Tabletop games
Topic on Reddit
Hello all, hope you're having a good day (first bit of proper sun this morning in Fife in weeks).
I'm an avid tabletop wargamer and board gamer and I was wondering if you all could share the locations of boardgame / model shops in Scotland. I already know of the numerous Games Workshops / Warhammer stores, but I was more meaning independents such as Common Ground Games (Stirling), Highlander Games (Dundee) and Accent Gaming (Dunfermline). Special mention to Wonderland Models in Edinburgh which isn't a game store, but sells scale terrain that can be used (plus the bairn loves the shop).

Often abstract games have very simple rules and no theme. But I really like getting into a theme and into character, even if it's short of true RP. Any simple games that actually have a lot of depth?

Moreover we're interested in having fans play test the games and help capture the feel for each title! So let me know if you are interested!
EDIT: WOW, You all really want to play these games! I have to go work on these games now, but I'll have someone on my team comb through and grab everyone who is interested and add them to the list. We'll be sending out a survey to your reddit accounts in the coming days to capture your info and try to find a chance for everyone who wants to playtest! Thanks everyone!

Obviously, part of the reason the games I mentioned became institutions is that they existed in a time before economies could support giant companies mass producing copies of thousands of different titles every year. When someone made a great game, it was THE GAME (or one of few) in that time and place.
But setting aside the hurdles of "getting there" in the 21st century, which game(s) would be deserving of that kind of timeless constancy, and why?
Aww, cripes. I didn't know I'd have to write a description. How many words is that so far, like a hundred? Soooo, yeah. Mildly interesting stuff. Stuff that interests you. Mildly. It's in the name, ffs.

I was recently called into customs to explain a board game order as they didn't understand what it was. Have you ever tried to explain a big box board game to someone who has never played any board games? This is how it went:
"Its a board game"
"what is a board game?"
"its something you can play for fun."
"Like a guitar?" (Red flag: luxury taxation on musical instruments)
"No"
"Like a video game?" (Red flag: electronic import taxes are much higher)
"No"
"what does it do?"
"You have fun playing it. Like a standard deck of cards but more involved"
"Ohhhh..... so it's for gambling" (Red flag: Gabling items are strictly prohibited)
"No no It's more like Chess or Dominoes.... but with more stuff."
"So its for kids?"
"......Sure"
I half expected him to end it with "kids are a luxury.... luxury taxation!"
I remember having a similar experience when I got in a crokinole board. What was the most bizarre explanation you had to give?

People often ask for the best games, the ones that are must-haves or at least must-plays. I ask the opposite question - what games are absolutely the worst and should be avoided at all costs, for any reasons at all!

Saw this idea for movies and bands and thought it might work for our favorite — board games. Just name 2 board games that you enjoy and folks will recommend a 3rd that is (hopefully) new to you inspired by what you already like. And go!
Edit: Wow! This is way more fun than expected and there are some PERFECT answers to bridge some obscure games… Maybe Tom Vasel and his friends can answer some of these bc they’re too hard for me, but there’re some very impressive brains on this sub!!
Next edit: TY ALL SO MUCH for participating and generating some amazing new game ideas for people. Some folks have sent messages of gratitude for the great content that you’re all providing for their search of new games experiences. Great job to the community’s brain trust!!
