3.0 out of 5 stars Plain Songs
Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020
n the Dark, Soft Earth: Poetry of Love, Nature, Spirituality, and Dreams by Frank Watson is a collection of his poetry. It is divided thematically into ten books. Book One: Within the Weeping Woods. Book Two: Between Time and Space. Ets. There is a full-color divider of a painting between books. Watson's poetry may be characterized as plain-spoken. Almost haiku-like in its simple evocation of nature, human feelings, etc. The poetry is without punctuations and without capitalization. All lines are in lower case to give it an appearance of plain simplicity. The language is spare. The imagery is not too richly metaphorical. Although there are line breaks, frequently the lines can be read as one continuous utterance. For example, "when finding a mate you start with finesse then steal a caress until you slip into a state of sweet undress." Or: "in this country made of trees the music sleeps between the leaves." Or: "in two thousand years they will find an oak fossil with the lovers' names." Not too difficult or profound. Perhaps, its great virtue is its accessibility.
