Welcome to Yokai.com, the online database of Japanese folklore.

This is an illustrated encyclopedia featuring ghosts, monsters, and legendary figures from Japan. All of the entries on this site are based on Japanese sources including books, paintings, scrolls, prints, and oral tradition. Some have never appeared in English before, while others will be very familiar to fans of Japanese culture.

Yokai.com is presented ad-free and is supported solely by readers via this Patreon project. Online Shop

Yokai.com has an online shop where you can find yokai postcards, books, and collector’s editions of our yokai books. Hardcovers & collector’s editions are extremely limited, and once they are sold out they will not be produced again until the next printing. Paperbacks and ebooks are available from Amazon or from your local bookseller.

Please note that shipping is limited to countries and shipping methods currently allowed by Japan Post. We currently offer shipping via Japan Post Small Packet (up to 2 kg) and EMS (over 2 kg) for international parcels. More shipping options will be added as they become available.
