What are some good speech to text software? by sabio17 in software

Hi. It took this long before I got the transcription results with a real-time audio stream (instead of an audio file).

The GPU optimized one I mentioned in my other reply is faster, but really useful real-time transcription is just a little out of reach for now

I don’t want to/know how to answer, so I am going to counter with a question. Ain’t I clever!

Sam is always rambling about the peaks and valleys of human experience, but how much does he really care about individual suffering? by InvestigatorLanky370 in samharris

Can you lead by example?

If life is so horrendously horrible, you should want to jump ship.

Why don’t you?

And if you cannot lead by example, who are you to want to murder everybody else and call that moral.

The smugness oozing from your and similar comments is so laughingly lacking in introspection it’s laughable.

We get it: your opinion on politics is informed, neutral, not at all biased, but most importantly not-Repuglican/fascist/literally Hitler and therefore “on the right side of history”, no matter what. Dems cannot be bad!

Y’all are experts on politics and Sam is regarded.

Best free audio to text transcription? by Skullysleepy17 in software

[–]daonlyfreez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to rely on an external service, for reasons of privacy or costs, you can run a local copy of Whisper (based on whisper.cpp). This is a GPU optimized version, speeds it up substantially compared to the native (CPU) whisper.cpp version.

Forget the Python versions that are out there. They are slow and usually need way more data.

Whisper can transcribe audio in many different languages, and if you pick the largest dataset and have a reasonably recent/fast computer, it’s very impressive what it can do with that dataset, because even the largest is comparatively tiny to what it can do.

Sotfware to burn CDs with files compatible with any player? by REDpanda1886 in software

[–]daonlyfreez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only an audio CD should work on any DVD player. The files are stored as .wav files, no compression, so you’ll be limited in the amount of audio that will fit on a CD.

Most DVD players know at least how to handle DivX and mp3 however, even “ancient” ones.

In your case, you are out of luck

You can run Whisper locally.

It is quite good, even if real-time transcription is limited/needs a very hefty machine.

The larger the model you use, the more accurate the transcription, but it will take more time.

For comparison I tested the times it took on my machine for the transcription to be generated with a streaming source. The smallest (tiny) model took 8 seconds, the largest around 45.

This is of course just my setup and the code isn’t using the GPU (yet).

But the difference in quality between the models is substantial.

So, for real-time transcription it is still too early, but for processing existing audio, it is very competent using the largest available models. And you can have it process the data at higher speeds too.

[Peter Gabriel] AI competition statement by ahydell in technology

[–]daonlyfreez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peter Gabriel has a long history of being on the forefront of creativity, many may not know this.

Embracing AI, yet on the other hand ask for a pause to contemplate, is not a bad position.

As long as everyone realizes, that currently AI’s capabilities are overhyped.

All “GPT/AI” you can try are, in essence, complicated search (prompt) engines, that require you to adapt to the machine to get the output you want.

There is a whole “prompt” industry.

On the AI model/training/dataset itself:

The input determines the output.

Locally running (private) datasets will come in the near future, but training your own data still needs substantial hardware.

I’m hoping for open, private, locally running derivatives, that serve only the user.

This was my input regarding the “contemplating about what the fuck are we doing before we continue” thing.

If you cannot pay your costs, including wages, you might, gasp, run less profits, or even, more gasping, at a loss.

You might come up with “reasons” why the owners have a natural right to be profitable, but I think you would be the ignorant one on basic economics.
