Dublin Riots

01/12/23

On Thursday 23rd of November three school kids and a care worker were stabbed only yards from the city’s main thoroughfare.  The assailant turned out to be originally from Algeria and gave an excuse to the far right to organise and descend upon the city in an organised fashion to wreak havoc and threaten migrants.   They had planned the event prior to the stabbing.  There had been other murders and serious assaults perpetrated by migrants, so statistically it was only a matter of time before another incident would happen and they could take advantage of it.  (read more)

The International Criminal Court: The judicial branch of imperialism

27/11/23

In the context of the Zionist genocide in Gaza, a number of personalities and Palestinian solidarity organisations have asked that Netanyahu and others be put on trial by the International Criminal Court. This will not happen, that court has been described in vulgar but accurate terms as a stinker. It is true, its putrid stench is nauseating and the history of international tribunals is full of hypocrisy, even when they judge people who should be tried and punished. We all know of the Nuremberg Tribunal where the Nazis were put on trial.   (read more)

Book review: Disturbing vision of a draconian police state

04/10/23  (Socialist Voice)

Paul Lynch’s novel Prophet Song has deservedly been short-listed for this year’s Booker Literary Award. The author spins a chillingly realistic tale of an Ireland governed by a fascistic regime in the throes of an armed conflict with its local opponents. The regime’s definition of public order is maintained by a newly created Garda National Services Bureau, assisted by rigorously enforced media censorship. (read more)

The Martyrdom of Gaza: A Never Ending Saga

16/11/23

Norman Finkelstein published a book a number of years ago entitled Gaza: An Inquest Into Its Martyrdom. In it he looked at various major episodes in the long bloody onslaught on the people of Gaza, amongst them Operation Cast Lead and also the attack on the boat Mavi Marmara and the Goldstone Report, amongst other issues. He could have written it yesterday about the current genocidal plans of the Israeli state. The current Israeli offensive is just one more in a long line of massacres. This is not a review of Finkelstein’s book, though any book by him is worth reading and should be read.   (read more)

Feminists silent on Gaza genocide

15/11/23

The relentless bombing and slaughter of children and women in Gaza has brought millions on to the streets to oppose Israel's war crimes and for freedom
and democracy for Palestine. Civil society and progressive organisations have mobilised in Ireland and across the world against the Israeli savagery they see daily on TV and social media. To sit back and watch this genocide without condemning it is a betrayal of humanity. Shamefully many feminists and women's organizations have done just that. They are silent on what’s happening or support the Zionist Israeli state and its actions in Gaza.   (read more)

The Palestine solidarity movement we need to build

11/11/23

Some of the recent massive demonstrations in support of Gaza call for a comparison with the millions who poured onto the streets in a desperate attempt to avert the invasion of Iraq. However, once we make that comparison we are faced with the reality thar a much larger mobilisation than the current one ended in failure. Then, as now, a spontaneous mobilisation exerted very significant pressure on the warmongers but once they doubled down and it became clear that the war would continue the spontaneous movement started to decline.  (read more)
