Here's a DFC player to test your memory cells - striker, Duncan McLeod. This cutting, dated Friday 14th January 1972, mentions the possibility of McLeod making his Dundee debut that Saturday as he was included in the pool to play Hearts at Tyncastle the next day.
It wasn't to be however, in fact McLeod only played one full game for the club and that was the following season when he took part in the Dees away game against Norwich in the Texaco Cup in September 72. So at the end of the day, there can't have been many Dee fans who actually saw him play for the dark blues!
Anyone go to Norwich?
Incidentally, the game at Tyncastle - we won it 5-2!
Dundee made the cover of Scorcher and Score in April 1972. The small inserts of info beside the drawings touch on subjects like the club's high profile transfers to teams down South, the 1910 Scottish Cup victory and the Dees performance in the 72 season. Click onto the cover if you want to read the large version.
The present team got penance - the past teams got pennants! This colourful little corner of the Dens boardroom goes back to the early 60's. I've managed to identify most of the teams on the pennants, so we have - Unione Sportiva Palermo (Italy) - Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) - Uhrik Truckers Philadelphia (USA) - SSV Reutlingen (Germany) - Arsenal - Club Deportivo Guadalajara (Mexico) - KR Reykyavik (Iceland) - Legia Warsaw (Poland) - FC Saarbrucken (Germany). Sitting on the sideboard along with the League Championship trophy are a Lisbon Lion, a photo of the 1962 champions team and a golden Portuguese Caravel in a glass case.
Here's another DFC Handbook, this time brought out for the 1982-83 season. The reason there are 3 "old" pictures on the cover is because all 3 died during the course of the previous season, and so this was a wee tribute. Top - Billy Steel, Bottom Left - Bert Juliussen, Bottom Right - Bob Shankly. The publication itself has the same kind of content as the other handbooks, club history, player profiles, quiz and so on.
This is the programme for Jim Duffy's Testimonial that took place on 6th December 1987 at Dens. It was actually supposed to be a game in aid of, what was thought at the time, the end of Jim's playing career after a horrendous knee injury against Rangers in September 87, but as everyone knows, he came bouncing back in 1990! Charlie Nicholas was in Dundee's team for this game, and in fact scored one of the goals which saw the Dee come out on top over a Premier League Select side. DFC winning 5-3 to be precise.
Another squad photo for the collection. This time from a 1975 Shoot magazine. It has quite a few reserve players in it alongside the more well known faces, although in the names listed, it has Ian Gordon when it should be Alan Gordon! Click on the image to view the large version.
Here's a cutting from a 1963 Sporting Post, featuring a young Arthur Montford discussing the top football story of the day, with guests - Davie Wilson & George McLean of Rangers and Dundee superstars, Alan Gilzean & Alec Hamilton. Thanks to NP.
On a recent trip to Prague, my brother spotted this Dundee FC Russian doll on display in a shop. He first took a picture of it on the shelf in the shop (top photo), then he decided to buy it and so brought it back with him. The other picture is it back home in Dundee, separated into it's segments, with the added bonus of there being different players names on their backs.
Those who made it to the Prague Doll Of Fame were - Antoine-Curier, Paton, McHale, Malone and McMenamin.
You will have spotted the scarf the Major was wearing in the DJ photo a few posts ago. Well here is that very one, in all it's 70's glory! You can click the image to enlarge it if you want to zoom in to view the period patches. The scarf on the right is a genuine original from the 60's, and has to be my all time favourite. An iconic classic! Big THANKS to Jock.
In his DFC debut season of 1969/70, Gordon Wallace made the cover of UK football magazine, Shoot. The date of the mag is 23rd May 1970, and shows him doing battle with Dunfermline's Doug Bailee. The game itself was played at Dens on 8th November 1969 and was a 1-1 draw. No prizes for guessing who scored... yep, our star man, GW.
The word silverware is usually mentioned when a team wins a trophy, however on this occasion, Dundee ended up with a piece of crystalware for the display cabinet. It was a one-off prize to mark the centenary of the Scottish Football League, in 1990.
The game against Ayr Utd finished 3-2 to the Dee, after extra time.
No need for me to give you the lowdown on the match, as you can read about it yourself in the cutting.
And you can click the link here to view the game -
Don't know who decided to do the cover pink but anyway, this handbook was brought out for the 1983/84 season. Not a particularly good year, finishing 8th and just avoiding relegation, although we did manage to reach the Scottish Cup semi's. Some of the content includes - DFC's history - a word from chairman, Ian Gellatly - photo of new manager, Archie Knox - a few player profiles - quiz - action shots - squad picture - 82/83 results and 83/84 fixture list.
A game I was at, and a belter too! Although Dundee were 3-0 down from the 1st leg at the San Siro and this return match seemed like mission impossible, it being AC Milan we were playing and the UEFA Cup, made for a great atmosphere at Dens. I was 13 and remember watching their star player,Rivera, the year before on the telly in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The star of this show though, wasn't from Milan, but was the Dee's Duncan Lambie, who's runs at goal were causing havoc on the night. All that pressure paid off as we won the game 2-0, goals by Wallace & Duncan. Although it wasn't enough to go through on aggregate, it certainly was a victory to remember! You can watch the goals on this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg54Yn5utSg
After beating Zurich in the Fairs Cup Quarter Finals, Dundee were up against the mighty Leeds United in the semi's. Leeds really were mighty back then with the likes of Bremner, Giles, Lorimer, Charlton etc, the team who eventually went on to win the trophy. This game at Dens on 1st May 1968 was a 1-1 draw, Bobby Wilson scoring for the Dee. The away leg at Elland Road ended 1-0 to Leeds, and the programme & ticket can be viewed on the Shrine - just type "Leeds" into the search box.
This programme was for the Quarter Final of the Fairs Cup. Zurich were no pushovers, having beat Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon to reach this stage. Dundee, however, managed to beat them home and away, with this 1st leg tie at Dens on 27th March 1968 finishing 1-0, a goal by Jim Easton. We also won the 2nd leg in Switzerland by the same margin, with Sammy Wilson getting the winner.
Another programme from Dundee's title winning season of 1961/62. This game at Love Street took place on 23rd December 1961. Not much Xmas joy from the game though - the match ending 1-1, a rare slip up for that season! Bobby Wishart got the goal.
