We've Done It! Ledger Delays Recover Service! Did The Community Win? by Johnny-Joseph in ledgerwallet

It's not like many of your security assumptions changed. They just bought something that isn't at the center of a shitstorm, not something that's immune to this exact problem.

The risk is pretty much the same, no matter what non-shitstormed competitor you chose.

This is the only option to regain trust. Everything must be open sourced and it should at the very least be possible for advanced users to take source code for the firmware they trust on GitHub and be able to upload/flash it onto the device. The flashing software also needs to be open source. Basically so that we know exactly what we are putting onto our devices and what code actually runs. This restores trust and is basically the only good option for Ledger. It's 2023, we should push for more open source software, especially in this important case. Ledger hw wallets are way too critical to not have completely open source firmware that users can update themselves. There definitely are safe ways to implement this idea while minimizing the risk of users falling into the trap of malicious firmware that scammers published.

Is 1.8TB normal for validator use today? 2TB "range anxiety" by Ystebad in ethstaker

[–]TheTrueBlueTJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why couldn't you just resell the 2TB drive (after doing your best to completely format it of course)? That would already recoup some of the costs of a 4TB drive. Also with the cloner you'd have to buy another 4TB drive as the actual backup device. But I'm wondering if this is needed at all. Like if your 4TB dies one day and you lose all your data for your validator, don't you still own the keys to set the "validator software components" up again from a fresh start? The penalty for being offline for a few days is no big deal. Of course a backup is always good. But you might as well go with a different backup strategy where every so often you back up your 4TB SSD to a 4TB+ HDD that is not nearly as expensive. The first backup might take quite long, but subsequent backups would only have to change files that have actually changed. That's just in theory when I think about software like Timeshift.

There is a much wider point to be made here. Who are we to say that most animals today are incapable of consciousness? We don't know for 100% sure what is going on in their minds and how they come to their own conclusions. So who are we to say they don't?
