Zee Avi loves Patrick Keeler

I've been listening to this album for about a year now and I'm not sick of it at all. If you're into the sort of stuff that Cat Power makes, then this is for you. Wait... that is the laziest comparison I've ever made. I'm sorry.

I'm very particular about girls and acoustic guitars because for every one Julie Doiron there are one hundred and fifty nine million crappy broads who you'd bang if it wasn't for their crappy, corny tunes. Yes... I'm a god damned snob.

If you're confused about why I titled this post the way I did, I'll explain. Zee Avi owes her  current career to the keen ears of Patrick Keeler, drummer for the Greenhornes and that awful musical debacle; The Raconteurs. Apparently, he caught one of her youtube videos and was smitten enough to mention it to White Stripes manager; Ian Montone. Long story short: Lucky ladies make good records. Hey, there's even a cover of Morrissey's "First of the gang to die" here and it ain't bad.

I've heard "bitter heart" the last two times I went to Ikea. Speaking of that Swedish retailer, I'm kind of sick of people that hate on it. Where else am I going to get a great cutting board at such a low price? Jeez!

Julie Doiron is not a household name.

Canada may just be the one holding the title for being the homeland of a lot of great bands. Good for them! Thanks!

Julie Doiron, formerly of 90's band "Eric's Trip" is a Juno Award winning (Editor's note: Canada's version of the Grammy's) chanteuse that has a voice similar in sound to what you'd imagine a dramatic looking potted plant would sound like. You know the type...off in the corner of the room and giving off that "I'm trouble" vibe. Oh yeah.

If that description didn't sway you into becoming a fan of her, then I'll just say that she has a pretty and sometimes ethereal voice that goes really well against any instrument that accompanies it.

I first heard her on one of those CMJ samplers that used to be around. The song was called "dance music" and there's a video of it somewhere on this site. You should see it and I dare you to try and resist the temptation to clean your house. That shit's got pep!

Colin Meloy sings Sam Cooke

You got to love Colin Meloy. He has the craziest looking mouth ever. Not crazy looking like Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler...just crazy. I'm glad that he uses it for good and not evil that's for sure. If he used it for anything other than singing to his fans, we'd be in a heck of a lot of trouble. Think about that.

This tour goodie can be filed under his other CD only releases: Colin sings Morrissey and Colin sings Shirley Collins.

This time he's taking on the hot, buttered soul of Sam Cooke and it's done really well.

Reigning Sound indeed!

I don't remember where I actually got these from, but hopefully they're new to some of you. I really can't wait until they put the new album out. I swear, the stalker in me wants to fly out to Asheville, NC just to hang around suspiciously near a diner in hopes of coincidentally bumping into Greg Cartwright. If that happened I'd be like:

"Oh, excuse me. Hey...aren't you...Man, I'm sorry...what's your name? It's on the tip of my...wait! You're that guy from Reigning Sound??!? Yeah, man... do you live around here? My friend is a big fan so that's how I recognize you."

That scenario would be plausible until I began showing up everywhere he ever went.

Anyway, enjoy this semi-acoustic set from Thacker Mountain Radio. It's good.

Peter Doherty - Acoustic Lullaby

Click here for a little heartache.

Oh Pete, I remember you when you were a fresh faced young man who was just experimenting with illegal substances. We were having fun. Who would've thought you'd like them so much? Anyway pal, we're not mad at you. No sir. If you need to be high all of the time, then so be it. Just do us a favor...don't die. We still love you. Thanks.

PS. Stay away from Winehouse. It's just too much of a mind warping crack blast that occurs when the two of you occupy the same space. Our veins can't handle it. Plus, she makes you look fat.

Mr. David Viner's 2nd album.

Not long ago the stunning debut by England's David Viner was posted here and I'm sure it was enjoyed by many. Now I present to you "This boy don't care." An incredibly excellent follow up by a shamefully ignored musician.

I'm sure he's not sitting around like a slouch. Rumor has it that he's leaving an international trail of broken hearts behind him. I think he's probably drunk with whisky on his trousers somewhere in the world right now.

I hope he makes a new record soon.

Cat Power's Myra Lee

Cat Power has come quite a long way from the on stage vomiting and cut short performances.

I'm not sure if this was ever released on vinyl, but it's the one my record player has been longing for.

Does anyone know why there is an ink stamp of Hello Kitty on the back cover of her first 7 inch?

PS. If you use this link, mention this blog. Thanks!

Rose Melberg will cause nice dreams

Click the above link to speak to nature.

Admitedly, I'd never heard of Rose Melberg until one fateful night when I came across the wonderful site http://www.bradleysalmanac.com

Here I learned of one of the sweetest voices in twee/indie circles.

After that fateful night, I was devoted to Mrs. Melberg's soft songs and I went on a hunt to find more of these angelic sounds.

99% of the time, I download something and try hard to buy from the artist direct. In the case of Rose Melberg, I bought the limited vinyl release of "Cast away the clouds." (Only 450 copies worldwide)

Thanks to Bradleys Almanac I became musically smarter.

Visit his Boston based site and buy all Rose Melberg releases because she's not a stupid rock star. She's a normal gal...and that's a good thing.

Anyway, here she is live for your listening pleasure.

PS. If you use the link, mention Oh, robot. Thanks cutie!
