20 days ago NASL announced it was closing it's doors. This came as a shock to (at the time) current employee Rotterdam and former employees MrBitter/Frodan/Gretorp. Did this happen suddenly? To them yes. To NASL owner(s)? Probably not.. I'd put it at 99.9999% this was several months in the making. That in and of itself is a story but I digress... one of the premier leagues in SC2 suddenly closed it's doors mid WCS season and did so with barely a word.

Why then do we still know nothing? Why is that ok? Why does it feel like such a monumental moment happened in SC2 history and yet we hear/read/know almost nothing at all.

To put this in perspective for people it's as if the most premier baseball league MLB just one day closed it's doors and all we got was "Man, we sure did have some good times! But, we are done now! KTHXBAI" Do we even for a second think this would get a couple threads and a few days of twitter buzz before disappearing completely? NO. This would be the epicenter of stories for months/years to come.. obviously everything about my example is bigger and larger but even if you scale it down we here in eSports experienced a strange moment in time. An entire league mysteriously closed it's doors and did so in a really shitty way and yet nobody seems to care that much.

This is where the state of our journalism steps in. I've been critical of Richard Lewis, Rod Breslau and Thorin so I accept that I am nowhere near the best person to be saying this AND I of course have my own fair share of mistakes / failures to live with but please address this: WHY is it ok for this to have gone on nearly a month and we have almost no information, coverage or story?

I made peace with Richard. I'm friends with Rod and I am pretty sure nobody (including Thorin) likes Thorin so I should be on equal level with everyone that can be there... but this strikes me as unacceptable. If NASL is not responding and is hiding info that should just drive the thirst for knowledge more forward. There are people that left the company, there are people that got shafted there are people that know things we don't. Not putting on my tinfoil hat here but I AM saying that it's a shame we don't see/hear more on this.

I fully expect a lot of the responses to either be:

  1. Story is in the works!

  2. Fuck you, you are bad at X, Y and Z. Oh and one time you did this thing so now you can't talk about stuff!

  3. Too hard.

  4. I NEED MONEY TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS

That said I think it only fair that if our journalists are going to be critical of those they cover we too should look at the journalism (who is watching the watchers and what not).

Read this as some tough love. Love em or hate em we have some dedicated gamers gone journalists and they DO DO great work from time to time. But this to me is such a glaring failure I can't help but ask WHY?

My hope is that this annoys/upsets and irritates those in question but then they "show me" and start kicking even more ass.

Thoorin does a fantastic job with his writing/interviews. Richard asks the hard questions and does it like a dick but man it's needed sometimes. Rod.. Rod has a really hot gf.

We can do better guys! Please dig deeper and start kicking even more ass.

Your sell-out corporate shill/conman,

Geoff "iNcontroL" Robinson
