Oh Glenn, won'tcha rock it like you used to?

Anyone who has read the early posts in this blog knows that the Misfits are one of my favorite bands to ever have recorded music. However, in 1983 this band rose from the ashes of the long defunct Misfits and I couldn't have been a happier little man. Now by default, Samhain is also one of my favorite bands too. To be honest, I became a little distant right when Danzig went solo and became a metal maniac.
Enjoy: Initium

Slant 6 / Christina Billotte

Click here for R. Kelly pee samples.
Produced by Ian Mackaye of Minor Threat/Fugazi fame, Slant 6 were a Washington DC band consisting of an all girl line up. The most notable of the trio would be Christina Billotte, who after the band broke up in 1995, went on to form Quix*O*Tic with her sister, Mira Billotte, who went on to form the "eerie pop" band White Magic. Christina also released a one off disc under the name
The Casual Dots, which by the way is totally good.
The music on this disc isn't groundbreaking, but it sure is a nice way to see the early days of a talented musician.
Enjoy: Inzombia and watch this video which somehow goes with this post.

Los Shakers! Los Shakers! Urugray?

I don't know much about this band, so in an effort to inform I present their Wiki page:Los Shakers were a popular rock band in 1960s and were a part of the Uruguayan Invasion. The band formed in 1963 in Montevideo, Uruguay. They were modeled after The Beatles and even adopted similar haircuts and clothing. The band sang many songs in English, despite their location, and gained their greatest popularity in Argentina. They issued their first single, "Break It All," in 1965.

Between 1964-66, this quartet, not trio as many would believe, were pretty much household names. These little girls from Queens, NY were at the forefront of the burgeoning female Rock and Roll scene. Of course, like all good things, it pretty much came to a crashing end by 1966 due to this fickle world and its short attention span.
The girls failed to do well commercially for the Red Bird label and were subsequently dropped. They then made the jump to Mercury records and were largely ignored by the label bosses. Without any hits the group broke up shortly after. It isn't surprising that the girls were broke, even if they did have a short string of hits under their collective belts. The group was tied up with litigation over their royalty checks among other things.

Elvis Perkins: Too cool.

I was first introduced to Elvis Perkins by accident. It was sometime last year when I accepted an invitation to see the worst band ever: "Clap Your Hands say poo"
Anyway, Perkins was the opener. It was interesting the way he held court over the room full of Los Angeles hipsters. A few, including myself were into his performance, but there was a large amount of people in the room who you could tell were way too bored and couldn't wait for the headliner to start. Sucks for them, right?
When the show was over my brother took me to the merchandise table and bought me this album. Clap your annoyance had just finished their set and the place started clearing out. My group hung around smoking cigarettes outside the place for a while, just bullshittin' and off to the side of the place just standing around was Elvis Perkins. With the freshly purchased vinyl in hand I walked over to give him props for putting on a great show, but before I could open my mouth, he looked at his buddy and says "Looks like he wants an autograph."
It wasn't what he said, but how he said it. I looked at him with disappointment and said "Keep your pen in your pocket...just wanted to tell you, great show." It was obvious that it was an awkward moment for the both of us.
Enjoy: Ash Wednesday.

Father's Day is almost here...
Normally I wouldn't give a damn about that holiday, but it finally happened. After two years of sex. Yes, sex...because we were trying to make babies, of course. We became pregnant. Fast forward some months later, two little girls were released from the puffy gut of Wife-Bot!
On June 1st, 2008 we welcomed Scarlett Lee and Stella Marie into Los Angeles. Eight days later, our home is now a sterile environment. There will now be nary a shoe to walk across our floors to leave a dusty lane, no more will the sweet scent of certain things fill the evening air. No.
This has been replaced with the soft smells of baby powder, baby wipes, baby lotion, and poopie. To be perfectly honest, I couldn't be happier about it. Well, I do wish I could let loose on a bottle of Gin.

Led by Andy Cabic, this San Franciscan group has long been making their mark all over the world with their simple, yet stunningly deep mixture of rural folk, psychedelia, and straight forward musicianship. They count the face of the freak folk movement (I hate that stupid term), Devendra Banhart as a member. I've been a longtime fan and I've never heard these guys drop the ball once!
This could quite possibly be the finest record to lock yourself away in a snow covered Vermont cabin while writing your memoirs...just before you're killed by a hungry bear. Enjoy "To find me gone."

After leaving Belle and Sebastian because her romance with front man Stuart Murdoch came to a crashing end, Ms. Campbell started a new band. They called themselves the Gentle Waves. This album, The green fields of foreverland, was their first. Not straying far from the sound that her prior band released, the album is warm with lush arrangements and sweet jangly guitars. There's no way one could find this a bad listen.

We all need Finishing School
Click here to bring those ferns back to life.
Link to be redone.
The Finishing School is a side project by Sasha Bell who otherwise would be putting in duties with Elephant 6 stalwarts The Essex Green & The Ladybug Transistor. This album, Destination girl is more of the same vibe you're familiar with from the aforementioned bands. This isn't a problem for me because I've always been a sucker for her vocals. This record feels simultaneously modern and "1960's hippies in the forest-esque." This is music for the cute girl with glasses to write in her journal to. Which is good...especially if that girl is writing about you.
