It’s an unpopular choice here because most folks on this sub are waiting on external milestones to happen and it’s not really the partner directly that’s holding up the TL, but I ultimately drew my line in the sand. We start trying EOY or I’m moving on. Gives me time to heal and start over. He knows and got on board. It took a lot of difficult but honest conversations to get there.

It’s not the exciting fairytale so many people here get. It’s not at all ideal. But I can’t be so overly supportive and considerate at the expense of my own happiness.

Like there's this very prevalent American logic that there's not enough to go around. So you get these pseudo-clever gotcha scenarios like "Well why not stop there? Exactly, over budget = we don't have the $ to allocate to this. That's not what I'm getting from OP. I was in a similar position recently but thankfully the sellers budged. We were prepared to walk regardless of our feelings because we truly weren't going to spend the extra 2% the sellers wanted.

We make about $200k annually and our mortgage is 40%. It’s the lifestyle creep that caught our asses at some point. All cleaned up now but that money easily gets rerouted to improvements and fixes for that nice big new home. Also depends on what you think is a good savings rate (especially if you have entrepreneurial ideas or early retirement goals).

Oh, and we don’t even have kids yet.

Seriously, we just moved into a home built in 1989 with all original fixtures. Very elderly couple who sold it had not changed a thing since day 1 of them moving in. I'm talking same pink drapes, carpet in bathrooms, HVAC had never been cleaned.

We are remodeling the kitchen right now and the new drywall work happening right now smells like fresh heaven.

Nostalgia would be the primary driver behind me picking up the book and while I'm a reader, I don't know that I'd be driven strongly enough by that same nostalgia to get through this particular YA book.
