Country Overview

On the Black Sea and bordered by Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, Georgia is a key U.S. ally in the South Caucasus region and a transit corridor for energy resources from the Caspian Sea to Europe and beyond. USAID partners with Georgia’s government and people to strengthen democratic institutions, catalyze economic growth, and promote the rule of law while helping Georgia build resilience against malign Kremlin influence and advance its Euro-Atlantic integration.

USAID began operating in Georgia in 1992. Over the past three decades, the American people through USAID have provided approximately $1.9 billion in assistance to Georgia to improve the country’s security and prosperity. Currently, USAID invests in 39 development programs with a total value of approximately $373 million, and an annual budget of more than $70 million. Current USAID programs focus on: facilitating economic reforms as well as private sector investment and job creation in industries with high growth potential; strengthening democratic institutions to better respond to citizen needs; helping more Georgians, including members of ethnic minority communities, participate in democratic processes and civic activities; diversifying energy sources to promote green energy and reduce dependence on imports from authoritarian states; building resilience against disinformation narratives; and improving education and professional skills training systems to prepare Georgian students and workers to succeed, among other areas. These development goals are especially important as Georgia continues to integrate with the European Union in accordance with the Association Agreement signed in 2014.
