Deeply upsetting footage out of Tahiti. A barge planned to use for building a controversial judging tower for the Paris 2024 Olympic surfing competition destroyed coral during the highest tide of the day.
The barge got stuck multiple times on the reef, with no load on it AND during high tide.
Keep in mind this destruction happened on an empty barge with zero construction —which means there will be catastrophic reef destruction if we don’t speak up and protest RIGHT NOW. Please comment on the @olympics and @tony_estanguet’s instagram (president of @paris2024) and tell them this unnecessary reef destruction is completely unacceptable.
Local surfer Tahurai Henry, comments on the incident:
“This judge’s tower project will completely destroy a large part of the lagoon in the face of the most beautiful wave in the world! A construction worth over 500 million francs for 3-4 days of competition that won’t be reused for our local surfers!”

Horrifying headlines from @cop28uaeofficial in Dubai over the weekend as Sultan Al Jaber is reported saying that the phase out of coal, oil, and gas would take the world �back into caves.’
This comes days after UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres shared the importance of phasing out, not just phasing down fossil fuels:
“The science is clear: The 1.5C limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels. Not reduce, not abate. Phase out, with a clear timeframe.”
