Geologist ape here. Keep an eye on companies exploring for gold hydrogen (newly coined term referring to pure hydrogen gas that forms naturally in the ground and can be drilled and produced like you would an oil well, sometimes referee to as native hydrogen or geologic hydrogen). The proof of concept is the Hydroma field in Mali, and there was recently an economic discovery in Nebraska. Potentially a lot of oil companies will transition to hydrocarbon exploration as the process for how it forms and naturally accumulates become more understood. I know TOTAL (French oil giant) had a lab working on gold hydrogen and at a gold hydrogen conference this summer I saw a researcher from Chevron actively participating. The company that made the discovery in Nebraska is currently private right now. Gold hydrogen is really the superior form of green hydrogen as it doesn’t require expensive hydrolysis and finding a green source of power. It is potentially a pervasive resource, it has been poorly documented because historically the only people drilling deep wells (oil companies) are doing it in sedimentary basins (where oil forms) hydrogen on the other hand forms directly out of the earth and doesn’t have a biological origin like oil. It’s found is basement rocks that are typically devoid of oil and therefore no one drills them.
