Cab Calloway "Planet Jazz" 1998 - mono

American band-leader of the 1930s-1940s, jazz musician, singer, song-writer & multi-talented EmCee renowned for his 'scat singing' style...
...Calloway's orchestra rotated as a 'house band' with that of Duke Ellington at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem through the Prohibition era. His snappy 'zoot-suit' dress sense and skillful vaudeville song-and-dance routines made him an extremely popular entertainer. His 'moonwalking' predating that of Michael Jackson by about a half-century.
In later years he continued performing and featured in films, such as "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965) with Steve McQueen & Edward G. Robinson. The "Cab Calloway School of the Arts", in Wilmington, Delaware, was dedicated in his name in 1994. Calloway died shortly after a stroke and his ashes are interred at Ferncliffe Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. - discogs

The Gitanes "Cloudy Draw - The Further Adventures of The Vietnam Veterans" 2006

The Gitanes or The Further adventures of Vietnam Veterans gonna play legendary shows in France! The Kaiser and Mark Embatta are still full of psychedelic punk'n'roll and are ready for to Rock. Their single "Bang, Bang" show us their very original Sonny Bono & Cher cover (made after by Nancy Sinatra). Their new album "Cloudy Draw" is one event! The Gitanes, music for the ones who likes the Seeds, Love, 13th Floor Elevators...
Do you remeber... The Vietnam Veterans?
This was and still is the best psychedelic music! And now this, "The Gitanes"(the further adventures of the Vietnam Veterans). Thanks a lot to Mark, Lucas and all the other members, who are still supporting us with music after all this time. I know you'll hear and feel that they never betrayed the only style and mood they are able to play...;-)
Jean-Luc Manet

Al Perry & The Cattle "Cattle Crossing" 1985

Debut LP by Al Perry & The Cattle.
Back in the old days they called it 'cowpunk', among other things. Genre definitions and interpretations get weird. At any rate, this Tucson native has played his form of kinda punky tunes with a twang since the 80's. Complete with a good (and dirty) sense of humor. Enjoy this debut full length from 1985. But you might not want to go camping with him. - from: uinsitforeveryone.blogspot.de/2017/05/al-perry-and-cattle-cattle-crossing.html

Roger McGuinn "Back From Rio" 1991

After spending the better part of the 1980s as a solo acoustic troubadour, Byrds cofounder Roger McGuinn landed a contract for a solo album with Arista Records at the turn of the 1990s...
...Featuring Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and ex-Byrds David Crosby and Chris Hillman, the resultant album had a strangely modern feel, although it was primarily driven by McGuinn's trademark Rickenbacker 12-string. Songwriting had never been McGuinn's strong suit, and on this album he wisely chose some excellent material by Jules Shear and Tom Petty, who provided the album's unexpected hit, "King of the Hill." - Review by Matthew Greenwald

The Clash "The Singles" 2007

Producing box sets of CD replicas of original 7" singles is a bit tricky: as 2006 sets by Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson prove, it's all too easy to sacrifice either completeness or historical accuracy for the sake of a set that's easy to package and sell...
...Elvis and Jacko both are cursed with extraordinarily large catalogs, however; even when they're limited by number one singles, as they are on Elvis' set, or by singles that were accompanied by videos, as they are on Jackson's Visionary, there are still notable omissions, and that's not even taking into account that Jackson's set was missing original B-sides. Why all this talk about Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson in a Clash review? Because box sets containing nothing but CD replicas of original singles are such a curious, collector-driven breed that only mega superstar acts like Elvis and Jackson have them in their discographies, and there needs to be some kind of yardstick to measure the Clash's CD singles set by. Because this set -- appropriately and simply called The Singles -- succeeds where most other sets of this nature fail: it is historically accurate and complete, containing replicas of all the Clash's singles, including B-sides from both 7" and 12" singles, all added to the appropriate singles. It not only has all the commercially released singles, but also the legendary Capitol Radio EP, which was given away with the NME in 1977. It is lavishly and intelligently produced, from its re-creations of the original artwork (including labels) to its booklet, containing testimonials from famous Clash fans including Mike D, Shane MacGowan, John Squire, Nick Hornby, Carl Barat, Tim Burgess, Steve Jones, Damon Albarn, Ian Brown, Danny Boyle, Bobby Gillespie, Bernard Sumner, and Pete Townshend. This all makes for an enticing package, ideal for nostalgists who either lived through the Clash's reign as the only band that mattered or those who wish they did, but this also serves a purpose for collectors since it contains a handful of songs that never appeared on CD before, including the This Is Radio Clash and This Is England EPs and several mixes of "The Magnificent Seven." These rarities are, of course, primarily of interest to Clash collectors, but that's who this set is for and that's who this set will satisfy. Not every Clash fan will need this -- after all, as fun as it is to listen to all the original singles in a row, it's a bit of a chore to work through a 19-disc set of CDs that range from two tracks to seven tracks -- but those who want to take this nostalgia trip will find The Singles hard to resist. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

He also scored seven Westerns for Sergio Corbucci, Duccio Tessari's Ringo duology and Sergio Sollima's The Big Gundown and Face to Face. Morricone worked extensively for other film genres with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Mauro Bolognini, Giuliano Montaldo, Roland Joffé, Roman Polanski, Henri Verneuil, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. ...Morricone's best-known compositions include "The Ecstasy of Gold", "Se telefonando", "Man with a Harmonica", "Here's to You", the UK No. 2 single "Chi Mai", "Gabriel's Oboe", and "E Più Ti Penso". In 1971, he received a "Targa d'Oro" for worldwide sales of 22 million, and by 2016 Morricone had sold more than 70 million records worldwide. In 2007, he received the Academy Honorary Award "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music". He was nominated for a further six Oscars, and in 2016, received his only competitive Academy Award for his score to Quentin Tarantino's film The Hateful Eight, at the time becoming the oldest person ever to win a competitive Oscar. His other achievements include three Grammy Awards, three Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, ten David di Donatello, eleven Nastro d'Argento, two European Film Awards, the Golden Lion Honorary Award, and the Polar Music Prize in 2010. Morricone influenced many artists from film scoring to other styles and genres, including Hans Zimmer, Danger Mouse, Dire Straits, Muse, Metallica, Fields of the Nephilim, and Radiohead. - wiki

Pezband "Laughing In The Dark" 1978

Laughing in the Dark marked something close the peak of Pezband's career as a recording act -- they were never able to match its energetic mix of strong hooks, short, punchy songs, and lots of attitude to go with their virtuosity...
...The 2005 CD reissue from Japan not only offers the best sounding edition of this album that you're ever likely to hear -- recalling that Passport Records' vinyl pressings were nothing to write home about -- but augments it with six bonus live tracks off of their live EP Thirty Seconds over Schaumburg. The opening Jeff Beck/Yardbirds homage, of "Blue Wind," "Stroll On," and "I'm Not Talking," slots in perfectly with the contents of the studio originals and is practically worth the price of admission by itself (as though the LP's side one trilogy of "Love Goes Underground," "I'm Leavin'," and "Stop! Wait a Minute" isn't....) - Review by Bruce Eder

DOGS "Legendary Lovers" 1983

"Pub rock influenced me in a way of keeping on making short songs with really fast tempos but that’s what we had been doing from the beginning. As an example, the song "Here Comes My Baby" on the Dogs’ second record was written in ‘73 and it’s a really short and fast one." (Dominique)
In July of 1983 the band recorded the Legendary Lovers lp, which was released later in the fall. This one is almost certainly their second best out of the whole catalog. It’s much more of an updated garage rock sort of sound without the punk overtones that marked their best record, Walking Shadows. Vic Maile produced the record and given his background with bands like Dr. Feelgood, the Vibrators, the Inmates, the Godfathers, and Eddie and the Hot Rods, he seemed like a more sympathetic choice than reformed AC/DC knob twiddler Tony Platt had been on the previous album. Legendary Lovers rolls from strength to strength, with the poppy "Little Johnny Jet" and "Everything But Love" leading off, the moodier "Never Come Back" following that, then the middle-eastern sounding "Secrets" (later to be the second single from the album), the ringing glam-rock guitar intro and power pop hooks of "I’m Just Losing That Girl", and the rocking "Can’t Find My Way". "Maureen" has a fifties rocker feel with some sax charts filling out the background – it was the choice for the single. Strangely enough, the flip of this 45 became the home for the lp’s title track, which was left off the album because the version recorded in the studio didn’t measure up to the standard they’d hoped for it. "Be My Lover" has some brilliantly original guitar bits that give it a haunting and memorable feeling. The album closes out with "I Got Somebody", another track that merges glam and garage in a way similar to "I’m Just Losing That Girl". In summary, Legendary Lovers is an outstanding album, and anyone who’s been enthralled by mid 80s Australian garage rock bands would find this to measure up to the best work out of that scene. It’s loaded with classic tunes and great playing. Others certainly thought so… in fact a very good Swedish guitar rock band liked it so much they named themselves for the album.

Roger McGuinn "Roger McGuinn" 1973

Roger McGuinn's 1973 self-titled solo debut was in most respects a breath of fresh air after the final days of the Byrds, in which the group was floundering in directionless mediocrity...
...In a sense, it's a back-to-basics album that emphasizes much of what McGuinn does so well: his forceful reedy vocals, his guitar playing, and his skills at both writing earnest folk-rock material (usually with future Bob Dylan collaborator Jacques Levy here) and interpreting unusual traditional and contemporary songs. Never was it folkier than on the acoustic "I'm So Restless," which benefited from harmonica by Dylan himself (about whom the song was partially about). All four of the other original Byrds play on "My New Woman," which is virtually a reunion of the original quintet, with the addition of saxophone by jazzman Charles Lloyd; David Crosby makes unobtrusive cameos on some other tracks. As likable as it is, however, the album isn't an unqualified triumph. Some of the songs aren't so hot, some of the Moog synthesizer (by McGuinn) is unnecessary, his vocals sometimes seem to have been recorded with too much brittleness, and none of this is as good as the best of the Byrds. Unexpected influences make themselves heard in the Beach Boys harmonies of "Draggin'" (with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys on piano and backup harmonies), the Vietnam blues of "Hanoi Hannah," and the gospel-rock of "Stone." - Review by Richie Unterberger

"The Mood Mosaic" Vol 2 Barnie's Grooves

Second volume in the great Mood Mosaic series, and even funkier than the first one!..
...The focus here is on funky stuff with a soundtracky feel, and the list includes some remakes – like Henry Mancini's "Streets of San Francisco" and Bobby Forrester's "Sanford & Son" – plus some groovy originals like Quincy Jones' "Call Me Mr. Tibbs". Also features Jimmy Smith's hard to find "Root Down", plus "Super Strut" by Port Authority, "Desert is a Circle" by Jodorowsky, and "Mission Impossible" by the 45 Sound Orchestra. Great stuff! © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The Phantom Four "Morgana" 2012

Morgana is the follow up to The Phantom Four's 2006 studio debut "Madhur". The album contains 13 tracks of which many by their fans will be recognised as live classics they have been playing for years.
Although usually described as an "instrumental surf band," this group from Amsterdam is what you might call a "groove band" with a distinct Middle Eastern intonation. Their music is insistent, loud, driving, and very, very repetitive. This is not necessarily a bad thing if you are into it. This album contains thirteen songs which to me seem much more similar than different. Amazon records the album on cd when you order it. Unfortunately, there is almost no information on the folded insert - not even a list of musicians, credit for the producer, or where the songs were recorded. There is nothing said about the tracks except their names and playing times. I'm can't say I'm sorry I have this album but I doubt if I will play it all the way through when I do listen. I'll just select two or three tracks more or less at random when I'm in the mood. - By Robert C. Rettke

Archie Shepp "Attica Blues" 1972

Refining his large-ensemble experiments of 1971, Attica Blues is one of Archie Shepp's most significant post-'60s statements, recorded just several months after authorities ended the Attica prison uprising by massacring 43 inmates and hostages…
...Perhaps because Shepp's musical interests were changing, Attica Blues isn't the all-out blast of rage one might expect; instead, it's a richly arranged album of mournful, quietly agonized blues and Ellingtonian swing, mixed with a couple of storming funk burners. Of course, Shepp doesn't quite play it straight, bringing his avant-garde sensibilities to both vintage big band and contemporary funk, with little regard for the boundaries separating them all. His soloing on tenor and soprano is typically sharp-edged and modal, and his nasal, slicing tone on soprano is featured quite heavily. The stylishness of the slow numbers is undercut with quivering, faintly unsettling dissonances, and the up-tempo funk cuts recall the way Sly Stone's arrangements ping-ponged many different elements off each other in a gleeful organized chaos. That's especially true on the gospel-inflected title song, a monster of a groove that later became a hit on the acid jazz revival circuit (and stands up to anything recorded by straight-up funk bands of the era). In the same vein, "Blues for Brother George Jackson" sounds like an edgier Isaac Hayes-style blaxploitation soundtrack cut. Vocal ballads are plentiful, and Joe Lee Wilson ("Steam," a song Shepp would return to often) and Carl Hall (aka Henry Hull) both acquit themselves well; more debatable are the poetic recitations and the choice of flügelhornist/composer Cal Massey's young daughter Waheeda to sing "Quiet Dawn" (although Waheeda's almost-there intonation is effectively creepy). Still, in the end, Attica Blues is one of Shepp's most successful large-group projects, because his skillful handling of so many different styles of black music produces such tremendously groovy results.

The Clash "Sandinista!" 1980

The Clash sounded like they could do anything on London Calling. For its triple-album follow-up, Sandinista!, they tried to do everything, adding dub, rap, gospel, and even children's choruses to the punk, reggae, R&B, and roots rock they already were playing...
...Instead of presenting a band with a far-reaching vision, like London Calling did, Sandinista! plays as a messy, confused jumble, which means that its numerous virtues are easy to ignore. Amid all the dub experiments, backward tracks, unfinished songs, and instrumentals, there are a number of classic Clash songs that rank among the band's best, including "Police on My Back," "The Call Up," "Somebody Got Murdered," "Charlie Don't Surf," "Hitsville U.K.," and "Lightning Strikes (Not Once but Twice)," yet it's difficult for anyone but the most dedicated listeners to find them. A few of the failed ideas were worth exploring, but even more -- like the children's choir version of "Career Opportunities" or the Tymon Dogg song "Lose This Skin" -- weren't even worth pursuing. As the cliché says, there's a great single album within these three records, and those songs make Sandinista! worthwhile. Nevertheless, its sloppy attack is disheartening after the tour de force of London Calling and the focused aggression of The Clash. - Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Graham Bond Organisation + Sonny Boy Williamson & The Animals "Rock Generation" 1962-1967 Vol 4

The Graham Bond Organisation (GBO) were a British jazz/rhythm and blues group of the early 1960s consisting of Graham Bond (vocals, keyboards, alto-saxophone), Jack Bruce (bass), Ginger Baker (drums), Dick Heckstall-Smith (tenor/soprano saxophone) and John McLaughlin (guitar)...
...They recorded several albums and further recordings were issued when the group's members achieved fame in progressive rock and jazz fusion. The spelling of the band's original name varied between releases, often depending on the intended audience. The British English spelled as "Organisation" or "ORGANisation" (Bond's original plan), while in some other countries outside the UK spelled "Organization". - wiki

The Isley Brothers "The Isley Brothers" 1976

American R&B/soul group from Cincinnati, Ohio, established in the early 1950's. O’Kelly Isley, Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley (died 1956 in automobile accident), comprised the original group...
...They released their early hit “Shout!,” in 1959. In 1963 they started own label T-Neck, and added a young Jimi Hendrix on lead guitar. In 1965 they signed on to Motown where they recorded “This Old Heart Of Mine." They left Motown in 1968 and re-launched the T-Neck label in 1969 when they released “It's Your Thing." In 1973 they added the younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley, as well as O’Kelly's brother-in-law Chris Jasper, to their regular lineup. During this era from 1973 to 1983 the group continued to release hits like “Between the Sheets," “Choosey Lover,” or “For the Love Of You." Inducted into Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 (Performer). - discogs

DOGS "Too Much Class for the Neighbourhood" 1982

With the arrival of Antoine and his guitar, Dogs evolves towards a very 60' s style, and influence of Byrds is apparently felt, but Rock is always there, and the fantastic ' to much class for the neighbourhood ' is proof. "Les Dogs" had the Class and the rock not roll in blood. This is a vinyl rip. - Magic Kaic's Music
Natives of the Normandy region, the Dogs recorded a series of indie singles in 1977 and 1978 before debuting on LP with Different in 1979. The lineup shrunk from a two-guitar quartet to a trio on 1980's Walking Shadows and 1981's Too Much Class for the Neighborhood, rising back to a quartet for 1983's Legendary Lovers. In 1985, the Dogs cut a live LP entitled Shout. - Steve Huey, All Music Guide
