Antarctica is one of the last great wild places on Earth...
Nordenskjöld Glacier in South Georgia.
With towering icebergs, soaring albatross and dipping and diving penguins, there is nowhere else like it on the planet.
However, there is a supertrawler fleet, operating at the end of the Earth, targeting a surprising species.
Krill ship plowing through Antarctic ecosystem
Krill, the very foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem, upon which almost all Antarctic animals rely to survive, are being sucked out of the Southern Ocean.
In the summer of 22/23, the Bob Brown Foundation travelled to Antarctica with Sea Shepherd Global to document and expose the plunder of krill in the Southern Ocean.
What we witnessed were giant industrial vessels literally stealing krill out of the mouths of penguins and whales.
Trawling right through a group of over 100-200 fin whales.
The voyage allowed the BBF to investigate and trace how this keystone species ends up on Australian chemist and supermarket shelves around the country.
We have just released our brand new report, which is the culmination of these investigations, entitled Krilling Antarctica: Australian and New Zealands outsized role.
We think Australian and New Zealand consumers would be shocked to realise just how prevalent krill is in Australian products and on our shelves.
