Firesign Theatre - In The Next World You're On Your Own (1975)

Firesign Theatre - In The Next World You're On Your Own (1975)
Studio recordings @128
{Out of Print}

In the fall of 1966, four guys from L.A. calling themselves Radio Free Oz broadcast a manic three-hour improvisation on KPFK. For most listeners, it was the funniest thing that had ever happened to them. The comedy of Radio Free Oz didn't flow like a river; it evolved like a living organism, spinning off random bits and pieces but always keeping its own bizarre, internal coherence. When the first of many albums the group recorded as The Firesign Theatre came out in 1968, new records were set for sustained stoned giggling worldwide. But even before smoking all that grass, it was almost impossible to describe their appeal.

Which is not to say they were without influences. Their freeform montage format drew heavily on pre-war radio drama and the emerging late-nite UHF spectrum. Their bits were built around ordinary things like RVs, game shows, channel surfing and fried chicken. And they were full of a kind of cock-eyed mock-patriotism that allowed them to take cheap shots on their favorite malignant superpower without really making any serious political statement. Hearing their lengthy streams of altered consciousness was like watching the Marx brothers do a James Joyce impression; in a lot of ways, they prepared the world for Monty Python. And their stuffed-shirt straight men were always really, really straight, which was doubly funny if you were high. And, back then, you were or

 maybe still are.

It's 1992, and you're in Berkeley.  This is what's on the local public broadcasting station!  The newspaper was wrong, it's a Quintet not a Quartet, and it's Kerwin not Korwin.   It beats listening to Sen. Moynihan discuss legislation over on KQED.....

Tom Petty - Paradise, Boston, MA July 16, 1978 Retro Rock show #82-9

I've digitized a Retro Rock rebroadcast of a 1978 Tom Petty live show.  It's well circulated in other versions, and up in streaming  audio at Wolfgang's Vault....but I've never seen the Retro Rock version out there, so...here it is.   I've got scans of the disc label, cue sheets, and a pdf file of a newspaper review of the show that I found online.

This concert is listed as having been originally broadcast by WBCN-FM in Boston.

A year later, the King Biscuit Flower Hour distributed a show with Tom Petty and Steve Forbert for syndicated broadcast on July 15, 1979, which may be part or all of the 1978 show.   The Petty KBFH segment is listed as from the Paradise in Boston.  I couldn't find a track list of the 1979 broadcast for comparison, so I can't confirm that the 1979 KBFH show was sourced from the 1978 Paradise show (although it's very likely.) The 1979 KBFH show was distributed on reel-to-reel tape, so copies are rare.

Retro Rock was a syndicated radio show distributed on vinyl LPs in the early 1980s by the Clayton Webster Corporation.  I've seen shows on EBAY with distribution dates between 1981 and 1984. The formats were rebroadcasts of live concerts, interviews or artist profiles with studio or live cuts, with national commercials.  The concerts were often several years old, hence the "retro" in the show's name.

Retro Rock syndicated the Tom Petty 1978 Paradise show for re-broadcast during the week of February 22, 1982.  The Retro Rock version has eleven out of the thirteen songs originally performed, and is missing "American Girl" and "Too Much Ain't Enough."

The Retro Rock cue sheet inexpicably lists the song "Anything That's Rock and Roll" as "Rock and Roll Spy" on the cue sheet.

Wolfgang's Vault has a version of the Tom Petty 1978 Paradise show posted in streaming audio with twelve tracks (it's missing "Strangered In The Night").

The "Breakdown!" bootleg on Italy's Great Dane Records was released in 1990, and has all thirteen tracks.  It sounds fine...if you have that, you probably don't need this.

There was also a vinyl bootleg in the 1970s on Excitable Recordworks 4510-1 titled "It's Only Rock and Roll" sourced from the 1978 Paradise show with eight tracks.

This Retro Rock version was digitized in June 2014 directly from the Retro Rock syndicated LP.  I cleaned the record and removed most of the clicks, pops, and surface noise in Audacity. As there's some tape hiss audible in the quieter portions, it's likely the show was made from a copy of the WBCN master tape, as opposed to cut directly from the master tape.  I've left in all of the original commercials, but tracked them so they can be removed.

BusBoys (a.k.a. "Bus Boys") / Agora, Cleveland BBC Rock Hour #209 Version A

The BusBoys first album “Minimum Wage Rock and Roll” was released by Arista in 1980. The album features a diverse variety of styles, with touches of bar-band and new wave, but mainly it was straight rock and roll. What you didn’t hear was contemporary R&B, which is what most listeners would have expected from a black American group.

They worked the contradictions of those expectations into some of the lyrics, usually with humor, as in “There Goes The Neighborhood” (“I ain’t movin’ out for no Carol and Bob, the inner city is too close to my job”). There’s a touch of a novelty act about some of the humor, but it also spoke to the challenge of being a black rock band.

This live show from 1981 runs through 10 out of the 11 songs from “Minimum Wage Rock And Roll.” Several songs that are unreleased, including a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar.”

The BusBoys are still in business and have a website where you can purchase the studio versions of these songs for download.

I’ve included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and a record label. I declicked it manually to preserve the sound as best as possible.

Here's the lowdown on this tape:  I got this cassette in the 1980s in a trade I did with a fan in Tokyo. It's highly likely that my copy is first generation from his master, but I don't have any notes confirming that...but it's a low generation tape with a small amount of hiss.  This version includes the Japanese announcer, but it's tracked so that you can skip it if you want to jump ahead to the music. As the announcer is talking over tuning and small talk by the band, I think it's worth preserving.

Beatnik Beatch / Berkeley Square, Berkeley, CA April 15, 1989 (Audience Tape)

Beatnik Beatch were a San Francisco based rock/pop band formed by bass player Chris Witt Kettner (formerly of Chrome Dinette) and singing drummer Andy Sturmer.  In 1986 they released the album At The Zulu Pool on local label Industrial Records, which impressed Atlantic Records enough to sign them.  Atlantic had them re-record about half the songs from At The Zulu Pool for their eponymous major label debut.

In 1988, Beatnik Beatch added keyboard player Roger Manning, who began writing songs with Sturmer.  As they were working on their third album, conflicts over the material led Beatnik Beatch to disband, with Sturmer and Manning leaving to form Jellyfish.

Jellyfish put out two successful power pop albums, both of which were just released in deluxe 2-cd editions on Omnivore Records in January 2015, loaded with bonus tracks.

Which brings us to the following audience tape.....

Beatnik Beatch
Berkeley Square, Berkeley, CA
April 15, 1989

https://mega.co.nz/#!3MZ11DaB!Xm3npsKsNAKn-Z7bwSBcqeIw5-fI3YmIcI3EH4Rpn7o

Digitized March 2015 from a master copy of an audience tape by "Bob the Mailman."

Flac files of wavs.

01.  Intro
02.  That Girl's A Man
03.  Welcome
04.  ?     (Minute By Minute?)
05.  Bye Bye Bye
06.  Beatnik Beatch
07.  Queen Of The USA
08.  ?     (Cry For Me?)
09.  Baby's Coming Back
10.  ?     (I Love You Even Though?)
11.  The Logical Song (...joking around with the audience...)
12.  Always Be My Girl
13.  Lonesome Town
14.  Maria
15.  You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC cover...)

First things first...where I found this tape:  ....my brother's friend Bob taped local shows.  Ten years ago, Bob gave my brother a box of his tapes which my brother stored in my mom's attic,  I thought it was all "mix tapes" but recently found some of Bob's audience tapes were in there, too.  I usually stick to radio broadcasts but Bob recorded some interesting local shows so I'll be digitizing them and posting them here.

So...as the debut Bob the Mailman recording, this is a great sounding tape, well balanced with very clear vocals. There's a minimum of audience noise (although there's a moment where some pal of Bob's leans over and says, "ARE YOU PAUSING IT?" and then announces his need to use the men's room).  But other than that...this is a great sounding show!

While this is a Beatnik Beatch concert, there's a LOT of songs that turned up later on Jellyfish albums.  "Baby's Coming Back" was a hit single from the 1990 album Spilt Milk, and "Bye Bye Bye" was on 1993's Bellybutton.   "Queen of the U.S.A.," "That Girl's A Man," and "Always Be My Girl" were on Fan Club, a 4-cd box set of rare Jellyfish tracks.

I couldn't identify three songs on this tape, which I've marked with question marks....if there's anyone out there in Our Beloved Audience who can positively name the songs, please leave a comment and I'll update the track listing (and thanks in advance).

For those of you that don't know, our friend Mitch got out of Colorado and found himself a job. Where you may ask? Teaching English in Nanjang, China of all freaking places...

Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A

Japan - Communist China

Your skin a white stained sensation
Clinical bodies won't do
And as we're pumping, pumping and resisting
Inserting love into you

Communist China
Take me to heaven
Somebody wrong
We'll throw glass in your face
Call it new propaganda
Still, we've been waiting for so long

I'll take you out in the moonlight
Oblique horizons won't do
The knife in your fist
Is breaking up the white walls
Here's penetration for you

Face-to-face confrontation
Personal problems for you
And conversation's getting far too vicious
Impersonation won't do

Japan - Visions of China

I'm walking young and strong
But just a little too thin
I may be happy but I haven't clue to this life in my mind

Stay with me
We could learn to fight
Like every good boy should
Cling to me
We are blacked out in visions of China
Tonight

I'm building heroes again
I never thought of before
I remember the fashion but don't have clue to your life in my mind

Stay with me
We could learn to fight
Like every good boy should
Cling to me
We are blacked out in visions of China
Tonight

We walk backwards say nothing
My visions of China
We're young and strong in this party
We're building our visions of China

We walk backwards say nothing
Visions of China
We're young and strong in this party
We're building our visions of China
We walk backwards say nothing
Our visions of China

We're young and strong in this party
We're building our visions of China

If - If

If - If (expanded)
Studio Recordings @320
{Out of Print}

IF was a seminal jazz-rock band formed in 1969 as Britain's answer to the pioneering US bands Blood, Sweat and Tears and Chicago. The main difference was that IF did not have a trumpet or trombone player and featured two saxes instead. Essentially a live band, true to its strong jazz influences IF was probably the only jazz-rock group, both then and now, to feature solos by all the band members, not just by the lead instruments.

Jawbox - Grippe 1991 {Out of Print}

Jawbox - Grippe -1991
Studio Recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

Washington, DC Jawbox were the first act to leave Ian McKaye’s run Dischord Records for a major label (Atlantic, in this case). A move to a major label turned into both a blessing and a curse for them – for one, they got a chance to present their music to an audience outside of punk/post-punk/indie circles, as well as full creative control over their work, but they were also burdened by incredible expectations and unable to decide on a direction after two albums recorded for Atlantic they finally broke up in the mid 90s. The band was formed by formed by J. Robbins (Government Issue) in the late 80s and initially also included drummer Adam Wade and bassist Kim Coletta. They recorded their debut – a 4 track EP in the spring of 1990 and released it on their own label Desoto. Later that year, the recorded their first full-length – “Grippe” – with engineer Eli Janney (Girls Against Boys) at an Inner Ear Studios. “Grippe” is seen by many as a valuable first step in the band’s history.

Paul Rodgers - Live From Electric Ladyland New York City April 29, 1993

Live From Electric Ladyland was a syndicated radio show distributed on CD by the Album Network in conjunction with New York City's WNEW-FM radio station. I've seen copies dated from 1990 to 1993, so it looks like it only lasted for about three years.  The copies I've seen on Ebay have never had preprinted cue sheets included....however....this Paul Rodgers show had a fax of the cue sheet with it.  It's possible that they faxed cue sheets rather than printed and mailed them with the compact disc.

Paul Rodgers was promoting his second solo "Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute To Muddy Waters."  That album featured modern reinterpretations of songs by Muddy Waters, with contributions from Brian May, Buddy Guy, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Neal Schon, Gary Moore, Brian Setzer, Richie Sambora, Slash, Steve Miller, Jason Bonham and Trevor Rabin.

On the album, Neil Schon soloed on "Born Under A Bad Sign" and the electric version of "Muddy Water Blues."  This show gives you a chance to hear more of the songs with Schon as the guitar player.

This version is sourced directly from the syndicated disc.  There is a small amount of compression added to the tracks that is present on the original disc. Flac files of wavs.  I've included a scan of the faxed cue sheet and the CD.

Elvis Costelo & The Attractions - Live Liverpool 1980

Contributed by wacocrimatty...

Horace Barlow Band - Live Mountford Hall
aka - Elvis Costelo & The Attractions
University of Liverpool
February 6, 1980
Liverpool, UK
Soundboard @224

Excerpt from George Gimarc’s Post Punk Diary:
February 6, 1980 - Elvis Costello and the Attractions are masquerading under a different name to play a surprise concert in Liverpool. They’re working out new material and didn’t want the pressure of an audience of reviewers. They were slotted in as the third act at the bottom of a bill featuring Rockpile (with Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe) and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Nobody really expected much from the “Horace Barlow Band” until they took the stage and the crowd caught on. Elvis played it straight onstage, even down to introducing the band under the fake name. At one point in the show he managed a not-too-subtle dig when introducing a new song called “The Impostor” and dedicating it to his “…great friends, The Jags.” Elvis would repeat the surprise performance the next night in Bradford.

- includes the first known performance of “King Horse”
- includes a rare performance of “Human Touch” (one of 10 known)
- somewhat rare performance of “5ive Gears In Reverse” (one of 15 known)… correction: as of 2012,
there are now 24 known performances of 5ive Gears In Reverse.

The Wallflowers were in San Francisco as one of the opening acts for Tom Petty's massive 20-date run at the Fillmore and did an excellent (but short) in-studio broadcast for KFOG-FM.  Sound quality is wonderful, I was using metal tapes and it's very clear.  It's my understanding that "Skinny Lips" is an unreleased track...does anyone know for sure if that's right?
