Multifaith Peace Picnic 2023 in Palo Alto CA
Multifaith peace picnic was held on September 11, 2023 to commemorate the tragic event. The event was held outside the Palo Alto City Council.
The Multifaith Peace Picnic was sponsored by American Muslim Voice Foundation, CA State Senator Dave Cortese and Multifaith Voices for Peace and Justice . Senator Cortese sent a certification of appreciation to the American Muslim Voice.
Omar Naeem Raza was MC of the program attended by a large crowd.
The program began with the recitation of Holy Quran by Hala Farooqui. Mustafa Farooqui translated the Quranic verses.
Lydia Kou, Mayor of Palo Alto, welcomed the audience. Several City Council members were also present.
Farha Andrabi, Co-Founder and President MVPA Musalla, offered the Muslimprayer. Christian prayer was offered by Rev. Burke Owens, Senior Pastor at the First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto. Chaim Koritzinsky, Rabbi of Congregation Etz Chayim offered the Jewish prayer.
Rev. Dr. Diana Gibson, from Multifaith Voices for Peace & Justice, read a message from the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.
Rev. Ray Montgomery, Executive Director of PACT (People Acting in Community Together) spoked about MLK Jr’s Dream of Building a Beloved Community.
Z (known as ZayanDa), Burmese recording artist amused the audience by singing “Imagine All the People” of John Lennon .
Samina Sundas, Founder of the American Muslim Voice Foundation , in her speech explained why we are striving to replace the culture of despair, division, & violence with a culture of hope inclusion & peace.
Khalil Abdullah thrilled the audience with his guitar performance: Tala’a Al-Badru’ Alayna.
Elijah Leppert, from Stanford, played ‘Kindle the Fire of Love’ selected from Baha’i writings.
Chris Iyer, anti-death penalty advocate and member of First Presbyterian Church of Palo Alto, played “Peace” by Horace Silver.
Bella Gertsch, Sophomore at Palo Alto High School, performed “Amazing Grace.”
Eric Sabelman, Quaker, gave closing remarks.
The program ended with a candlelight vigil.
