RAILROAD JERK One Track Mind 1995

Discogs

Over the span of ten years, Railroad Jerk - the celebrated, premiere, industrial-folk, junkyard blues, rock band of the 90's - made four full-length LPs for the independent label Matador and toured the world. Beginning with "Railroad Jerk" (1990) and "Raise the Plow" (1992) the quartet defined the blues-punk sound of the era. Although never achieving the kind of mainstream recognition enjoyed by other bands of the time, Railroad Jerk was an influential force in what became known as "alternative rock." With the release of "One Track Mind" (1994) and the legendary line-up now in place, Railroad Jerk reached its biggest success. Drummer Dave Varenka, guitarist Alec Stephen, bassist Tony Lee, and guitarist/vocalist Marcellus Hall brought the RRJ sound across America and to Europe and Japan.

Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny

National Chain White Hassle was a primitive folk/blues side project of vocalist/guitarist Marcellus Hall and vocalist/pots 'n' pans player Dave Varenka, both better known as members of the alternative rock unit Railroad Jerk. After performing a handful of live dates opening for acts including Skeleton Key and Cat Power, White Hassle issued their 1997 debut National Chain, a collection of their own original junkyard ballads mixed with covers of songs by Hank Williams, George Jones and Ray Charles.

Biography

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Railroad Jerk skewer blues, country, rock, and noise into a messy, bohemian post-punk celebration of roots rock. Formed in 1989 by guitarist/vocalist Marcellus Hall and bassist/vocalist Tony Lee in Trenton, NJ, the duo added drummer Jez Aspinall and guitarist Chris Muller by early 1990; the group recorded their self-titled debut for Matador Records in 1990. After its release, Aspinall left the band and was replaced by Steve Cercio; Muller was kicked out of the band and replaced by Alec Stephen. The quartet released their acclaimed second album, Raise the Plow, in 1993; after its release, Cercio left the band and was replaced by Dave Varenka. Railroad Jerk released its third album -- its most highly-praised yet -- in spring of 1995. Third Rail, the group's fourth album, also received positive reviews upon its fall 1996 release.
