Labor facing internal demands to call for full ceasefire in Gaza
The Albanese government is coming under significant and increasing pressure from within to take a stronger line on a full ceasefire in Gaza.
About 40 Labor party branches in New South Wales have now passed motions demanding a full ceasefire.
“The fact that so many across a wide geographic spread have passed quickly in just over a month, including in the prime minister’s own branch, shows there’s a depth of feeling among the Labor rank and file about this issue,” said a party insider.
At least 14,800 Palestinians, including thousands of children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israel began its bombardment and ground operation of the besieged territory, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Alarming footage shows Israel left premature babies to die alone in Gaza hospital it forcefully evacuated
Premature babies were left to die in an intensive care unit (ICU) in one of Gaza’s hospitals after medical staff were forced to evacuate by the Israeli forces, according to a chilling video report by Al-Mashhad TV.
The disturbing footage was recorded in the aftermath of Israel’s siege on the Al-Nasr Children’s Hospital in western Gaza, as the pause in the fighting brought to the forefront the scale of Israel’s destruction in the strip.
A correspondent for Al-Mashhad TV entered the hospital this week and discovered the bodies of five babies laid out on separate beds in the paediatric hospital’s ICU.
In the footage, the equipment to support the babies can be seen attached to their beds, with the video edited to blur out the bodies of the babies which were described as “decomposing”.
Jailed without charge: How Israel holds thousands of Palestinian prisoners
Of the 300 Palestinian women and children whom Israel has identified for potential release as part of the humanitarian pause between Israel and Hamas, nearly 80 percent were not even formally charged.
An overwhelming majority of Palestinian prisoners were arrested under a quasi-judicial process known as administrative detention, under which Palestinians are initially jailed for six months. Their detentions can then be repeatedly extended for an indefinite period without charge or trial.
Most Palestinians, including children, if tried, are tried in military courts and handed lengthy sentences in what critics call sham trials because in many cases Palestinians are deprived of defence lawyers and due process. In comparison, Israeli citizens are tried in civil courts, highlighting the two-tier justice system that discriminates against Palestinians.
