying that heavy gear though and making sure shots are stabilised. They are just as tired as a lot of the teams at the end of the day!

What do they do during downtime for entertainment?

It was a shit show. A few teams got covid at different points during the race, and had to isolate for different periods depending on the countries rules.

We were removed from the race and allowed to return once we tested negative. However, the issue was that teams had to continue racing while we had covid, meaning we essentially had immunity. This was pretty poorly handled from a viewer perspective and fans of the show were rightly mad about it.

Whilst I don’t feel it was fair for those teams, I also don’t feel like it would’ve been fair to eliminate us, so it’s a sticky situation. I total I believe 6 teams had it at various points of the race.

Basically had to sit in a hotel room for 10 days while the rest of production went ahead and continued filming. Was an awful time and so so boring. We also didn’t even know if we were coming back into the race so the whole time we just sat there waiting to test negative with no idea of what happens after that.

Definitely not allowed any cameras or any phones! Our bags get fully searched the day before we start the race and our phones/wallets get taken off us.

Some of the crew took a few random photos for us and sent them after the race. Really cool to have some bts shots of the experience.

Speaking from the Australian version of the show.

We weren’t allowed any electronic devices, but could bring books (had to carry it in your bag though). On flights we would just watch the in flight entertainment or sleep.

Depending on the schedule, you rarely get many days of doing nothing. If we did have a day off we had to stay in our rooms and were let out from small periods with handlers. For the first few days they tried to keep everyone from talking off camera, but eventually stopped caring so we could all hang out in the hotel lobby or by the pool if we had one.

You were honestly exhausted after most legs and would just want to lay in bed anyway and do nothing. If it was a nice hotel we would have a tv with some English channels we could watch.

Typically though if a leg finished in the arvo, would spend a fair amount of time waiting for our turn for confessionals, then the confessional process took like an hour, then you’d have dinner (sometimes buffet, sometimes room service) and then go to bed.

How does appearing on survivor affect one’s career?

KellyandGeorgia
commented

Not survivor related but we were on The Amazing Race Australia. A few people on our cast planned to capitalise on the 15 mins of fame but got a bit of a reality check. It’s very hard to gain a following to the point that you can monetise it after an Aussie reality show.

We occasionally got recognised in public while the show was airing, and have maybe been recognised 5-6 times since the show finished airing. Honestly you very quickly realise that no one gives a shit and the world moves on very quickly. It’s a strange feeling because you just went through such an intense experience and then once filming wraps up you’re straight back into your same old life. Some people from our cast were back at work like 1/2 days after returning back from the show.

Every single person in our cast went back to their normal job/career. We personally had to quit our jobs to go on the show due to the filming schedule. I’m sure survivor is very similar and that most contestants just go back to regular life. Some may use it as a chance to change up their life a bit and do something else after. In terms of a career it really wouldn’t negatively affect anything unless you did something terrible or were portrayed in a bad way. Think MAFS is more the type of show that would ruin your career.

Applying to the Amazing Race

KellyandGeorgia

We were on the Australian version!

My advice is you need to have an instantly recognisable gimmick. How would the pair of you be described in two words? (For example we were ‘newlywed teachers’)

You need to be authentic and yourself, but you also need to pick particular parts of yourself to display that match your team dynamic. Bring a lot of energy to the casting rounds, but also don’t overthink it! They can smell BS from a mile away.

How would you practice before going on TAR?

KellyandGeorgia
commented

We had 2 days notice we were going on the show but we basically sat in the hotel during prep week watching old season and trying to spot trends in detour choices and which tended to be faster. We also practiced navigation simulations and did some physical prep.

Honestly though pretty much everything goes out the window once you actually race. Would definitely recommend practicing running with a backpack on!

Money Surplus

KellyandGeorgia

We had to give it back to production after each leg. But some teams started keeping money to buy snacks during transit 😂 after the Caye Caulker leg a few people had left over money and were buying cocktails at the pit stop, was such a fun afternoon

You also have to remember that teams are being filmed 24/7 and you only get shown glimpses. We are often running on no sleep, starving, tired, away from family/friends, no contact with the outside world and the pressure of racing for a life changing amount of money. No one can predict how they will act on the race and you’d be shocked at how different people are off camera compared to racing moments. Everyone gets stressed, argues etc. but everyone also laughs, has fun, has incredible moments that often don’t make it to air.

I think the reddit community is pretty good at recognising this, twitter on the other hand is the worst.

I feel like our season almost had to many tasks that were easy or quick to complete. I think it would be more entertaining for the viewers if the tasks were a bit more in depth or required more effort/attempts. A lot of the tasks we would be done in 5-10 minutes. Especially having so many teams you barely got to see everyone completing the task or what went in to completing a task.

Sorry my explanation was probably bad, I will physically be there on the tour with the guests as the tour manager.

Very good feedback though I appreciate all the things you listed, definitely a lot to think about!

Want to start a group tour company in the Philippines

Yeah definitely not looking to set up a corp or anything!

Only thing I worry about is constant entry/exit from the country and customs. Technically I would be working in the country so that’s what I’m unsure about!
