Howdy r/Games. A new generation of consoles is kicking off and to celebrate we will be creating a series of megathreads for specific topics related to each console's launch. We will keep this thread stickied for the coming days as a hub for all of the discussions we create (since reddit has restrictions for how many threads can be stickied at once). We will have user impression threads, technical issue threads, launch hype threads and much more. We are excited for the launches and a lot of us will be gaming it up - if we let anything slip through the cracks give us a shout in modmail, if you'd like to hangout and chat with some of the r/Games users or moderators, we have a Discord server you can jump into.

The biggest subreddit for leaks and rumours in the gaming community, for all games across all systems.
From now on we will be handing out more significant bans and keeping our eyes open for console warring and general toxicity.
This includes things like
-
Poking fun at another fanbase for no reason
-
Instigating console warring comments for no reason
-
Calling someone a fanboy because of their opinion
-
REPLYING to someone else who started a console warring comment chain by joining in the console warring/toxic comments, that's on you.
If you're not talking about the topic of the thread, and you're just commenting something like"Xbox/Playstation fanboys are going to have a field day with this one!" you will be banned.
This subreddit is for talking and speculating about gaming leaks and rumors, and the future of gaming projects. We're not here to debate over fanbases and we're not going to support that.
Even if "Someone else started it!" you will be banned. Don't contribute to console wars. Your first offense will be at least 5 days, and it will move up to permanent on multiple offenses.
Furthermore if your account has a history of console warring or being toxic and we see your comments are continuing this trend, you're going to get shadow-banned and we're not going to tell you about it.
The community has voiced their opinion that this place has too much console warring going on and we agree, so we're stepping up to do something about it.
Don't contribute to console warring, taunting, teasing, poking fun, or anything else at fanbases of certain consoles.
Even if your comment has a thousand upvotes, if its contributing to any of these, you will be banned.
Even if you you're responding to a toxic user who is console warring and you respond with toxic console warring towards them, you will be banned. Two wrongs dont make a right. Just downvote, report, and move on.
Thanks!
A gaming sub free from the news, hype and drama that surround current releases, catering instead to gamers who wait at least 12 months after release to play a game. Whether it's price, waiting for bugs/issues to be patched, DLC to be released, don't meet the system requirements, or just haven't had the time to keep up with the latest releases.
Hey there, Everybody!
As you can tell by the title (and after plenty of internal discussion and reading comments on the sub) we want to propose an extension of the standard "Rule #1" of the sub for the two latest console releases:
Rule 1:
All general gaming conversations must revolve around playing, reviewing, recommending, or discussing titles and/or platforms that were released (v1.0+) at least 6 months ago.
Even though we are just about at the 6 month mark for these consoles, demand is still very high (while supply still very low). We believe for this reason allowing PS5/Series X posts to start flooding into the sub would go against our main mission; avoiding hype and over saturation of new releases (which has always applied to consoles as well as games)
However, as we always have for the almost 10 years the sub has been in existence, we want the community to voice their opinion and have say in this. So please, think this over, vote, and voice your approval or disapproval in the comments below.
Thanks for reading, and for keeping this place the awesome community it is!!

I thought it would be interesting to look which first party games both companies have released on console since the launch of the current gen consoles in november 2020. Take a look at all games that arrived for the first time on console, at older console games that were re-released as native current gen versions, remasters or 1:1 remakes, at games that were delayed and at the metacritic scores of all releases. For those interested I also included sale numbers and player numbers which includes subscriptions.

EDIT: Hi all, we wanted to add some context for why PS5 players won't be able to play at 120 fps. Our team’s main focus this year was our recent free to play transition, and updating major features like our Tournaments system. While working on these updates, we had to make some tough decisions on what else we could achieve. Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately this wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere.
A place for theoretical discussions about business and stocks - specifically GameStop Stock ($GME). Opinions and memes welcome. None of this is financial advice.
"GameStop’s flagship store will develop into three different levels. In the basement there will be the gaming arena, where it will be possible to try out all the newest video games. On the first floor there is a 270° LED wall created to offer an immersive experience. Finally, on the second floor, there is the sales area, in this case completely renovated. For the first time GameStop has created three different sections dedicated to different consumers, namely ProGaming, ProStreamer and Home. This way, customers can find the perfect product for their needs. Whether it’s a gaming monitor for the esports enthusiast, a streaming microphone for the professional streamer, or a comfortable gaming chair for the everyday user, you’ll find it all." Source.

Good afternoon r/hardwareswap.
First off, Happy Holidays.
For the past month or so I've obtained several game consoles. The objective has been to beat out scalpers or bots that buy these high-demand consoles and let people this holiday season have the chance to purchase them. I won't be seeking to profit on these sales. The goal is to see these consoles reach someone's home this holiday season as a Christmas present, or hey for yourself too!

Forgot to mention, one must comment here before PM'ing and have a trade history.

I will avoid selling to resellers. I'll take my time with selling these consoles to proper buyers.
Update:
Another important note is that I've been receiving offers of $600 + shipping for the consoles. I'm flattered but I'll be sticking with the listed price for all buyers.
What I will do is enable buyers to donate more if they wish but this is separate of the console price and (obviously) optional.
PayPal Friends & Services even has a donation option in the invoice I believe, so I"ll be using that.
The proceeds of the donations will be used for toys and essential goods (blankets, food, clothing) I can purchase to donate in Holiday Food Drives.
(I'll be adding an imgur of the stuff I plan to purchase from the potential donations). Mods let me know if this okay to do if not I'll remove this option.
Thank you everyone for the support!
The consoles have to ship by December 15th or so for them to arrive in time for Christmas (or sooner).
Thanks!

Hello and welcome to r/Games Live/Recap Thread of PlayStation's June 11th "We're not holding an E3 event on June 11th" Event where we expect Sony to show off games for the PS5 aka the PlayStation 5 aka that PS Quintuple aka...... (you get the idea), along with the design of the console itself.
The event starts at 8 PM UTC (timezone-free countdown timer) and you can watch the event live on YouTube (it is also available in Japanese, Spanish, French and German on PlayStation's YouTube channel), Twitch and Twitter. If you're unable to do so I'll post live updates on this thread.
The stream will run at 1080p 30 FPS but they will upload 4K trailers to YouTube after the event has concluded so I'll link those along with pertinent info like genre and development studio in the 'Summary' section of this post later. Sony also recommends using headphones because 'there is some cool audio work' in the show, so grab your best pair of over-ear or on-ear headphones to watch the event.
r/Games is also doing a live event reaction thread and you can catch it here. You can also discuss the event on r/Games' Discord server, join here.
Will we get to see any JRPGs? Will Mark Cerny finally release Marble Madness 2? What game is Bluepoint making? How many more bad jokes can OP fit into this post? Your guess is as good as mine! 1 hour until the event begins.

The pre-show footage that they're showing now does have some cool audio work. I've tried it out with earphones and on-ear headphones and I really recommend the headphones. Earphones sound 'flat' while the headphones offer a wider, larger, more complete sound. I know it kinda sounds stupid but trust me on this, use headphones if you can.

That's it for the conference folks. Loved the press conference, I don't really understand the complaints, my only issue with it was pacing. They showed so many short trailers and then proceeded to the next without letting us digest what was shown. I'll link the 4K trailer below after a few minutes. Thanks for reading!
The central hub for all news, updates, rumors, and topics relating to the Nintendo Switch. We are a fan-run community, not an official Nintendo forum.
Introduction
I'm primarily a PC gamer, but also own a Switch. I didn't like having to toggle the input of my primary monitor every time I switched between them and only being able to play sound from one device at a time, so I decided to do something about that. The endresult of that is being able to switch from playing a PC game to playing a Switch game without the controller ever leaving your hand and can be seen here: https://youtu.be/beU6Q9TQXvw
Since there seems to be some interest in how I set up the whole thing, I've decided to do a full guide on how to achieve this.
Edit: Yes, I know that this guide is overkill for most people, but it also has some unique benefits that you can't get by simply toggling the input source of your monitor.
Requirements
-
Pretty much any supported Windows OS.
-
A low latency capture card capable of capturing 1080p@60Hz footage. Personally I've chosen a Extremecap U3, so the guide will be based on that.
-
If choosing a USB3.0 capture card make sure your PC has a high-quality USB3.0 controller that is supported by the capture card.
-
A non-potato CPU as we won't be doing any hardware accelerated video decoding. The better your CPU the more image enhancements will be possible.
-
(Optional) A Switch Pro Controller and a USB cable with USB-C on one side. The Pro Controller comes with one, but you might want a second one for simplicity.
Benefits and Drawbacks
-
Benefits
-
Instantaneous switching between your PC and Switch.
-
Being able to play Switch games windowed.
-
The audio of your PC and Switch will be able to play simultaneously through your speakers.
-
Control the volume of your Switch through the PC.
-
Customizing and improving the graphics through a variety of image enhancements.
-
A shortcut in Steam that will also notify your friends you're playing on your Switch.
-
Playing a PC game, then a Switch game, then a PC game again without ever having to let go of the Controller.
-
Access to the Steam overlay.
-
Capture high-quality Switch footage.
-
(Play your Switch games on a virtual monitor in VR. Why? Because you can.)
-
-
Drawbacks
-
Sadly, the capture card I've chosen only supports 4:2:2 chroma subsampling, so the color quality will be slightly degraded. Image enhancements can make up for it though.
-
Additional latency, but it's barely noticeable. While I haven't done any tests it feels comparable to a wired Steam Link if not better.
-
Your PC obviously needs to be running when playing on the Switch in docked mode.
-
Basic setup
On the hardware side you basically just connect the Switch dock to your capture card through HDMI and the capture card to the PC using a USB cable.
The software side gets a bit more complicated. At first you need the drivers for your capture card so download and install these. In the case of Avermedia capture cards you just need to install the pure driver and not the included Capture/Streaming suite, although it still could prove useful for testing purposes.
Since we won't use the included suite, we'll need a media player capable of streaming the content from a capture card. This is where MPC-BE comes in. I'll recommend the x64 edition. If you're already using MPC-BE you should download the a portable version of it so that the Switch-specific configurations we make won't affect regular playback.
After extracting MPC-BE into a folder, the first you should do first is renaming the .exe into something nicer like 'SwitchPlayer.exe'. Then immediately after that start the player, go into options and enable 'Store settings in the player folder', so that your portable installation is truly portable.
Setting up the capture card with MPC-BE can be a bit finnicky and quite probably specific to your capture card. Here's what I did:
Open MPC-BE and go into the settings where you'll find a group called 'Capture'. There you choose your capture device for video and audio. Additionally, for some reason I've had to set the country code to the one for my country (49), or else nothing would play. Then close the settings and open the capture settings with Ctrl+8. There make sure the video capture is set at 1920x1080@60Hz, video and audio is recorded and is uncompressed and V/A buffers are set to 0. Close the panel, select 'File' - 'Open Device' and you should see your Switch screen, provided the Switch is running.
With the basic setup done you could already use your Switch through your PC right now with most of the benefits, so every other step from here on out is optional.
Advanced MPC-BE and madVR configuration
But why stop here when so much more can be done? Let's start with installing madVR. It's a video renderer with excellent video quality that can be used with MPC-BE (or any other DirectShow player). Extract it, preferably into a subfolder of MPC-BE then launch 'install.bat' with Admin rights. Now madVR is registered into your system and can be used by MPC-BE.
Next start MPC-BE go to 'External Filters' and add 'madVR' and set it to 'Prefer'. If it doesn't even show up in the list of available Filters then something has gone wrong during installation. After that go into the 'Video' section of the options and select madVR as the Video Renderer. Now madVR should be used whenever something is being played. This can be checked by the trayicon that pops up whenever madVR is in use.
With everything installed, lets go over the settings of MPC-BE and madVR, starting with MPC-BE:
-
Player
-
Enable 'Limit window proportions on resize' so that you get now black borders when you resize the window.
-
-
Keys
-
Set a hotkey for 'Open Device' so you have a quick way of restarting the stream. Useful when setting up everything.
-
Set a hotkey for 'Exit' so that you can exit fast. This gets particularly important when you also want to use the Pro Controller on the PC.
-
-
Logo
-
Not really important, but you can set the internal logo to blank so that there's no icon when there's no input. Alternatively choose a external logo of your liking.
-
-
Fullscreen
-
Enable 'Launch files in fullscreen'. Pretty self-explanitory and highly recommended when planning to integrate it into Steam.
-
-
Audio
-
As the audio renderer I recommend the 'MPC Audio Renderer'. Just make sure that in 'Properties' the WASAPI mode is set to 'Shared' so that other sound can be played simultaneously.
-
Now onto madVR. Most of these changes are subjective and may need a strong CPU, so feel free to experiment. The fastest way to access madVR's settings is to start playback and then go to its trayicon and open the settings from there. Open all the folders on the left side and change the following things:
-
Artifact removal
-
Enable 'Reduce Banding Artifacts' and set it to high.
-
Enable 'Reduce Ringing Artifacts'.
-
-
Image enhancements
-
'Sharpen Edges' at 1.0
-
'Crispen Edges' disabled
-
'Thin Edges' at 1.0
-
'Enhance Detail at 1.0
-
'Luma sharpen' at 0.65
-
'Adaptive sharpen' at 0.5 with linear light
-
'Activate Anti-Bloating filter' at 100% strength
-
'Activate Anti-Ringing filter' enabled
-
-
Image downscaling
-
Cubic set to Bicubic150
-
-
Image upscaling
-
'Lanczos' set to 3 taps
-
-
General settings
-
'Use Direct3D 11 for presentation' and 'present a frame for every VSync' enabled.
-
Lower CPU and GPU queue size. Your playback might freak out when doing this. If so, restart your player and the issues should be gone. If not, increase these values again.
-
-
Windowed Mode + Exclusive Mode
-
Disable 'Present several frames in advance' with 1 backbuffer. Again your playback might freak out.
-
-
Smooth Motion
-
Set to 'Enable smooth motion frame rate conversion', 'always'. Your playback might freak out again.
-
-
Dithering
-
Set to 'Error Diffusion - Option 2'
-
As a final step you can remove all the controls (and even the window borders) from the player by pressing Ctrl+0 as often as necessary.
Now video quality should be much improved. One thing you should check however if your CPU can handle the stress and isn't dropping any frames. To check that open the stats (Ctrl+4) and watch if the dropped is increasing. If so, then you might need to scale back the image enhancements a bit. If not, then feel free to experiment further with these settings because, again, these are pretty subjective.
Using the Pro Controller on the PC
Also optional. Steam recently added support for the Switch Pro Controller (currently only available in the Steam Beta) which makes this a lot less painful. Simply open up Big Picture, go into the settings, then select Controller Settings and enable Switch Pro Controller support. Done.
As for actually connecting your controller you have two options, each with their own unique drawback:
-
Bluetooth: Pair the controller through Windows like any other device. However you'll have to redo the pairing process, both on PC and Switch, every time you move between them, which is kinda tedious.
-
USB: My preferred method. Simply connect the Pro Controller with a USB cable to the PC and you're done. Disconnect it again when you want to use it with your Switch. While you do have to put up with it not being wireless on your PC it makes switching painless and you can even go from playing a PC game to a Switch game and back without ever letting the controller out of your hands.
Adding a shortcut to Steam
Now onto easier things that only apply if you want Steam integration. First up launch MPC-BE, open your capture device stream, open the Playlist editor (Ctrl+7) and save the playlist as "switch.mpcpl" in the folder of your portable MPC-BE installation.
Then go over to Steam and add MPC-BE as a non-Steam shortcut. Open the properties of the newly created shortcut, rename it "Nintendo Switch" or whatever you like and, more importantly, click "Set Launch Options" and set it to "switch.mpcpl" without the quotes so that the playback automatically starts whenever the shortcut gets launched. Save these changes and when you start your shortcut the stream should automatically start.
You can also right-click the shortcut and set a custom image to give it a nice look in grid view and Big Picture mode. Here's a banner I made: https://imgur.com/a/9w6vlog
I'd also recommend setting up a custom Controller Configuration in Steam for your controller, where you bind a button on your controller to the hotkey you set up in MPC-BE for closing the application.
FAQ
-
Why a USB 3.0 capture card and not a PCI capture card?
-
In my search for a low latency capture card the Extremecap U3 was the only one that supported 1080p@60Hz and explicitely advertised being able to play off of the capture card.
-
-
Why MPC-BE instead of VLC or [INSERT VIDEO PLAYER HERE]?
-
Outside of the superior configurability and ability to utilize madVR along VLC also isn't able to output audio due to lack of support for a specific codec.
-
-
Can you use tools like SVP to interpolate 30FPS games to 60FPS or even 144FPS?
-
I've tried to make it work, but no. While it technically does work, the input lag in turn goes through the roof. And with that I mean multiple seconds of input lag.
-
-
Could I use this guide for my Xbox, Playstation, SNES Mini or whatever?
-
Probably. I don't know how well HDCP protected content works and how much other consoles utilize it, so no guarantees.
-
If there's anything missing or something to improve (or you've found one of my numerous spelling errors), feel free to comment.
The pre orders for XSX and XSS only started yesterday (Sep-29) in Brazil. PS5 pre orders, on the other hand, started at the same world-wide date (Sep-17) here.
After 12 days PS5s are not sold out yet in any of the top 3 national retailers. And several retailers are now giving 5-10% discounts. ps5_link, ps5_link2
About 24 hours after launch, XSX sold out in 2 of those 3 largest retailers. xsx_link1, xsx_link2
Amazon (which is new in the country) still have XSXs available, and lists XSX and XSS as the 2 best selling items in its "Games and Consoles" category, with the PS5 in 4th position. amazon_rank_link amazon_screenshot
PS.: Before you envy us for still being able to buy both consoles on launch day, take into consideration the fact we have one of the “world’s most expensive consoles”, at R$4.999, which is close to double the $499 US price, due to insane import taxes. Most Brazilians will end up buying those consoles in the grey market after launch, imported through Paraguai or the US.
The one and only destination for all console gaming. Oldschool, newschool and everyschool. Totally free of bias and console warfare - Lets talk consoles!
Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a conundrum here in making a decision for myself. I'm looking for a game console I can play at work, and it's come down to the Xbox Series X and the Nintendo Switch. Honestly would have chosen the PS5 but they're like finding a unicorn or a needle in a haystack, so that's out of the question.
So, a little bit of backstory for the reasons it came down to the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox Series X. I'm a firefighter and I'm at the Station for 48 hour shifts, after I'm finished with chores and stuff, I'm able to sit down and play games or do whatever. I'm a dedicated PC gamer, and mostly play that at home, so this console isn't really going to be used a ton outside of work. I've done a fair bit of research on the two, and I'm not entirely sure which one I should get or would be better for me.
On one hand, the Switch is cheaper than the Xbox Series X, but has less games and weaker hardware, resolution and FPS. But it also has Legend of Zelda and Pokemon games. On the other, the Xbox has stronger hardware, tons of games and backwards compatibility with older Xbox games and Xbox Game Pass, but is nearly 2x the cost of a Switch.
Maybe hearing some opinions will help me make up my mind?
Edit: After much deliberation, I initially settled on a Switch. However, when I went to the store to buy, I offhandedly joked with the cashier if they hid any Playstation 5s in the back. Turns out that they did, so I ended up getting a Playstation 5 instead. Probably for the best, I was thinking back to when I bought a 3DS for the same reason. Turns out I just liked the thought of playing Pokemon again, and wasn't much interested in actually doing it. Anyway, thanks for your opinions and help on making my mind up, I still appreciate it.
/r/Zelda is the unofficial hub for anything and everything The Legend of Zelda - the iconic Nintendo series. Feel free to share news, reviews, opinions, fan art, humour, videos, or anything else Zelda. For fans, by fans.
So full disclosure, I'm almost 40. My first Zelda game was the original on NES. My favorite Zelda games are A Link to the Past on SNES and Link's Awakening on GameBoy. Loved them. They're both in my top 10 video games of all time (maybe even top 5, I'd have to think about it). I haven't played a Zelda game since Majora's Mask though.
Fast forward many years where I went through a gaming lull and then have been a pretty steady PlayStation console player since the PS4 release. I usually play the shit out of 2-3 games in a year and that's it. I tend to reach for the open world RPGs (Witcher, Skyrim, the newest Assassin's Creeds, Hogwarts Legacy, NMS, etc). More of a casual gamer - especially these days.
Anyway I got a Switch because Nintendo has always been king for handheld gaming and I travel for work occasionally, so it's great to have on the road.
Decided to get back into the Zelda world recently and bought TOTK (I can't even remember why I didn't play BOTW, probably just where I was at in life when it came out), and while I'm blown away at the depth and the breadth of this game, I swear to god I've almost snapped my damn Switch in half a dozen times out of sheer rage playing this game. I cannot defeat Colgera despite watching tons of videos and reading tons of guides.
Zelda games have never been "easy" by any means, the challenging dungeons and puzzles have always been my favorite part, but this is something else, haha. I can't decide if it's because my old ass just can't hack it anymore or if this is just how difficult they are now.
Thoughts? I'm curious everyone else's opinion.

https://www.eurogamer.net/nintendo-demoed-switch-2-to-developers-at-gamescom
Developer presentations for Switch 2 took place behind closed doors, Eurogamer understands, with partners shown tech demos of how well the system is designed to run.
One Switch 2 demo is a souped up version of Switch launch title Zelda: Breath of the Wild, designed to hit the Switch 2's beefier target specs. (To be clear, though - this is just a tech demo. There's no suggestion the game will be re-released.)
https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sources-nintendo-showed-switch-2-demos-at-gamescom/
Another VGC source claimed that Nintendo showcased Epic's impressive The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo – originally released to showcase the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021 – running on target specs for its next console.
The demo is said to have been running using Nvidia's DLSS (3.5) upscaling technology, with advanced ray tracing enabled and visuals comparable to Sony's and Microsoft's current-gen consoles (however, it should be noted this does not mean the Switch successor will sport raw power anywhere near that of PS5 or Xbox Series X, which aren't portable devices).

Which one should I buy, I wanna experience gaming and I have very limited funds and I don't wanna regret doing this. Pls help. I have never played any games before except far cry 2 and pop two thrones.
/r/truegaming is a subreddit dedicated to meaningful, insightful, and high-quality discussion on all topics gaming.
As a kid I owned and played on a few different consoles, the last one being N64. I haven't really looked at games (on any platform) since.
I am now a grown man and decided to fire up my N64 again and I was delighted by the joyful atmosphere of games like Yoshi's Story or Diddy Kong Racing. Everything is just pleasant, ranging from characters' little squeals to butterflies resting on flowers to little frogs that you can drive over and they just bounce back with a cute noise. And of course, the games are FUN. I played them with other adults and we had a blast, very often laughing out loud together.
So I thought "wow, I'd love to spend money on the latest generation of gaming consoles now!"
So I looked at the consoles for sale today, and found:
-
Nintendo Switch: lots of joyful/pleasant games, but inferior performance (e.g., far less impressive graphics).
-
Playstation 5: great performance but most games are dark/gloomy/aggressive.
-
xbox: ditto.
What I really want is a console that is as powerful as the PS5 or xbox AND has lots of joyful/pleasant games to choose from. After days of googling and reading and watching reviews, I'm becoming convinced that this doesn't exist.
I'd be willing to spend lots of money if I felt I could get amazing visuals/performance and delightful games but, as it stands, I'm really thinking of just sticking to my crusty N64 and Diddy Kong Racing's awful-looking (but joyful) polygons.
Am I onto something or did I just research poorly?

Edit 5: Add: “PERMANENTLY.” After reflecting on the comments in response to my post and being reminded Nintendo has done BC in the past, I think it’s important to note: the digital era should bring about permanent BC. I put this edit at the top because it’s an important distinction and should address all comments reminding me Nintendo has done BC in the past, but not for the long haul. Those comments, though, which were helpful in thinking through the various nuances of this topic. Now, on to my original post:
I know. Nintendo does their own thing. That’s fine. But this is absolutely an area in which they should imitate their competitors.
I bought the NES through GameCube when they launched. I skipped the Wii and WiiU, came back to gaming via Xbox and PC in 2014, and I camped out for Switch Day 1.
I’ve spent thousands building my Nintendo collection, and I’ve spent quite a lot on my Switch library. When Nintendo releases its next console, I want my entire Switch library to seamlessly port over. Microsoft is doing it. Playstation is about to do it.
I just played the first few hours of Dishonored on Xbox (a 2012 game), and I did it not because I purchased it; I did it *because I am a PAYING subscriber to GamePass Ultimate*.
Just sayin’, Nintendo. Backward compatibility doesn’t mean you have to “lose money.” If you do it right, you'll MAKE money, and, like Microsoft, you'll have folks like me giving you money and thanking you for taking it. That's what any genius business does, right?

Edit: Thanks to everyone for the comments! Sorry if I don't reply to every single one. The general gamut of perspectives here is: VC is what Nintendo should do. Or... a subscription is what Nintendo should do. Or... Nintendo will never do BC. Or... Nintendo should copy GP but offer purchase options. Obviously, Nintendo has several routes it could go; no matter our opinions on the longterm solution, I think we can all agree that we as consumers want what's best for us: access to old Nintendo games we've purchases or subscribed to, and we want that until we die. How we pay for and acquire said games is up to Nintendo, of course, but we all agree it would be nice if it were a consumer-friendly option.
Edit 2: It is clear that this conversation is evolving into a subscription vs. VC debate, both of which have their merits. This is a great conversation, and I look forward to seeing how it plays out over the next several decades.
Edit 3: This is definitely more complicated than my original post, and I really appreciate everyone’s responses. Great thoughts, ideas, experiences, and opinions in here! I encourage everyone to skim the whole thing, as there really are some good perspectives from all sides as to how Nintendo should move forward.
NOTE: Tons of folks have mentioned that Nintendo did, in fact, do BC for a few generations (GC to Wii to WiiU, DS to 3DS). Good catch. As I mentioned, I skipped a decade of gaming and completely forgot those existed! Thanks for the reminders. So, I think a bit of clarification is in order. I think what we’re all talking about here is more than just BC. We’re talking about “how does Nintendo handle BC moving beyond the Switch?” Into the primarily-(only?)digital era. That’s really the question. Yes, they’ve done BC in the past, but the Switch has been a different beast because of its place in the technology timeline. First it was carts, then discs, and now, carts and digital. Their strategy now? Well, the WiiU failed, so, they ported a bunch of WiiU games to the Switch, and folks like me bought them. It made sense from a business perspective, but for folks who bought a WiiU, it was understandably frustrating. So, what about a subscription service? NSO has been their first foray into a subscription service, and it would seem they are still figuring out what exactly they want to do with said service over the long haul. Here’s where I land after reading quite a lot of these comments about Nintendo having supported BC in the past… I think they’ll do it again next gen because of the digital transition. I know it’s yet another divisive subject, but I do believe we are headed to an entirely digital future. Preferences aside, let’s assume for the sake of argument that digital is inevitable. Or at least more prominent. What makes sense for Nintendo? How can they get people to spend money? They’ve tried VC. Now, they’re trying subscription… perhaps they’ll expand upon that, perhaps not. I do think though, that consumers are getting more used to things just carrying over in other arenas outside Nintendo. Just look at all the comments here from Xbox people (myself included) saying how much they love GamePass. Or think about phones. We don’t buy new software when we upgrade our phones. We just… transfer old files over. It’s up to developers to update their apps. I see no reason why Nintendo can’t follow suit with Switch 2 (working title :)) and make Switch games work on the new system. Personally, if they gave me an option to pay $15 a month for every Nintendo title ever, freaking take my money. They’ve got 32 million subscribers as of September 2021, and NSO isn’t great. Imagine how many they’d have if the service was a vast ocean of Nintendo (and third party) titles. Perhaps I’m wrong, but I do think this is where we’ll end up. Some sort of model like the Xbox GamePass subscription with the option to buy. I would say that’s an entirely different post, but as this massive discussion has shown, there is definitely some overlap. Thanks for contributing to a lively discussion everyone! :)
Edit 4: u/MatNomis made some great points about going all digital for Switch and then choosing to buy the next console or not based on how Nintendo handles BC. Thought it was worth mentioning as part of the discussion.

/r/hardware is a place for quality computer hardware news, reviews, and intelligent discussion.
This will mark me as a fanboy to many people, but I'm not. I don't want a Series X and actually planned to get a PS5 this generation. I skipped the PS3 and PS4, so that's why I'm so disappointed by the new hardware and confused about the glowing reviews.
-
The standard PS5 is the same price as the Series X but less powerful. It will perform worse in multi-platform games. This is down to both the CPU being slower, the GPU being less powerful, and both being variable. It's not a "let's wait and see" situation because we know how the technology in both system works. If you're reviewing a console at release, this should factor into your score.
-
The PS5 uses more power. If it was more powerful that would at least have an explanation, but it's weaker and therefore less efficient. That should be a knock against it because power efficiency really does matter these days. We all care about the environment!
-
PS5 has good backwards compatibility for PS4 but does not have ANY backwards compatibility for PS1, PS2, or PS3. These are objectively features that are missing compared to Series X compatibility with 6th and 7th gen.
-
The Series X has more storage space, and both the internal and add-in storage is user-replacable. We have also seen that a lot of backwards compatible games load faster on Series X. I think reviewers really dropped the ball by not waiting for more next gen multi-plats in order to run apple-to-apples loading comparisons. PS5 still deserves credit for the on-paper speed advantage and the non-proprietary add-in storage.
-
The PS5 has inferior resolution output to Series X. It doesn't support VRR, ALLM, or 1440p. It also doesn't support 8K, though that doesn't really matter. These should still factor into a hardware review.
-
The actual box is very large, the stand feels cheap, and the design could most charitably be described as "divisive". While nowhere near the most important part of a console, comparing it to the objectively smaller and less attention-grabbing Series X should be considered in a review.
-
Yes, the controller is cool and inventive. This should factor into reviews, but I don't think it accounts for the review score differences we're seeing.
I know some people will say the usual stuff: "reviews are subjective, scores don't matter, how can you say anything when you haven't played either console yet?" etc. My view it that any hardware review for a console at release should be about the hardware. Well we all know about the hardware at this point, and one is objectively, measurably superior for the same price. If your review says that one box launched with more/better games, that's not really a hardware review and should instead be an article about which console has the better launch lineup. The idea you can award a "90" to one console for having exclusives at launch is idiotic because in three months, that number will be utterly meaningless. These launch scores should all be for just the hardware, or should explicitly be rating the console's launch and say that in the title.
I'm annoyed that reviewers aren't knocking Sony in the area that they deserved to be knocked this generation. They made a bigger, weaker box with worse backwards compatibility. Whether or not they release with more exclusives, or if people expect it to have more/better exclusives over time, the console hardware at release is inferior to the competition. I think a lot of reviewers are probably being swayed by their affection for PlayStation and Microsoft's disastrous 8th gen.
Xbox deserved praise for releasing better hardware this generation, but they deserve criticism for their woeful launch lineup. PS5 deserves praise for its launch lineup, but the hardware deserves criticism. Lumping all this together into "hardware" reviews that will never be updated is misleading. I want Xbox to do well this generation so that Sony doesn't rest on their laurels and continues to push. Awarding them higher scores for worse hardware is not helping.
Edit: A lot of people are saying that games are what matters, and I understand that. But the hardware and OS capabilities of the Series X are the place Microsoft actually deserves credit this generation and Sony deserves criticism. Especially when so much of what people play on consoles is multi-platform anyway, brushing off the power difference is very disingenuous. This is the time to write about all the boring tech stuff so that game reviews are only about the games.

I finally decided to buy a Nintendo Switch. I'm a long time PC and Playstation gamer, but nintendo consoles were never popular or even known in Ukraine where I'm from. The only "Nintendo-related" console I've ever had/used was Dendy which was a very popular in many post-USSR countries copy of NES. And at least thanks to that copy I have wonderful memories of playing Super Mario Bros when I was a kid. But unfortunately, Nintendo still isn't fully present in Ukraine even now. It's easy to buy a Switch here and physical version of games for it, but there's no Ukrainian e-shop. Well at least I can use the Polish one.
At first I was sceptical of the idea of buying a Switch. I've been an avid gamer for a long time, but the last couple of years I wasn't too enthusiastic about video games. I've played many of new releases available on PC and PS4-5, but I couldn't complete most of them and often I had to literally make myself play. So I was a bit afraid that I'll just waste my money, play with my new console for a few days and never touch it again. And boy was I wrong!!! Switch is an amazing console. Handheld mode is game changing (duh you may say, but for me it's also my very first handheld console). The exclusive games are mind blowingly fun and addictive. I started with The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and now it's one of my favorite games of all time (I plan on sharing more of my thoughts about Zelda on its subreddit). I also played around a bit with Mario Odyssey and both I and my girlfriend loved playing Nintendo Swith Sports together. I haven't played this much in years and it's really refreshing. Lately I've started thinking that I'm just getting "old" and the problem is solely mine, that's it has nothing to do with the modern game design, but Nintendo proved me wrong. Their games make me feel things about video games I haven't felt since probably the start of the last decade. And the world of Nintendo games I've discovered gives me a lot to play and catch up, though it does feel a bit daunting lol, due to the sheer amount of awesome Zelda/Mario/Metroid/etc games I wanna play through now.
