Cinematic holy grails

Don't get me started on Chabrol.

I had to hunt old dvd when I wanted to watch some of his best works with Stéphane Audran...

It's sad really. I would like a nice boxset of his best works between 1968-1974 : Les Biches, The Unfaithful Wife, This Man Must Die, Le Boucher, Just Before Nightfall and Wedding in blood...

Donc je me demandais...

Je ne m'attends pas à grand chose compte tenu des années de diffusion, mais je tente tout de même ma chance.

Merci en avance.

Which movie gave you the most immersive cinematic experience?

Dpoulau
commented

Recently, it's Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974).

It's a long movie but I was engrossed from the beginning. I want to be their friend and live in their world.

This movie is really special.

Director Bouncebacks

Dpoulau

Well, Chabrol is similar in some ways.

When he first started, he was a promising "French new wave" director but, in the 60s, he struggled a bit and did some very poor movies (some French comedies, some Euro spy, some bad suspenses, etc).

However, in 1968, he "found" his style (and a new producer) and did Les Biches and that was the start of his most prolific period (between 1968 and 1974) where he made Le Boucher, Wedding in Blood, Just before nightfall or The Unfaithful Wife...

Last update : My thoughts on Made in U.S.A (1966)
Discussion

To recap, Saturday I asked about Made in U.S.A (1966) in that post : https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/s/er9JXHA54m.

It was basically a post where I asked how was Made in U.S.A. and if it was worth watching even though I'm not a Godard fan.

(I saw Anna Karina in another movie and wanted to watch more movies with her)

Well, as you can see in this post : https://www.reddit.com/r/criterion/s/QQt4V5azYR, I decided to buy it.

I (finally) watched it.

Here's my thoughts...

It was great. Honestly, it's now my favorite movies from Godard.

I really liked the aesthetic and, for once, I actually enjoyed Anna Karina's character.

(I added her character to my list of favorite female characters)

Plus, the scene where Marianne Faithfull sings As Tears go By is really beautiful and melancholic in all the right ways.

(I am a very melancholic/nostalgic person at heart.)

The plot is kind of silly but it's wanted this way so it's okay. It's part of the charm I guess.

It feels like one of those paranoia/conspiracy thrillers from the 70s (actually one of my favorite genres to watch).

In short, I'm glad I bought it. I find it fascinating so I totally see myself rewatching it. It's like Alphaville (1965) (my second favorite from Godard).

(I saw Alphaville (1965) on Kanopy but I'm thinking of buying it eventually)

It's the kind of movies you find/learn new things every time you watch it. It only gets better and better.

I think it's worth having those kind of movies in your collection.

Anyway, thanks to all of you who followed this "saga". And thanks to those who wrote me their thoughts, analyses and others feelings about those Godard's films.

I appreciate it.

I watched it on Kanopy.

I was lucky I recorded Band of Outsiders when it was playing a few months ago. It plays regularly on a channel where I live.

I saw most of my Godard movies last year (besides the ones I saw this year) so I don't plan to rewatch them soon.

The only exception is Pierrot le Fou. I saw it very young so I plan to rewatch it really soon (I have an old DVD).

But I'm always open.

I really like Mireille Darc so I'm very curious to see Weekend (1967).

I saw Celine and Julie go boating (1974) and I'm not sure I'm the same person now

Just wait for the right day/moment.

Since learning Marie-France Pisier was in it, I had a renewed interest for the movie (I'm not saying I wouldn't have watched it but I would have waited a bit more) and it was in my head for a while.

Yesterday, I had time and it was raining so I took a chance and I had fun watching it.

It was actually raining yesterday where I lived and that's also mostly why I decided to watch it.

It's the perfect movie for that kind of temperature.

I also put a movie to fall asleep and I have the feeling it's also a great movie for that.

True.

The beginning can be long.

I watched it (mainly) for Marie-France Pisier and, after the credits, I was scared she was only in one scene (since "avec le concours de" basically means "with the special participation of").

But, especially after the first hour, it gets really interesting.

Nah. It won't make any difference.

Hopefully, it will still be a pleasant ride for you.

Plus, like I said to someone else, there's Marie-France Pisier in it. She's not playing Celine nor Julie but she still goes boating.

It wasn't my first Rivette (I saw Secret Defense (1998) in January) but it was my first from that period. I will see his other films for sure.

Like, I wasn't able to rate Celine and Julie go boating on Letterboxd (I simply gave it a ♡) because I think it's not the kind of movie you can really rate (there's too much happening) as much as it is a movie you just feel.

Same. I was puzzled by the beginning but, then, we started to see more of Bulle Ogier and Marie-France Pisier and I was hooked.

Question about Made in U.S.A (1966) by Godard

Nope. Not even in my library.

And I checked Ebay, it's not worth buying a used either.

So, I'll just buy it and we'll see if I like it. It looks promising and I was told it was more like Pierrot le fou than Contempt.

Question about Made in U.S.A (1966) by Godard

I can't stream it anywhere where I live. I can only buy it.

Now, renting a movie 6$ it's one thing. Paying 40$ for it another...
