The Joy Formidable - Live New York 2010

The Joy Formidable - Mercury Lounge
New York, NY
May 1, 2010

Good to very good audience recording @320
(Needs Some Volume)

The Joy Formidable are a three-piece band from North Wales, currently located in London, England. Vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan and bassist Rhydian Dafydd originally played together as part of indie rock band Tricky Nixon, which later reformed into a New Wave/post-punk band Sidecar Kisses. They regrouped on returning to Mold, Wales and formed The Joy Formidable, with Justin Stahley now on drums, in 2007. Their music has been described as "primal epic grunge rock รก la The Breeders, Arcade Fire and Yeah Yeah Yeahs" and they were cited by The Guardian as "one to watch" in 2008.

Danny O'Keefe - "Ghosts of the Ascent"

I have the opportunity at last by living in Washington State to now meet Danny O'Keefe this weekend.  I have waited years for this; one of his songs about a man who never found success in life was playing the day my father died--and I was at that moment having an email chat with Danny.

This song is also about death, and perhaps one of the most profound ones I ever heard, considering how fragile Danny's voice can be, backed by just an acoustic guitar.  It is about the men and women who died trying to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, known as Jomolungma to the people of Tibet.

George Leigh Mallory is mentioned here; he vanished in 1924 in a climb with another man.  Mallory was making his final attempt to reach the top, and it was never known if he did.  His body was found in 1999, and it appeared that the fall he took did not kill him outright.  His body was so pale and preserved that it looked like alabaster marble.  New Zealander Rob Hall also lost his life from severe exposure and dehydration on Everest in 1996, and managed to call his pregnant wife via satellite to reassure her.
And then there was Marty Hoey.

Marty Hoey was a climber on the 1982 expedition to Mount Everest.
She often said she would not live to be 30.  It was her choice to pick one man each year when she climbed:  he was hers, and she shared his life and tent.  The other climbers who knew her wanted marriage, but she declined.  She was killed during the climb, when she plunged over the edge of the Great Couloir. The cause of her death was an unsecured harness.  She had leaned back, trying to get a better balance.  Following this, a new, more secure, knot was developed for climbing ropes and named the Marty Hoey knot in her honor.

Marty was the first woman mountain climbing guide to be hired at Mt. Rainier Mountaineering. Lou Whittaker at first was convinced that a woman could never have the strength and endurance required for the job. Marty had to take a job as cook for the climbers at 10,000-foot Camp Muir for a couple of years before being given the opportunity to prove herself.
I can only imagine the horror and shock that those men felt when they heard her scream and watched her body fall.

Danny O'Keefe's own thoughts and lyrics are in the attachment.
I interviewed Danny in my book Rock 'n' Blues Stew II.

Curtis Mayfield - Live and Studio Rarities

(original notes)

This is a wonderful collection of Curtis Mayfield rarities that was released as a bootleg entitled Keep On Keepin' On. I think the original version came into circulation on silver disc, not that long after Curtis passed away ( ten years, this coming December).
Since 2003 it has appeared predominately on a limited number of Soul, R&B, and Funk enthusiasts' web pages.

However Curtis Mayfield had a message that went way beyond just musical style or genre.
Part of the Wikipedia entry for him states:

'Curtis Mayfield is remembered for his introduction of social consciousness into R&B and for pioneering the funk style in the 1970s. Many of his recordings with the Impressions became anthems of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and his most famous album, Super Fly, is regarded as an all-time great that influenced many and truly invented a new style of modern black music'.

It is the case that his 'social consciousness' in the 1970's drew me to his music.

Radio Caroline played "We Got To Have Peace" on a good number of occasions, the presenters onboard the radio ship at the time, clearly supporting that aspiration, as they struggled to remain on air, for simply having the audacity to play music the limited number of 'other' UK radio stations chose to ignore.

Source: From the CD edition (Original Silver), ripped via WAV to MP3 in this case, the original material was either studio soundboard, or FM radio broadcast.

Sound Quality: Stereo (extremely good) @ 192kbps.

Track list:
Old Grey Whistle Test London England, January 1972:

01. Keep On Keepin' On
02. We Got To Have Peace (Omitted from this rip - see below)
03. Curtis on Discovery (interview)

04. Stone Junkie
05. Pusherman

In The Studio - 1972:

06. Freddie's Dead
07. Eddie, You Should Know Better
08. Curtis on Songwriting (interview)

The Push Expo - Chicago 1972:

09. We People Who Are Darker Than Blue
10. Give Me Your Love

The Midnight Special - Los Angeles CA, 1972:

13. Curtis on Superfly (interview)

The Midnight Special - Los Angeles CA, June 8, 1973:

16. Curtis on Politics (interview)

1st Annual Black Caucus Benefit, Washington DC, September 25, 1974:

17. Give Me Your Love
18. Curtis on Curtis (interview)

The original source for this specific copy of the boot, has deleted track two, as this was released on the 'Old Grey Whistle Test DVD Vol. 1' in 2001. That's fine as the whole thrust of this bootleg was the rarity of the material.

Sadly, Curtis Mayfield was badly injured and suffered many health problems for much of the last decade of his life.  His music for me however, fits comfortably in to the very limited and hard to gain entry "timeless' category."

Luck Brothers - Pain

Aside from "this is a sample of Philly {Philadelphia} soul," how else do I describe something from two guys (Art Austin and Tim Gleeson), aka Luck Brothers--when this is something that seems to have vanished in the mysteries of "artist{s} who never got a break"?

The Luck Brothers, a black/white duo who specialized in the small gigs around the City of Brotherly Love, caught my attention in '04 at the Tin Angel when they opened for Rory Block, the legendary blues award-winning lady who can play the old acoustic style so hard her fingers have bled onstage.

The release of Pain was one I endorsed to various outlets and magazines--and I kept up contact with Tim in an effort to try and get them better management as well as a more aggressive label.
With the help of a few friends, the Luck Brothers have left behind something that is fun, simple in its arrangements, and even a bit wistful.

Staying close with each other (Austin plays percussion and does lead vocals; Gleeson adds in guitar, keyboards, and backup vocals), along with a bassist and some b/g vocals too, this is sweet stuff that would have lit up any good party.  The title song brought a lot of laughter, especially from the women in the audience, as Art easily played up "pain in the...as I know it" as his way of complementing his lady.  "Boom Bottom" (one that our man DC should enjoy) makes it really clear which part of the female anatomy gets Art's attention--and I love the opening lick Tim hits on guitar.

But a two-part serenade on the classic "You Don't Know Me/Come Live With Me" puts a more sincere light on the two guys: Tim takes the first part in a cocktail bar-style vocal and jazz guitar/piano background, with Art chiming in.  They switch roles as Art takes over with his heart in his hand and one knee on the ground as he proposes to his sweetheart on the second half, and Tim adds in agreements.  Finally, the CD wraps up as "I Can Never Win" tells of rejected love and perhaps the fate of the Luck Brothers: they just could not "ever win," no matter how much we tried.  It was something we sure had put down for the odds in their favor.

Paul Orta & The Kingpins- I'll Kick Your Booty (1989)

Paul Orta & The Kingpins - I'll Kick Your Booty (1989)
Studio recordings - Out of Print

MP3 @256

Paul Orta (Vocal and Harmonica) was born in Port Arthur, Texas hometown of Janis Joplin, Guitar Junior and other prominent musicians. Paul was first influenced by the blues at the age of eight, when he saw Louis Armstrong on a movie. After nine years of playing with schoolband, Paul quit because the band never played Jazz or Blues. Within a half of a year Paul picked up the harmonica, and in three months he was in his first professional band. The name of the group was the Bayou Boogie Band, and they played and toured the Golden Triangle of Southeast Texas Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, and Louisiana for three years.

In 1979, Paul moved to Austin, Texas and he won the Kerrville Folk Festival harmonica contest in 1980. Later he formed the The Backdoormen with Port Arthur native Bill Arthur Jones, and with the help of bass player Eddie Stout they evolved into the Kingpins. Afterwards Paul entered the Antones University Of the Blues: playing with Blues greats Matt Guitar Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, Eddie Taylor, Sunnyland Slim, Wayne Benett, Robert Lockwood Jr, Luther Tucker, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Ted Harvey and many others, even being invited by Jimmy Rogers to play gigs and Snooky Pryor to join him on stage everytime he was at Antones. And every wednesday night for three months Paul played with Howlin Wolf s guitar player Hubert Sumlin.

Paul also toured and recorded with Texas Guitar Tornado U.P. Wilson (U.S.A. and Europe) for over two years. Paul has also recorded over a dozen albums and also can be heard on over three dozen different compilations and various artists, albums in North & South America, Europe, Japan and Australia. In addition he has performed with second generation bluesman like Kim Wilson, Derek O'Brian, and has recorded with Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton (Stevie Ray Vaughn rythm section) with Brazilian Blues/Rock guitar player Nuno Mindelis, even performing several festvals in front of thousand fans. Past members have included Uncle John Turner (Johnny Winter), Keith Ferguson (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Mike Kindred (Stevie Ray Vaughn), Wesley Starr (Delbert Mc Clinton, Willie Nelson), Freddie Walden (Anson Funderburg), Jimmy Carl Black (Franck Zappa).

Paul was nominated Texas Harmonica Tornado; by Buddy Magazine in 1987, played at the San Fransisco Battle of the Harmonicas and the Texas Harmonica Rumble. Hohner Harmonicas endorsed him in 1990, and in 1994, he helped Kendrick Amplifiers design a amplifier for harmonica called the Texas Crude. Paul also has designed his own special slide harp which allows one to play various positions on one harmonica.

This was the last post on a Sunday night before Google decided to nuke Floppy Boot Stomp. Let's hope the same thing doesn't happen here.

This was Paul Orta's very first release.

*NOT THE ACTUAL COVER, THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER JOBE'S 115th TALKING DREAM BLUES
One morning when I woke up had my morning cup. Put on my old floppy boots, they don't look too good, but their comfortable on my foots. Ran into the door, my head hit the floor. Turned my newspaper to page four. Well the paper said musicians seem to be under fed cause their last album only went platinum. Imagine that, in their limo they sat, as they cried all the way to the bank. So I figured I'd better get to the bottom of this, when I drove my car straight in a ditch. Good thing a stranger rescued me. Cause I sure did bleed, Stranger, thanks for the good deed. Can I call you when I'm in need? "Don't even give it a hitch" Just call me Mitch. Well I felt real bad for the great songsters. Decided I'd better put something in their coffers. So I went to my favorite record place when I saw they had a brand new face.Wasn't called Inasilentway any more was now called Adult Gif, X-rated stuff, a porno store. Those rock stars need some cheering up so I went and called em up. But I grabbed my bonger instead, and pour water down the side of my head. Sure did look like the phone, Rock-A-Day-Johnnie wasn't even at home. Mailed a letter to the heads of the labels, asked why do you tell so many fables. Blogs aren't killing rock and roll. The stuff you put out ain't got no soul. They wrote me back, said what the hell do you want for your fifteen bucks? now shut the hell up and don't be a fuck. Had me arrested, I protested, felt molested. Sitting here in my cell sure enough the ax did fell. My room number is eight one fity here in DetroitRockCity. My punishment just looms man, their watching me on their doomcam. There's another 36 verses but I'm gonna stop here and tell you about this show. Recorded in Winnipeg Canada on his current tour. Sound quality falls in the B range. Song titles are in the downloads. This shows runs almost 2 hours. That's why it's in 2 parts.

Grammy-winning Brazilian jazz artist Paulo Moura dies

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian jazz great and Latin Grammy winner Paulo Moura has died after a fight against cancer.

The 77-year-old clarinet player was famed for his versatility as well as his virtuosity and he ranged across Brazilian folk music, jazz and classical orchestral music.  He won a Latin Grammy in 2000 for the best Brazilian roots album and was nominated but did not win in 2004 for best Latin instrumental album.

In 1962, he played with Sergio Mendes' group at the historic Bossa Nova night at Carnegie Hall that helped launched the genre's mass appeal.  Moura was considered by many critics to be one of Brazil's greatest instrumentalists.

David Allan Coe - "Wreckless" and "The Ride"

David Allan Coe is one bad mutherforker. He likes to play the slots at casinos. He gets so into it, if someone disturbs him, he is likely to break their flockin’ face - or cuss them out at the least. Coe is the consummate outlaw, a country singer songwriter who has served serious prison time.

He's a decidedly non-racist cowpoke who is most famous for a pair of XXX-rated, racist underground records. Pity, since the serious singer-songwriter is far more than those controversial alcohol- induced sides. Coe is a complicated man. A man who has never really been embraced by country music’s Hall of Fame or Grand Ole Opry crowd. He’s an outsider, like his friends Bocephus (Hank Williams, Jr.), and Hank III, Billy Joe Shaver, and ol’ Bobby Richie (aka Kid Rock).

Coe is a moody, unpredictable cuss. Why, I seen him a year ago play for three hours and never play a single one of his hits. Instead, he covered “We’re an American Band,” and songs by Kid Rock, Pantera, and Marshall Tucker. But underneath the multi-color waist-length hair, dark glasses, tattoos and piercings, there beats the heart of a true entertainer, a superior country songwriter, and a good ol’ boy.

Tiger Woods gets a golf lesson--maybe

On more serious matters...Tiger Woods is not doing well on the golf course.  In fact...he's doing terrible.  There's only one way I can think to help him get over his slump--and that's to get three pros to show him how it's done.  In time, Tiger's putts (and maybe his putz) will be back in the swing of things!
And have a beer while you wait!!

Black Cat Bones - Live at the Marquee, London, 1968

Black Cat Bones
Live at the Marquee
London
1968

This is an audience recording, so have some patience with the sound quality.  The guitar, however, is very very good.
 Original notes and thanks!

Black Cat Bones was a British heavy blues rock group from London. The band formed in 1966 with original members Paul Tiller (vocals and harmonica), lead guitarist Paul Kossoff, brothers Derek Brooks (rhythm guitar) and Stu Brooks (bass), and drummer Terry Sims. The band is perhaps best known for having had Kossoff and Simon Kirke in its lineup. Kossoff and Kirke later joined Free  in 1968 and Kirke also became a founding member of Bad Company in 1974.
Black Cat Bones (named after a voodoo talisman associated with blues music) played regularly on the London pub circuit.

Early in the band's existence came several personnel changes, with Terry Sims being replaced by drummer Frank Perry. Perry would be replaced in early 1968 by drummer Simon Kirke.
Paul Tiller was later replaced by vocalist Brian Short.
On guitar here is Rod Price, who later appeared with Foghat.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Starland Ballroom, Sayreville, NJ, July 29, 2005

(Once you get past the lower sound as an audience recording, just turn up the volume and let the Family Band scream.  The Starland Ballroom is a tiny place; the walls must have been shaking.)

I saw Robert Randolph and the band on a hot night at the Stone Pony in July in New Jersey for a fantastic show:  they switched instruments so easily that it was incredible to see how easily they know each other's routines and riffs.
This is no way to treat a 13-string steel pedal--or maybe it is!!

Magic Slim - Born On A Bad Sign

Magic Slim - Born On A Bad Sign -1977
Live Studio Recording @320
Out of Print - Available used for around $99

Magic Slim is the greatest living proponent of the intense, electrified, Mississippi-to-Chicago blues style that spawned much of the music played by modern blues artists and rockers. This is Slim's very first release.

2. Born On A Bad Sign
3. Born In Missouri
4. Slim's Bump
5. Buddy Buddy Friend
6. Born Down The Bridge

Los Campesinos! - Black Session 2008

Los Campesinos! - Black Session
France Inter
Paris, France
March 3, 2008

FM Source @224

Los Campesinos! are a seven piece indie pop band from Cardiff, Wales that formed in early 2006 at Cardiff University and is part of the Cardiff music scene. Despite the band forming in Wales, none of its members are actually Welsh. They released their debut album, Hold on Now, Youngster..., in February 2008 and followed this up by releasing a record titled We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, in October that year. Whilst many consider it to be an album due to its length, the band have always referred to it as a 'record' or EEP (Extended EP) due to contractual and artistic reasons. Their second official album, entitled Romance Is Boring, was released on February 1, 2010.

Track List
01. Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats
02. Don't Tell Me to do the Math(s)

Joe Satriani - Montreux Jazz Festival, July 15, 1988 (5 videos/mp3)

Now hair this! Now hair this!!
The fireworks that STARTED at 8:00 p.m. ENDED at midnight (and it was a non-stop barrage: EVERYONE in a 20-mile radius AND in the neighborhood had an arsenal of bangers, blasters, boomers, screamers, and zingers).  So here's something to keep your head ringing (like mine) into Monday.  Five--yes, 5 videos of Joe Satriani--with hair--performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival.  On top of that bargain, you get five MP3 downloads as a separate some-sleep-that-I-ain't-getting option.
Snatch some Satch with hair 'cause it was there!!
(I predict Assissin is gonna think on that for a while.)
