I’ll go first: I make it a point when I visit a new country to try out their McDonalds.
food is always shaped by a countries history and culture, so I think it’s super interesting to see the country specific items they have (beer in germany, Parmesan puffs in Italy, rice buns in Japan!) Same reason that even though I hate cooking I still love to visit foreign grocery stores!

I had a personal alarm on my bag, one where if you pull the strap a loud alarm goes off. I got it because I'm a solo traveler and hike a lot and wanted something to set off if I twisted my ankle in the middle of the woods.
I forgot about it and left it on my bag that I don't normally check, got my bag back without it attached. I imagine the cord got pulled during handling and the poor airport employees had to smash it to get it to stop yelling at them. Sorry guys 🤦♀️

I don't have anything outright crazy but I do have some thoughts that may go against with some prevailing views you might see online regularly.
Brussels is alright actually - I don't really get why it gets so much hate 😆 it's okay, mid sized with some sights, Ghent football stadium, atomium. People might find it a bit dull, sure, but there are worse places.
The negatives of Paris are overblown - I'll never get passionately hating Paris, its Okay and great if you love art & fashion. I think people that go with a perfect view of the city in mind will always be let down (its not even that dirty).
London draws too much attention from the rest of the UK - there are a number of nice cities and towns all over the UK, Brighton, Bath, Oxford, Swansea, Manchester, Edinburgh. You'd think London is the only city we have!

It sounds so simple in hindsight... but whether you're new to solo travelling or doing it for the first time, bring along a book or two in your backpack – it completely transforms the experience.
I've been solo travelling for years and – not being much of a reader – always ended up awkwardly staring around or looking at my phone. It's rekindled a long lost love of reading and for me has been the part I didn't know was missing.
There's no joy like idling away a few hours in a beautiful European square or the cosy corner of a cocktail bar while tuning out the digital world.

Hey Reddit, I am in my mid 30’s and have been solo traveling Europe and Southeast Asia, which has been the best time of my life. However my parents have not traveled, are brainwashed by Fox News, and think the entire world outside the US is a warzone (it honestly feels safer in Asia). They constantly beg me to come back to the US and my mom was so stressed that she had a minor heart attack. I feel horrible but this is my only chance in my career to have this freedom and don’t want to deny myself seeing the world. I have explained repeatedly about crime stats etc but they refuse to hear me out. How do I cope with this? Do I give up on my dreams of travel? Thank you for reading
EDIT: Also they were afraid to tell me about the heart attack until a month after. I would’ve come home immediately had I known.

Another post refreshed this deeply repressed embarrassing memory in my mind today, and the cringe-wound feels fresh again, so I thought I’d share it with you all.
We were staying in a luxury suite that had a personal room attendant who we met briefly when we arrived that afternoon. We were in a hurry to get out and explore, so we ditched our belongings in the room, and headed out to sightsee. When we returned late that evening, we were shocked to find that our luggage had been unpacked for us. Our toiletries were in the bathroom, neatly placed on his and hers trays; our clothes were hung, and shoes carefully lined … and then the kicker:
MY LINGERIE WAS SPLAYED OUT ON THE BED, ANGLED TOWARD THE DOOR, WITH A TRAIL OF ROSE PETALS LEADING UP TO AND SURROUNDING IT - A PLATE OF CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRIES AND A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE NEARBY.
I had a few pieces of lingerie in my bag, so this one had been chosen. And, the room attendant must’ve not noticed, but it had (I’m rocking in fetal position as I write this) …… already been used.
I. Was. Mortified.
Needless to say, I could not look our male room attendant in the eye for the remainder of the stay.
Tell me your embarrassing travel stories & let’s wallow in our secondhand embarrassment together.

I live in Toronto and my job is in the Tavel industry. I've lived in 4 countries including the USA and despite what some of us like to say Canadians and Americans(for the most part) are very similar and our cities have a very very similar feel. I kind of get annoyed by the Europeans I deal with for work who come here and just complain about how they thought it would be more different from the states.
Europeans of r/travel did you expect Canada to be completely different than our neighbours down south before you visited? And what was your experience like in these two North American countries.
