Tucker Carlson to host show on Twitter after being fired from Fox News by macula8 in news

Twitter's video system is pretty awful. I don't see this going well.

Or a talking head on Fox News (if they decide to tack to the center a small bit after the recent Dominion settlement and Carlson fiasco).

I'd add that he may be pretty high on the narcissistic spectrum and likely feeds off both attention and the ability to manipulate/exploit people. He's not doing it for the money, he's doing it for the supply.

How do you figure?

I'm speaking in generalities, and with a bias toward North America. This paper and this graphic in particular (note: a vs. b, or a vs c) visualized how climate zones may change. It may help to cross reference with the climate codes. Obviously, things like ocean currents and altitude make a latitude-based rule of thumb rather naive, but if the earth was smooth and uniform and a frictionless vacuum... yada yada.

It's just as likely to produce extreme weather.

Yes. I am not trying to suggest otherwise. I suspect most of the temperate zones are going to get chaotic. The part that scares me the most is the wet bulb temperature. Tennessee might become more like Florida is now, which is livable. But maybe there are some weeks in the year that become almost unlivable. Then imagine what places like Guatemala or regions of India might become? Millions and maybe billions of people will become refugees. Rough winters, occasional wind storms, and racists might be preferable to a tropical steam cooker.

More racists up here than down there.

I believe that. Iowa kept electing avowed racist and neo-nazi sympathizer Steve King. WTF.

No arguments from me. Generally though, north is likely better than south in a longer time horizon. Maybe Iowa is forever fucked for myriad other reasons. Maybe Minnesota or Wisconsin are better options in 2050. 🤷

Well, cancer and the political hellscape that is most of rural America doesn't really factor into climate models. Basically, everywhere is fixin' to get a lot weirder, unstable, and more extreme. So the "winners" might just be the places that are the least terrible, but also can still reliably grow food crops.

When the bubble bursts, it will probably not be uniform across all of higher ed. Public state universities, are (I think) most likely to survive intact. It's going to be the marginal and smaller private schools that will take the biggest hits.

The whole thing is disingenuous: it's only moderate in tone, not in the types of political attitudes it permits and amplifies. It's actually heavily populated by far right and fascist apologists and trolls who use it as a platform to launder their radical talking points and fine-tune their rhetoric to be more palatable. There are also a cadre of normal people who (god bless them) push back on the most extreme sentiments, but many (most?) eventually get banned if they push back too assertively.

We lack full context, but it's worth noting that a conversation shouldn't rely on one person's charismatic ability alone. Both participants can/should be engaged in the process. A "boring" question or lull could provide valuable signals that the other person is not that into you, is passive, preoccupied, or doesn't bring much to the table.

What is the best local place to eat in Knoxville, TN? by krnranger in Knoxville

[–]veringer 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Without question, you should go to Kaizen. If you have to wait for a table, or just want to grab a beer first, pop over to Pretentious Beer Company and have a pint and see their glass blowing operation. If you prefer mixed drinks, go around the corner to Brother Wolf. If you prefer whiskey and a Scottish Pub atmosphere, hop in Jig & Reel.

What happened to Buzzed Bull Creamery in UT Strip? by Jonasan999 in Knoxville

[–]veringer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at where it is/was. It's bland, homogenized, and forgettable. At best it's a liminal stretch of sidewalk between other places you'd rather be. James Kunstler puts it succinctly: "These are places that are not worth caring about" (really should watch the whole thing, if you've not seen before). Perhaps that might change as the business and architectural ecosystem evolves in that area. At the moment though, Cumberland is grappling with a deep and dedicated drive-thru culture pressed into pedestrian-forward infrastructural mold. How successful is a walk-up restaurant going to be when it's adjacent to a drive-through Zaxby's, a drive-thru Starbucks, a Shell gas station, and attached to a Soviet era looking dismal gray apartment building?

At some point the desperate yet capable are going to stage a (possibly suicidal) revolution and we'll see progress or a Tienamen Square style bloodbath. I feel like the "Bonus Army" was almost there, but there was too much slack in the rope.

Steeplechase Apts. Nearly 70% rent increase. Insane. by arrowbeeonxbl in Knoxville

Not remotely the same as today.

That was sorta the gist of my initial commentary. 13 years is not that long, considering the length of most mortgages. A lot has changed (not for the better, probably).

The math checks out. But, IIRC, we bought in October of '09, so more like 13 years and change.

Has anyone seen this fine, mentally stable, gentleman in and around town? by Moneyshot06 in Knoxville

[–]veringer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, yes. It's their saliva. They lick themselves, then it dries, then it atomizes into dust, which lands on everything--eventually making its way into my lungs, eyes, and sinuses. The real hypoallergenic cat (for most allergy sufferers) would be one that doesn't lick itself or anything else.
