**Dime Seeder's Notes**
- 01: There is a big digipop at the very end of the track
- most tracks are not continuous. There is a fade out and in between the first three tracks.
- According to Peter Losins site, these tracks are also not in the correct order.
- Per Peter Losin , All Blues, My Funny Valentine, Joshua, and the Theme were also played on this night but are missing from this source.
- Nice sound, strong playing. A great piece of history. The "Seven Steps To Heaven" alone makes this recording worth a listen. This version is not seekable and is tracked differently that LL137. The sound quality is pretty much identical but LL137 has many drop outs and digi pops that aren't present or at least so prevalent on this version.

Many Thanks to the original source and everyone at Dime!!

It looks like this was bootlegged as Don Henley Houston Summer 1989 by The Beat Goes On (BGO-9201), a Netherlands label...Discogs lists the release as 1989 but as the first broadcast was in 1990, I suspect that date is off.

Before this show, Henley was on 85-22, 86-A, and 85-14 (in our archives) with a concert from the Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles.

Usually I give a short report about future rebroadcasts of the songs...but this time, we've got to discuss the The Great 1990 Superstar Concert Labeling Screw-Up, or as I call it, the "Henley-Doobie Discontinuity."

This show was repeated as CO 90-15... or 90-27... but only one of those is likely to be correct.
Starting with the Don Henley 90-15 show, the numbers on Westwood One's Cue sheets did not match up with the numbers on the disc labels.  The cue sheet was 12 digits higher than the disc number.

1990 was rolling along just fine for Westwood One...

Rod Stewart disc and cue 90-11
The Who disc and cue 90-12
Moody Blues disc and cue 90-13
Neil Young disc and cue 90-14

...and then...things went sideways for several months.  Starting with our pal, Don Henley's rebroadcast of these tracks, the disc number no longer matched the cue sheet number.  And it wasn't a one-time mistake, it was repeated for the next twelve shows:

Don Henley 90-15 (discs) / 90-27 (cue sheet)
Allman Brothers 90-16 (discs) / 90-28 (cue sheet)
Bruce Hornsby 90-17 (discs) / 90-29 (cue sheet)
Stevie Nicks 90-18 (discs) / 90-30 (cue sheet)
Guns and Roses 90-19 (discs) / 90-31 (cue sheet)
Guns and Roses 90-20 (discs) / 90-32 (cue sheet)
Steve Miller 90-21 (discs) 90-33 (cue sheet)
Tom Petty 90-22 (discs)/90-34 (cue sheet)
Eric Clapton 90-23 (discs)/ 90-35 (cue sheet)
Stevie Ray Vaughan 90-24 (discs) / 90-36 (cue sheet)
Little Feat 90-25 (discs) / 90-37 (cue sheet)
Elton John 90-26 (discs)/90-38 (cue sheet)
Doobie Brothers 90-27 (discs) / 90-39 (cue sheet)

By the end of the year things got back in sync.  I haven't found any shows that overlap with these numbers except for 90-32, which was a Jackson Browne/Eddie Money show that appears to have the discs and cue back in alignment...and conflicts with the number of the second of the Guns and Roses shows. It would makes sense that there must be more shows from 90-27 to 90-39 that overlap with duplicated numbers, but I have yet to find any.

But enough of WW1's screw-up, let's get back to the artist in question.  Henley's also got two songs on 90-10, a multi-artist compilation from Farm Aid.

It looks like there was a repeat of this show as 91-15 as I saw one on Ebay, but I'm suspicious of the listing because the original show was 90-15, and it seems odd that they'd repeat the show exactly a year later with an almost identical catalog number.

Three tracks (Driving With Your Eyes Closed, Dirty Laundry, The End of the Innocence) are repeated on 91-52, a "Best of 1991" show.

Three more tracks (Sunset Grill, New York Minute, and Desperado) turn up on 92-49, a "best of 1982-1992" compiliation with other artists, and again on 94-49, another "Best of" with the same three songs.
93-43 featured tracks from Foxboro Stadium, Boston Walden Woods Benefit, and 94-21 repeated those tracks a second time.

97-06 had Don on two songs from Farm Aid...and after that I haven't found any Henley tracks...even though Westwood One went on for another 15 years.

Otis Taylor - Live Monterey Jazz Festival 2007

Excellent WBGO FM Source @320

By his mid-teens, Taylor was already playing guitar and harmonica in his own groups, the Butterscotch Fire Department Blues Band and later the Otis Taylor Blues Band. He also formed the T&O Short Line with legendary Deep Purple singer/guitarist Tommy Bolin before retiring from the music business in 1977 to become a successful antiques dealer. Taylor returned to music in 1995 with albums reminiscent of John Lee Hooker's work, albeit with a more minimalist bent. But it wasn't until 2001, when Taylor started to play what he calls "trance blues," that people really took notice. The recording White African's haunting rhythms and dark lyrics revealed a bluesman unafraid to expose social wounds.

Al Foster (born January 18, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia) is a jazz drummer "... for what I wanted in a drummer, Al Foster had all of it."- Miles Davis. The master drummer has been a major innovator in the world of jazz for several decades. As a member of the Miles Davis band from 1972 to 1985, Foster's contribution to Davis' music is articulated by Davis himself in his 1989 autobiography, Miles: The Autobiography, where Davis describes the first time he heard Foster play live in 1972 at the Cellar Club on 95th Street in Manhattan: 'He [Foster] knocked me out because he had such a groove and he would just lay it right in there. That was the kind of thing I was looking for. AI could set it up for everybody else to play off and just keep the groove going forever." Its noteworthy that Foster played with Miles' large funk fusion group in the 70s, was one of the few people to have contact with Miles during his retirement, and was also part of his in the 80s. He was the only musician to play in Miles' band for both periods.

I originally embarked on the Mellenfest project in the summer of 2021 but ran into a roadblock when I tried to extract #99-36.  By mid 1999, Westwood One switched from factory pressed silver CDs to CD-Rs.  The dye layer on many CD-Rs is not stable and degrades over time.  The second disc of my copy of #99-36 will no longer extract files correctly.  I tried extracting it with three different drives, but it was unusable.  I bought a brand new up-to-date drive in the hopes that it might work but it made no difference.  So I was stuck.  This was July 2021...and it brought my Mellenfest project to a screeching halt.  I had to wait until February 2022 before a copy of 98-06 turned up on Ebay.   98-06 is the same show as 99-36...but with one additional track: Check It Out, which was dropped from the track list on 99-36.  So...things turned out for the best, and I could move ahead with the project.

With this show, we start running into "variations" in the songs.  Westwood One often repeated tracks on future shows, but edited tracks differently than on the original syndication.  On this show, we have "Small Town" with a spoken introduction, and "Love and Happiness" with an a capella vocal introduction.  Future rebroadcasts of these songs were shorter edits, leaving out or shortening the introduction.

Jack & Diane gets a rap break middle section that's an interesting contrast with the country fiddle.

Flac files of wavs.  Comes with 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet, certificate of performance, and CD discs.

31 Running The Roadblocks (Chris Hillman, Peter Knobler)
32 Ashes of Love (Jack Anglin, Jim Anglin, Johnnie Wright)
33 Live From Gilley's LG 88-15 Outro - Jim Duncan

This version digitized June 2022 from the vinyl LP.  Includes 300 dpi scan of the cue sheet and both disc labels.

The Desert Rose Band was former Byrd Chris Hillman's band from 1987 through 1993.  They put out five albums (and a greatest hits comp) between 1987 and 1993, and had a good run on the C&W charts with seven songs in the Top Ten (including two #1's)

This set, recorded at Gilley's in Padadena, Texas, includes live versions of four of those charting singles:
He's Back and I'm Blue C&W #1
One Step Forward C&W #2
Love Reunited C&W #6
Ashes of Love C&W #26

The band was touring in support of their second LP Running, but the set list was drawn mainly from their first album:

From the 1987 album The Desert Rose Band:
One Step Forward (Chris Hillman, Bill Wildes)
Love Reunited (Steve Hill, Chris Hillman)
He's Back And I'm Blue (Robert Anderson, Michael Woody)
Ashes of Love (Jack Anglin, Jim Anglin, Johnnie Wright)
One That Got Away (Chris Hillman, Peter Knobler)
Hard Times (Jon Brandford, Chris Hillman, Bill Wildes)

From the 1988 album Running:
For The Rich Man (Steve Hill, Chris Hillman)
Livin' In The House (Steve Hill, Chris Hillman)

One of the great things about these live radio broadcasts is discovering songs bands never released, and this one has five unreleased songs.

There are covers of Buck Owens classic "Under Your Spell Again" and James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes."

Two songs are from Chris Hillman's solo album from 1985, Desert Rose, which, in spite of its name is note a Desert Rose Band album.

Chris Hillman Desert Rose LP 1985:
Why You Been Gone So Long (Mickey Newbury)
Running The Roadblocks (Chris Hillman, Peter Knobler)

Finally, there's a song that didn't turn up until eight years later.  "Just Tell Me Darling" came out in 1996 on Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen's Bakersfield Bound CD.

The Desert Rose Band made four unique appearances on Westwood One shows. I've never seen a second syndication of the tracks.  Westwood One often repeated shows with a different set of commercials, but that does not appear to have happened with the Desert Rose Band.

Recorded at Gilley's:
Live From Gilley's 87-39
Live From Gilley's 88-15 (this set)

Recorded at the Ritz, New York City
Westwood One Presents 89-35 (in our archives)
Westwood One Presents 90-07

The last two look like they were bootlegged or grey marketed as Roses At The Ritz (Royal Sound Music – RSM 014 SQ (1994)   DISCOGS.com says "This album is made from segments from two concerts at the Ritz, New York in 1987 and 1989."  I don't have a copy of the bootleg.

I do have Gilley's #87-39, but Side 2 is so badly scratched that I can't use it.  There are too many skips.
I've tried all the tricks I know but can't make it work.  So...I'm running a search on Ebay and hoping that
a clean copy will turn up.

On the commercials, we have actor Patrick O'Neal for Mineral Ice, and comic Bill Saluga as his character Raymond J. Johnson, Jr.  If his name doesn't jog your memory, maybe his catchphrase "You can call me Ray....or you can call me Jay, or you can call me...." will do so.

Some versions in circulation have a splice at ca. 4:15, at which point about 0:25 is missing.
Several of the indexes are incorrect on So What: Disc 1: For Dave (21:21); Turnaroundphrase (18:49); Tune in 5 (8:52); Prelude (10:30). Disc 2: Ife (22:01); Turnaroundphrase (16:23); For Dave (18:35); Calypso Frelimo (12:59).

In addition, the first 8:41 of Disc 1 repeats the end of "Calypso Frelimo" from Disc 2. Listen for the splice in Disc 2's "Calypso Frelimo" (at 4:15); the remainder of the tune is grafted onto the beginning of Disc 1's "For Dave."

Evidence for the date of this recording is confused. The Davis Septet was originally booked for two nights at the Shaboo Inn: January 24-25 (Thursday-Friday). The former owner of the Shaboo recalls that they didn't play on Thursday because Davis's hairdresser wasn't there -- which leaves January 25 (Friday) as the date. According to Dave Liebman, however, the music is from Saturday -- this is written on the tape Liebman made from the stage. Maybe the group stayed over Saturday night to make up for the missed show on Thursday -- although I haven't found any advertisements or reviews to corroborate this. It's also unclear whether all of this music is from the same night. The master (a single 120-minute tape) contains two extended but incomplete medleys. The second fragment begins on side A of the tape with the band warming up and ends about 9:00 into side B with the incomplete "Calypso Frelimo" listed above. The first fragment begins abruptly in the middle of "For Dave" and concludes with set-ending applause following "Prelude, part 2."
The presence of two versions of "For Dave" suggests that the music here is from more than one night, but this is speculation.
The Davis Septet had a busy road schedule during this period: Shaboo Inn, Willimantic (January 24-26); Massey Hall, Toronto (January 27); Arie Crown Theater, Chicago (February 1); Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis (February 5); Masonic Auditorium, Detroit (February 10); Keystone Korner, San Francisco (February 12-17); Club Etcetera, Washington (February 24-March 3); Carnegie Hall, New York (March 30); Chicago Auditorium (April 13). I'm sure there are many other dates here, but I'm still looking for ads and reviews.
A review of a Club Etcetera show begins by describing it as "one of the few local engagements [Davis] has not canceled," and goes on to capture nicely the Septet's performance: "His group is improvising, listening to each other, throwing phrases back and forth. They are not working under predefined changes or chord progressions. Neither are they being guided through the performance of a piece they have rehearsed to perfection with the score in front of them. Davis is giving direction to their improvisation, establishing a control that lessens the low points in communication.

Okay, gang, this one wraps up the Live From Electric Ladyland shows for now.  There's one more confirmed show - Jeff Healey - that I've never been able to track down.  It was one of the first three shows, before they began pressing them up on compact disc.  It's either on reel-to-reel, or cassette.

Unknown Digitization date.  You know the story already:   A kind-hearted soul was passing by and generously donated the raw wav files from the CD to us, and I got to work slicin' n' dicin' it up into individual tracks, fixing sector boundary errors, tagging the files with the composers names, etc. There were no associated scans of the CD or cue sheet. I edited and chaptered the files in May 2022.
