Greg Cartwright and TGL.

Last year the ever prolific Greg Cartwright released a live album at a little bar in Milwaukee entitled Greg Cartwright live at the Circle A. While it didn't blow me away, it was still cool to hear him in such an intimate setting. The high point however is the crowd itself... he must have been pumped to have such a group of people sitting cross legged at his feet.

Anyway, this is the 7 inch that came with that album as a nice little bonus. It features three songs which are cool takes on early Compulsive Gamblers, Oblivians, and his solo tunes. He's backed by The Goodnight Loving who I am not a fan of, but can still admit that they did a fine job at backing a legend.

Reigning Sound and Mary Weiss

At one point in her career she was the main mouth for the Shangri-La's, but then she spent many a quiet year inventing new styles of hand to hand combat that she would eventually teach to armies all around the world. Don't worry your pretty little face... she only schooled the good guys.

Anyway, after she grew tired of perfecting her "3 million ways to kill a person" manual, she had a beer with Greg Cartwright of the Reigning Sound. This album is what they came up with the next morning.*

*I also have a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell if you're interested.

The Horrors - Vent

Click here or the hostage gets it!

Not to be confused with Faris Tombstone or whatever those English Horror lads call themselves, these Horrors are from Iowa. What else comes from there?

Besides the state being a major force in the soybean industry, I couldn't find a lot. I'll have to visit. The only problem with that is that I take terrible notes when I'm drunk. Usually they start out informative, but they soon develop into crude drawings of naked women with pumpkins for hands and things of that nature. One time I was following someone who I thought was a local rapist. When I handed the notes to the cops they were excited that a citizen took such an acute attention to detail, but that all all changed when they realized the suspect was Caucasian, six foot tall, and was wearing the "strenuous costume of a shy zebra/ long pony hybrid"

Apparently I had begun writing a poem.

This album, produced by Memphis Garage legend Greg Cartwright, is not something that I'll keep on repeat, but I can promise you that no dirty old bar should be without a copy of this in their jukebox.

Compulsive Gamblers - Bluff City

Click here for KRS one hand soap

Well, would' ya look here... it's almost Christmas again. It's that special time of the year where all the little kids in the world are being extra good and practicin' their manners the best they can. It's a time where families come together... unless we're talking about my family. I haven't spoken to them in years. There are only a handful of us alive. It's alright though... we ain't got nothin' in common anyway.

Christmas is good. Don't forget that. I ain't forgettin' to be kind and giving to my digital kinfolk, that's for sure.

Please enjoy Bluff City because Greg Cartwright is a gift to music.

Another Greg Cartwright post. Hooray!

It's a well known fact that Greg Cartwright is my favorite musician. Tonight he brings it to ya like Elvis!! Watch out now!!

"Pretty baby" is a lonesome lady killer that I ripped off of the lone Greg Oblivian and The Tip Tops 7 inch that Sympathy put out years ago. I would've upped the B side too, but those songs are on the Head Shop album, which can be found somewhere around these parts... if you're looking right.

Next up we've got "I'll cry" b/w "Your love" These are different, more urgent versions than you're probably used to. Before you lay your head to bed tonight, make sure that you thank Slovenly Records for putting out this gem of a 45.

Lastly, but certainly not least...I lovingly deliver to you the very first Reigning Sound 7 inch, It's called Two sides to every man and has Mr. Oblivian putting his best Gene Clark forward on "Here without you." The B-side has the Cartwright original "West Texas Sound" and "Pretty Girl" which on the actual vinyl is credited as "Sha la la"

Here is the video shot by mtmillionaire. It's from the new album and it's called "If it's true"

For regular readers of this site, you know that Greg Cartwright is extremely well liked around these parts. I'm not alone in my admiration for the man, who it seems can do no wrong when it comes to Rock and Roll. Whenever folks are talking about garage rock somehow Mr. Cartwright's is mentioned. If by the small chance that you don't hear his name it's simply because whoever is doing the talking is probably a fan of the type of rock made by the Australian band; Jet. That's actually awful and I'm sorry that they have no awareness of one of rock's most talented dudes.

Years have passed and I still constantly listen to all the records this man is responsible for. From his work in the Oblivians all the way to The Mary Weiss album. Speaking of that record, I hear a lot of people weren't feeling it, including my wife. Sure that voice doesn't go down so easy all the time, but overall the sound it brings is pretty darn rad if you ask ol' Robot. Don't worry Mary...you can come by for dinner and we'll share a bowl.

Greg and the Reigning Sound haven't released anything in a while and I'm sure that he knows that there is a legion of people out there who are sadly weeping until some new product comes out. I just hope this wait means that the new record is going to floor anyone who hears it. Who am I kidding? Of course it will!

I have no idea when this radio show took place, but it's cool in the sense that now you can listen to a lot of the tunes that inspired him to create the ass kicking records he sells to us.

One of the many special treats on this set is the original "I want to be your happiness" by Nolan Strong. If you need a memory boost, Cartwright covered this track with the Compulsive Gamblers on Crystal gazing, Luck amazing.

Enjoy more than 50 songs on this sucker! A real gift to hold you over until the new album.

Reigning Sound indeed!

I don't remember where I actually got these from, but hopefully they're new to some of you. I really can't wait until they put the new album out. I swear, the stalker in me wants to fly out to Asheville, NC just to hang around suspiciously near a diner in hopes of coincidentally bumping into Greg Cartwright. If that happened I'd be like:

"Oh, excuse me. Hey...aren't you...Man, I'm sorry...what's your name? It's on the tip of my...wait! You're that guy from Reigning Sound??!? Yeah, man... do you live around here? My friend is a big fan so that's how I recognize you."

That scenario would be plausible until I began showing up everywhere he ever went.

Anyway, enjoy this semi-acoustic set from Thacker Mountain Radio. It's good.

The Reigning Sound reign supreme!

Click here to fend off electrocution.

Hey kids! I'm sure I don't need to mention that the robot is pretty friggin' tanked right about now, so there ain't gonna be no fancy written words going on here tonight. Nah, tonight I just want you to become a fan of the Reigning Sound courtesy of their appearance at Goner Records in Memphis. I post a lot of Greg Cartwright related stuff because I believe in saving rock and roll because after all...there are ONLY two kinds of music, right?

I'm pretty pissed that when I finally found the chance to get over there, they were closed. Here's an idea spawned out of neccessity...24 hour record stores for freaks like me that avoid the daylight like a vampire who wants to ask a chick to get married later that evening.

Get down to the wild sounds of The Oblivians because there's only two types of music:

Rock and Roll.

I picked up my motorcycle. It's a deep red 1977 Yamaha with gold trim.
Tonight I'm a little tipsy. I'm a light red with a smile you couldn't knock away with a crowbar.
Tonight I watched the Libertines DVD.

In short, tonight rocked!

So now I feeling like sharing the vibes with you guys.

Today I'd be obliged if you would take a listen to
Popular Favorites by The Oblivians.

PS. The new Reigning Sound album is coming out soon. Please nobody post it.
That's rock you oughta pay for because we need Greg to know we like what he's sellin'.

Beneath a Tennessee sky

"Been in Nashville for approximately one month. People are friendly, but it's not the old country paradise I was looking for. Maybe it's because I don't have cable and didn't realize the "new" country rules these parts, but what the hell happened to good ol' country and western?"

There's a bar down the lane with a poster in the window that says "Top 40 Night!"
That's a little dissappointing isn't it?
I met the old bass player for Johnny Cash. He was inducted into the hall of fame that night. He wore cool wallabees and dark jeans. He was over 70 years old.
I shook his hand and wondered if I'd break it beacuse it was so frail.

Enjoy the stuff that helps me get through the days...

Reigning Sound - Live at Maxwell's

Sorry about the small picture.....but the BIG picture I'm getting at is the genius of The Reigning Sound.
I know that this isn't the best album to start off with if you aren't already a devotee, but stop being a pussy.
Grab some booze, throw on yer shoes, and rock out!
