TRIBUTES OR NOT TRIBUTES - VOLUME 7 (2012)
This is Volume 7 of the collection of all-covers (100% stones free... again!). The first volume was compiled in 2006. Here are 53 new (or not so new) covers and when listening to them, remember what Johnny Ramone once said "go back and learn the history. Go back to the beginning of rock 'n'roll and listen to everything that went down".

full artwork included (booklet + inner + inlay + tray)

THE SHAZAM - TUNE IN, DROPOUTS (2007)

After the release of the much acclaimed "Godspeed the Shazam", and prior to the week before The Shazam's U.K invasion by invitation, the band made their mark at East Tennessee's public radio 89.5 WETS FM in May of 2000. This unofficial recording was released in 2007 by Parthenon Records.

BIRDLAND - BIRDLAND (1991)

Birdland's self-titled debut is rooted in the spiky power pop of the late '70s, featuring a number of speedy, catchy songs that all clock in at around three minutes. The notable exception is a pedestrian cover of Patti Smith's "Rock n' Roll Nigger," a tribute that doesn't quite work. However, that leaves enough prime material to make the record worthwhile for new wave revivalists.

Songs (RS)
1 Shoot You Down / 2 Sleep with Me / 3 Don't Look Back / 4 Paradise / 5 Wake up Dreaming / 6 Rock 'n' Roll Nigger / 7 Everybody Needs Somebody / 8 Letter You Know / 9 Beat Me Like a Star / 10 She Belongs to Me / 11 Hollow Heart / 12 Exit / 13 Gotta Getaway

WONDERMINTS - LONDON, BORDERLINE (2000)

In 2000, the Wondermints played to an enthusiastic sell-out crowd at London’s Borderline. A 1000 people compressed into a 500 capacity joint. The heat was dangerous, music biz faces abound and our heroes played a tight and classy set. They covered Goffin and King's surreal "Porpoise Song" and the Turtles' "Love in the City". More craftily, merging musical history, 1970s kitsch and a sparkling tune, they dedicated a swift jog through the UFO theme to Nick Drake's actress sister Gabrielle (or Gabriella as they rechristen her), a star of the series. The applause was both noisy and respectful and a beaming Darian says he feels like the band could play the whole country for free. CWAS #7 - Spring 2001

Special note: I got this set a few years ago on a registered website. The artwork was included

Songs (RS)
Porpoise Song / In And Around Greg Lake / Global Village Idiot / Theme from 'The Streets of SF' / Hypnolove / Invisible Paint / And Penny Knows / Dream Machine / Tracy Hide / Astro Matter / Theme From "UFO" / Cris Craft #10 / Intro / On The Run / Love In The City / Puppet Girls R Go / Galactic Patrol (Problems) / Proto Pretty / Playtex Aviary / Band Intros (cuts in) / Cellophane / Pet Sounds / Couldn't I Just Tell You

TELEVISION - LITTLE JOHNNY JEWEL (1975)

RARE first TELEVISION 7" MONO
Recorded August 19th, 1975 on a 4-track tape machine,

Television made their vinyl debut with "Little Johnny Jewel", a 7-inch single on the independent label Ork Records in 1975. Ork Records was owned by their manager, Terry Ork. The song was split into two parts, one on each side of the single. Richard Lloyd apparently disagreed with the selection of this song, preferring the never-released "O Mi Amore" for their debut, to the extent that he seriously considered leaving the band. The 7" came in a plain white die-cut paper sleeve.

Special note: This vinyl rip was made in 24 bit/96khz then dithered and resampled to 16bit/44.1khz with iZotope RX 2. It is now available in both lossy and lossless versions and comes with all the scans of the original 7" single.

Lossless (RS)

THE NUNS - THE NUNS (1980)

For a brief moment in the late '70s, it seemed as if the Nuns might be the catalyst for a successful new wave/punk scene in San Francisco. Instigated by Alejandro Escovedo as a college project, the band quickly earned media praise and garnered a rabid local cult following. But time quickly passed them by. Aggressive musicianship and demanding vocals — especially Jennifer Miro's ice-cold, intense singing — make the first album (which the group had to reform to record) well worth hearing. Lyrically, the Nuns spoke to the decadent side of life as well as anyone, with such tales as "Wild," "Child Molester" and "Suicide Child."

Another split came shortly after, and the band members started to pursue their solo careers, rejoining forces from time to time, for example in 1986 for the "Rumania" LP

Jennifer Miro (born Jennifer Anderson) died last December 2011 in New York City of complications from cancer. She was 54.

Special note: This vinyl rip was made in 24 bit/96khz then dithered and resampled to 16bit/44.1khz with iZotope RX 2. It is now available in both lossy and lossless versions and comes with the usual set of jewel case artwork.

CANDY BUTCHERS - CANDY BUTCHERS (aka The Blue Thumb Album) (1996)

Good Morning Monkey Records is proud to announce the Christmas 2012 release of
Candy Butchers

LINKS REMOVED

The album has yet to be officially released anywhere, although most die-hard fans have obtained copies in one way or another, and have unofficially dubbed it “the Blue Thumb Album.” I got a lossless rip of the album courtesy of a die-hard fan who contributes to PPC from time to time. I converted to mp3 (320 lame 3.98) and made a slim case artwork.

The Candy Butchers debut album was recorded by David Kahne in the winter of 1995 for Blue Thumb/MCA records. This record plays as a kind of greatest hits of all Mike’s best songs written from 1990 to 1996. Those were brutal years for Mike and his family.

Pete Donnelly was brought in to play bass. The album was recorded on a vintage 16 Track tape machine that gives the album that creamy tape compression sound. “David has a way of recording that was new to me. He goes for one or two takes then he edits them. I don't think I ever punched anything in while working with David. I’ve been working that way ever since

After the recording was finished the album was mixed and re-mixed several times and a potential single pulled and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Lots of money was spent. Sadly, Blue Thumb went belly up (“it wasn’t our fault!”) and the Candy Butchers debut album was never released.

Our manager shopped the finished record around but we had amassed such a debt from all the re-mixing (a decision made by the powers that had been) nobody wanted to sign us cause they’d be taking on all this debt. It was crazy. I was sitting on this record that was basically my life’s work up to that point. Knowing in the back of my mind it would never be released.”

Songs
Love's Long Sleep / / What I Won't Give / Love Like Her / I Will Not Be Afraid / Life Magazine / Catch Your Breath / Bells on a Leper / Cupid Complained to Venus / Truckstop Sweetheart / Dogmatic / I'm Not over You / Never Going back Again
