Except p5r news is still a while away. That ponytail that was datamined does fit on a new character they teased for the game, but if she's a femc and in smash no way atlus would want that info out there before they've had a chance to reveal it themselves.

Not impossible that we could have a direct fairly soon with a Joker release for the 25th - that would give Atlus time to show off the Royal girl in full and then suddenly announce her for Smash at the end of the concert hours/minutes before he's set for launch.

Now how would that be for a 'last surprise'?

Given the recent releases of Smash Ultimate, a pattern of every 2 months seems to be the pace for DLC.

  • Base game dropped early December
  • Plant was added on the last day of January (might as well be February honestly)
  • Joker's coming in April (1-30 days from now)

So there's good odds the 2nd pass character will come in June.

Yeah, I agree that we’ll probably get Brave during or around E3. Even if Joker is released at the end of April, it will probably have less to do with dev time and more to do with the P5R reveal. On the bright side, the extra wait may mean that Brave will be far enough along to get some gameplay.

Eh, you also have to remember Plant was revealed in November and released in February. Joker was revealed in December, then released in April. We don't even have any news about the next fighter.

Fair point. I have to say, now that I think about it, Nintendo has one of the weirdest approaches for DLC releases in that there isn't really a pattern to predict from or follow, it's all over the place.

      It would be cool to get a big info dump all at once on a 25th direct, though--if it wasn't already datamined/leaked--I think presenting Joker as normal up until the day before his launch and then suddenly revealing Royal girl at the eleventh hour would be just as amazing.

        Unpopular opinion but the ponytail girl has nothing to do with Joker and won’t be in Smash.

        That datamine came from files that aren’t officially in game yet. What LIKELY could’ve happened and no one is talking about is that it very easily could’ve been from them using Robin’s model to create Joker’s model. That have done it with Smash DLC before. They used Ike’s model to create Cloud and they used Palutena for Bayonetta. It could be from that since Female Robin has ponytails.

        I think P5R is just going to be like an expansion/bonus content and that the new female is a confidant/new rival. I think P5S (which the same guy who leaked P5R also leaked) is going to be the definitive edition of the game. It’s supposedly coming to Switch/PS4 this fall

        That's feasible, but why would they go through the distinction of making one for Jack, and another, with the ponytail (in a costume slot, specifically), for Jane?

        Plus it fits in very neatly with the new girl happening to have a ponytail, seemingly being the focus of Royal, and sharing a month of information with Joker himself.

        She doesn't need to be a "traditional" FeMC, as long as she has the same general capabilities as Joker, it's possible for her to be a costume/echo (but seemingly costume with the datamine) for him.

        And why even make the 'Jane' distinction in the first place? It would be something like "Reflet1_pony_hairSystemShape2.mchp" if it was a simple copy-paste leftover from Robin (Reflet in files).

        I don't think they're actually related in the files. Jack6_C06_v01_070925.mb is one, while Jane1_pony_hairSystemShape2.mchp is the other. It's more likely that the string dump just drops random files all over the place. Not that its an impossibility mind you, just that it could be an entirely different ponytail character all together.

                          It seems with Ultimate they stepped away with just using characters' iconic poses after Smash 4 used them a lot and to be more unique. Seriously compare a lot of the Smash 4 characters renders with Ultimate and you'll see they went with replicating iconic poses for Smash 4.

                              Honestly, that would be a very Sakurai thing to do. Reveal an unexpected fighter then release with no warning on April 1st. I do doubt it would happen, but it does seem kinda possible.

                              Not playing as him, but a Direct is likely, even if we didn’t get the announcement for it at PAX as anticipated.

                              After all, we still don’t know what they’re adding to V 3.0.0 outside of Joker, so a Direct to both spill the full details on Joker (outside of the female alt which they’re probably saving for the 24th as others have said) and show us what’s being added to V3 makes since, especially since I’d wager they’re both dropping at the same time like V2 and Piranha Plant. Possibly the FP2 reveal as well (with just a trailer but no gameplay like Joker’s Game Awards trailer) but Joker being released near the end of the month makes that happening in a Direct likely slated for this week a bit more doubtful. We’ll see.

                                  Here's my hypothetical schedule of how it goes:

                                  Have April release Joker and reveal the new character (June).

                                  Release the 2nd in June (E3) and reveal the 3rd (Sept)

                                  Release the 3rd in Sept and reveal the 4th one (Nov)

                                  Release the 4th one and reveal the last one (Feb)

                                  Release the final one in Feb 2020 which is when to expect all DLC characters to finish.

                                  Almost an even amount of months in between.

                                  • Pass character 2 comes in June
                                  • Pass character 3 comes in August
                                  • Pass character 4 comes in October

                                                                    I think it's very likely at this point that we'll get a Smash direct as soon as next week--maybe even with fighter 2 announced for a simultaneous release, since they've been in the files with Joker from day 1--though I don't think we'll be seeing a release before April 25th. Atlus isn't likely to let Sakurai show off the Jane costume before Royal's full reveal at the Persona concert, but they might well throw her inclusion in Smash in as a final hype trailer there.

It's been four months since his reveal, and he was a last minute decision to be revealed at the VGA's, and they had to animate and voice that last minute. There had to be another character in development that was held off and already worked on to be pushed aside for Joker. And like you said, those 2 code names have been in the files since day 1

                                                                          Keep in mind tho that in the context of P5, the gun isn't actually real. The way the distorted worlds work is that if it looks real enough to the enemy, then it actually affects them. However, the gun itself IS still fake.

                                                                          I get what you're saying, and that's definitely a concern, but I think there are ways around it.

                                                                          Imagine if the "bullets" and particle effects upon firing/striking were hyper exaggerated in that iconic P5 splash art style. With sufficient stylization, its possible to convey a more fantasy nature. IIRC the ESRB actually gives a pass for that reason as well. Hell, maybe even use an actual toy gun for the model?

                                                                          I'm reasonably sure we'll see the handgun and some sort of ammo system as a part of Joker's character, given that it's so visually iconic to the character and a major part of the combat system in P5.

                                                                                  I think the reason the all out attack pose or the artwork pose isn't used is, as someone above mentioned, that Ultimate is kinda doing away with using iconic poses for a base and instead going with unique renders (IMO, it's probably because the former is for the fighter spirits)

Seriously compare a lot of the Smash 4 characters renders with Ultimate and you'll see they went with replicating iconic poses for Smash 4.
