Regulation
The Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) has two regulatory roles, as set out in law:
- We operate a licensing scheme to regulate the spectator viewer accommodation at Premier, Championship and Football League grounds, as well as Wembley and the Principality Stadium (as set out in Part 1 of the Football Spectators Act 1989 (1989 Act).
- We keep under review how local authorities discharge their functions under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975 (1975 Act) at those grounds.
The Sports Grounds Safety Authority Act 2011 makes provision for the SGSA to offer advice and guidance in respect of spectator safety at any sports ground irrespective of the sport and at venues outside England and Wales. However, our regulatory role does not apply to those venues.
