The Phantom Four "Madhur" 2006

This is the first formal release from the Phantom Four, and it is a superb set of mysterious and emotional songs based in surf and the Middle East. Trad fans may find too much to chew on here, but if you are adventurous at all, or a fan of the Treble Spankers or the Madeira, this will surely please you. - Phil Dirt at Reverb Central
Who are they? Anyone who had the same good fortune as we at HangNine did and managed to see The Treble Spankers will know what a great band they were and what a great guitarist was Phantom Frank; indeed, in terms of tone, I thought that they were the best sounding instrumental band I had seen at the time. Sadly the Treble Spankers had to call a halt to proceedings in 1997, due to Phantom Frank's troubles with RSI (an occupational hazard for frantic double-picking guitarists). But, hallelujah, Phantom Frank is back and his new band, The Phantom Four, are as great as you will remember The Treble Spankers being. Frank handles both guitar and sitar duties and is joined by Marnix Krabbendam on guitar, Marc de Regt on bass and Niels Jansen on drums.
What's good? Fabulous Arabic/North African-influenced tunes. Phantom Frank is back and this time he uses a sitar as well! Beautiful, desert landscape photographs on the CD cover.
What's bad? The Phantom Four are from the Netherlands. No bad thing in itself, but I see no sign of any UK gigs in the near future: this is a very bad thing. - Jon Deadman

Roger McGuinn & Band "Roger McGuinn & Band" 1975

In the liner notes to Sundazed's reissue of Roger McGuinn & Band, the former Byrds leader says, "A band should be a benevolent dictatorship," adding, "Democracy is a great form of government, but it doesn't work in rock & roll."..
...Whether you agree with that statement or not, Roger McGuinn & Band is one album that supports McGuinn's argument pretty well; in 1975, after his first two solo albums were greeted with lackluster commercial and critical response, Columbia Records assigned producer John Boylan to McGuinn's next project, and Boylan brought along a band. While the players turned out to be a solid rhythm section who brought a tight, energetic groove to the sessions, McGuinn decided to let them contribute songs to the album in the name of esprit de corps, and let the record show that none of these guys had ever written a great song for one of America's benchmark rock bands. Consequently, Roger McGuinn & Band is knee-deep in filler, though not all the blame can be pointed at Roger's bandmates, since "Easy Does It" and "Lisa" don't exactly loom large in his catalog. And while Boylan's production isn't especially intrusive, the results have a bit more gloss than this music needs, and the country-rock and boogie accents don't leave much room for the folk touches that have always been McGuinn's strong suit. Still, "Born to Rock and Roll" and "Lover of the Bayou" are solid McGuinn compositions that deserve wider circulation, and while this isn't one of his better albums, at least it finds him in sharp and passionate form with a good band behind him. He just shouldn't have let them write half of the album, that's all. - Review by Mark Deming

The Clash "London Calling" 1979

Give 'Em Enough Rope, for all of its many attributes, was essentially a holding pattern for the Clash, but the double-album London Calling is a remarkable leap forward, incorporating the punk aesthetic into rock & roll mythology and roots music...
...Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs -- particularly "London Calling," "Spanish Bombs," and "The Guns of Brixton" -- are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote "The Guns of Brixton") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it's rockabilly greasers or "Stagger Lee," as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The Animals 1963 + The Yardbirds "Rock Generation" 1964 Vol 1

This series is a kind of sound-chronicle of what happened in England between 1962-1967. It is not a complete history - some of the artists were, and are, inaccessible. It contains a fair amount, however, of what was (and is) relevant. Some of the artists performing here - then unknown - are now Rock Superstars, some are dead, and some have fallen by the wayside.
But all of them contributed their fair share to a musical revolution whose effects will be felt for a long time yet...
...I had the good fortune (and good judgement - if you pardon my vanity) to be around at the time and it became my vocation against all kinds of odds to make some of these events possible. Even though others may have later cashed in on it, I am glad that it was within my means to nurture the movement. Happenings like these only occur once or twice in a generation. The technical quality of some of the recordings is far from satisfactory. Many of them were improvised on the spot without rehearsals or grandiose equipment.
I hope that the authenticity of some glorious musical - and human - moments well compensates for the lack of polish. Anyway, music is made by people for people, and no-one is perfect. - GIORGIO GOMELSKY

Adam & The Ants "Kings Of The Wild Frontier" 1980

Hooking up with Malcolm McLaren was a pivotal moment for Adam Ant, since the manager not only introduced Ant to the thundering, infectious Burundi drum beat that became his signature, he stole his band, too...
...Adam and the rest of the Ants had just worked up how to exploit the Burundi style when McLaren pirated the boys off to support Annabella Lwin in Bow Wow Wow -- using the very same sound they had developed with Adam Ant. It was now a race to get that sound into the stores first, and Adam lucked out when he joined forces with guitarist Marco Pirroni, who quickly proved to be invaluable. Ant and Pirroni knocked out a bunch of songs that retained some of the dark artiness of Dirk Wears White Sox, largely anchored by those enormous Burundi beats and given great, irresistible pop hooks -- plus a flash sense of style, as the new Ants dressed up in something that looked like American Indians with a velveteen touch of a dandy fop. It was a brilliant, gonzo move -- something that quickly overshadowed Bow Wow Wow -- and the resulting record, Kings of the Wild Frontier, is one of the great defining albums of its time. There's simply nothing else like it, nothing else that has the same bravado, the same swagger, the same gleeful self-aggrandizement and sense of camp. This walked a brilliant line between campiness and art-house chutzpah, and it arrived at precisely the right time -- at the forefront of new wave, so Adam & the Ants exploded into the British popular consciousness. If image was all that they had, they would've remained a fad, but Kings of the Wild Frontier remains a terrific album because it not only has some tremendous songs -- the title track and "Antmusic" are classic hits, while "Killer in the Home" and "Physical (You're So)" are every bit their equal -- but because it fearlessly, imperceptibly switches gears between giddy and ominous, providing nothing short of a thrill ride in its 13 songs. The Vietnam Veterans are a french band, that first started playing in 1982. They play a very unique and fantastic psychedelic music style, there is no other band like this!'Souls must have been sold for a performance like this', Bucketfull Of Brains once wrote about 'Green Peas'. We just like to let you know, that this group was one of the most promising psychedelic groups of the 80's worldwide.

DOGS "Walking Shadows" 1980

Described as The Flaming Groovies meets The Stooges in a Paris bar in the 70s.
It was a brief set of six or seven gigs in New England and New York, supporting Rick Blaze and The Ballbusters – a good enough band on their own, but certainly nothing even remotely comparable to the stature and influence of Dominique’s group. Yet he was delighted with the chance to go and probably never even considered where his band should be positioned on the bill. He was going to play America, and that was good enough for him.
French friends who know something of the situation say that Dominique had lung cancer and may have known that his time was limited. The pneumonia was probably a side affect, but when you have pneumonia, undertaking a rock and roll tour is not something you do lightly. He must have known the risk, but went anyway. The itinerary called for two shows in Worcester, and single shows in Fitchburg, New York, Boston and Portland, Maine, but Dominique only got as far as to sing the Legendary Lovers track "If You Don’t Want Me No More" at the first Worcester show. He made an attempt at a second song but had to leave it to his band mates to finish without him. After that hewent to the hospital, and he never came out again. A damn shame.

It’s a little eerie now listening to the lyrics of this song, "Satisfied", from the 1988 album A Million Ways of Killing Time. Lots of bands write lyrics like this, but in the case of the Dogs, it seemed quite a bit more believable. After all they started years ago in 1973, and when "Satisfied" was written it was about the half way point of the band. They’d never had any break through success, though they were widely acknowledged as THE band that showed the French that they could make rock music as vital as the best that appeared anywhere else. The USA had the Stooges and Ramones, the UK had the Pistols, Damned and Clash, Australia had Radio Birdman and the Saints. France had the Dogs, and they didn’t have to concede a thing.
...this was a guy who seems to have managed to time his own death as the perfect ending to his rock’n’roll life…

The Dave Brubeck Quartet "Time Out" 1959

Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time...
...It was a risky move -- Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt -- it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as its become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. Surf music is a subgenre of popular music created in Southern California between the late 1950s and the mid-1960s, with deep roots in the emerging surf culture...
...From a strictly musical perspective, surf music is characterized by surf-related lyrics, high harmony vocals, catchy and earworm-y guitar solos and riffs, and high reverberation levels. Traditionally, surf music has always had a successful and relatively influential instrumental and rock and roll side. Still, dream pop and melodic singing generally found more followers and results in the charts.
"I think Dick Dale is the first one to start blowing up expectations about what surf music is with his arrangement of 'Misirlou,'" surf music guitarist Jason Loughlin tells SurferToday.

The Eagles "Desperado" 1973

If Don Henley was the sole member of the Eagles underrepresented on their debut album, Eagles, with only two lead vocals and one co-songwriting credit, he made up for it on their follow-up, the "concept" album Desperado...
...The concept had to do with Old West outlaws, but it had no specific narrative. On Eagles, the group had already begun to marry itself to a Southwest sound and lyrical references, from the Indian-style introduction of "Witchy Woman" to the Winslow, AZ, address in "Take It Easy." All of this became more overt on Desperado, and it may be that Henley, who hailed from Northeast Texas, had the greatest affinity for the subject matter. In any case, he had co-writing credits on eight of the 11 selections and sang such key tracks as "Doolin-Dalton" and the title song. What would become recognizable as Henley's lyrical touch was apparent on those songs, which bore a serious, world-weary tone. Henley had begun co-writing with Glenn Frey, and they contributed the album's strongest material, which included the first single, "Tequila Sunrise," and "Desperado" (strangely never released as a single). But where Eagles seemed deliberately to balance the band's many musical styles and the talents of the band's members, Desperado, despite its overarching theme, often seemed a collection of disparate tracks -- "Out of Control" was a raucous rocker, while "Desperado" was a painfully slow ballad backed by strings -- with other bandmembers' contributions tacked on rather than integrated. Randy Meisner was down to two co-writing credits and one lead vocal ("Certain Kind of Fool"), while Bernie Leadon's two songs, "Twenty-One" and "Bitter Creek," seemed to come from a different record entirely. The result was an album that was simultaneously more ambitious and serious-minded than its predecessor and also slighter and less consistent. - Review by William Ruhlmann

Adam & The Ants "Dirk Wears White Sox" 1979

The original Ants lineup released only one LP, Dirk Wears White Sox for Do It in 1979...
...The album finds a young Adam Ant exploring the sometimes-awkward fusion of punk, glam, and minimalist post-punk with bizarre images and disturbing tales of alienation, sex, and brutality. And while the somewhat pretentious, overly arty lyrics and inexperienced playing are a drawback, the album offers a fascinating look at the Ants' formative years, capturing a raw energy that would be sacrificed for more polish on subsequent releases. [At the height of Antmania, Adam acquired the rights to the album, remixing it, dropping a few tracks, and adding a couple of early tracks for reissue in 1983 with a different cover for Epic. In 1995, Sony Music U.K. released a hybrid version for CD, restoring the cover art, original mixes, and the previously dropped tracks but retaining the additions and running order of the reissue. Epic chose to keep the remixed version for CD release in the U.S.]

Pink Fairies "Pink Fairies" 1975

Pink Fairies are an English rock band initially active in the London (Ladbroke Grove) underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s...
...They promoted free music, drug use, and anarchy, and often performed impromptu gigs and other stunts, such as playing for nothing outside the gates at the Bath and Isle of Wight pop festivals in 1970, as well as appearing at Phun City, the first Glastonbury and many other free festivals including Windsor and Trentishoe.

DOGS "Different" 1979

Ignored for a long time in the past, the French punk music is now the subject of books and CD compilations. Legendary names are now combined with new releases of old pieces. Very influenced by the evolution of the American and British scenes, musicians meet in the clubs and music stores of major French cities...
...This group from Rouen claimed their rock and roll attitude. Very influenced by The Stooges, their lyrics were mostly in English. Philips released their first album Different in 1979. Their taste for violent music could really be heard on their second release Walking Shadows (1980). Too much glass for the neighbourhood was released in 1982 (Epic), followed by Legendary lovers in 1983 (by the producer of Dr Feelgood, Vic Maile). The albums Shout and More more more marked the decline of the group.
This was the best album by the french dogs. they had that pub rock sound as well as a little electronic to it. they remind me of the stinky toys a bit but not as punky. i have not heard this in many years and it is so great. this was one of the best pub, punk bands to come out of france in the late 70s. - Submitted by SAXONMAN in long island new york
French rock & roll is usually heaped with ridicule, deservedly so for the most part. There are exceptions of course like Jacques Dutronc and Plastic Bertrand's "Ça Plane Pour Moi." Add to that list the tough and melodic post-punk/new wave/power pop group the Dogs. Their debut record from 1979, Different, is a little gem of a record full of spiky guitars, frantic tempos, and solid songcraft. The disc sounds like a lost Only Ones record; singer Dominique Laboubee has a world weariness in both his voice and his lyrics similar to that of Peter Perrett. At the band's best, on tracks like "Stranger Than Me," "A Different Me," the aching ballad "The Greatest Gift," and the Buddy Holly-esque "(I'm Gonna Learn To) Live With It," they almost reach the heady level of the Only Ones or the Real Kids. The only thing holding them back is too much restraint and cleanliness in the production of the record. Still the record deserves to be heard by fans of classic post-punk songcraft and power pop hooks. It's a perfect rejoinder to anyone who says the French can't rock. [The album was reissued in 2003 with a raft of bonus tracks, including three songs from their 1977 Charlie Was a Good Boy single and five tracks from the 1978 EP Go Where You Wanna Go. The songs from 1977 lack the studio polish of the album and are really good, especially the pounding "19." The EP tracks are closer in sound to the album but possess a touch more energy and verve; the songs are on par as well. "Go Where You Want to Go" is a stately rocker that calls to mind mid-period Flamin' Groovies and features some of the band's best guitar work. "You're Gonna Loose Me" sounds like a lost Heartbreakers song with some very Thunders-like guitar. These tracks are a perfect addition to an already great album.] AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra
