The Rolling Stones announced their 2024 Hackney Diamonds North America Tour today, and it includes a stop in Chicago on June 27 at Soldier Field. The presale takes place on the morning of November 30. General sales start the next day. Congratulations to The BoDeans on selling out their Friday and Saturday night concerts at Chicago City Winery. According to a post on the band’s Facebook page, there are limited tickets left for their Sunday night gig there.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2024 Joey’s Song Benefit Concert being held at The Sylvee venue in Madison, Wisconsin on January 6. This year’s format involves a Battle Of The Bands pitting The Know-It-All Boyfriends against The Know-It-All Girlfriends. Participating musicians include Butch Vig and Duke Erikson from Garbage (and, as any rock-savvy Wisconsin fan knows, Spooner), Chris Collingwood from Fountains Of Wayne and Freedy Johnson for the boys; and Gail Greenwood from Belly, Debbi and Vicki Peterson from The Bangles, and Linda Pitmon from The Minus Five for the girls. Joey’s Song is a charity devoted to raising money for epilepsy research and to provide services for children with special needs.

Noted blues singer-guitarist Ronnie Baker Brooks will perform at City Winery Chicago on November 22.

The Music For Mars multi-artist event scheduled for this Saturday at Metro in Chicago has changed from a benefit to a tribute, following the sad news that musician Mars Williams passed away yesterday. Williams, a saxophone player widely respected for his jazz and rock music work, had been battling cancer. His Chicago-based jazz group Liquid Soul will perform on Sunday, along with The Joe Marcinek Band and DJ Jesse De La Pena, along with special guests Jeff Coffin from The Dave Matthews Band and recording artist Ike Reilly. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 on the day of the event, and there’s a $150 table for two option.

If you still have a copy of this past Sunday’s Chicago Tribune, check out writer Hannah Edgar’s extensive and informative piece on Mars Williams.

Director Andrew Davis and his brother Richie, who starred in the film, will take part in a Question and Answer session afterward. Push Puppets, a band I’m proud to say hails from my hometown of Palatine, will be showcasing songs from their impressive Allegory Grey album at Hey Nonny in nearby Arlington Heights tonight.

Shiiine On Weekender 2023, which is being billed as “An Indoor 3 Day Festival With Accommodation Included,” will be held this weekend at the Butlin’s Minehead Arena in Somerset, England. Scheduled acts include The Wonder Stuff; Inspiral Carpets; The Primitives; Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout; Miki Berenyi Trio; and Stereo MC’s.

The Darker Waves festival takes place tomorrow in Huntington Beach, California. The lineup features several acts that launched successful careers in the 1980s and have maintained them over the decades. I wonder if he’ll bring his banjo. According to the TheaterMania website, Steve Martin is providing the voice of God in the production of Monty Python’s Spamalot now running at the St. James Theatre on Broadway. The official opening was last night.

The Unswept band will perform its catchy and clever tunes tomorrow night at the Gallery Cabaret on Chicago’s north side.

Congratulations to The Luck Of Eden Hall on selling out all the copies its The Luck Of Eden Hall - An Introduction CD on England’s Fruits De Mer indie label. And those Brits really know their prog rock. The collection pretty much includes all the tracks The Luck Of Eden Hall recorded for Fruits de Mer over the past 15 years.

The Ripleys, a covers band whose repertoire includes tunes by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and U2, has a gig coming up at the Toadstool Pub in Highwood tomorrow night. There is no cover charge.

The Chris Isaak It’s Almost Christmas Tour is coming to The Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on November 30.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical recently opened at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, and if I can trust theater critic Chris Jones in the Chicago Tribune (and I always do), this is a well-crafted and entertaining production. Jones was particularly impressed with Kaitlyn Davis in the title role and Andrew Mueller, who portrays King’s spouse and fellow Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame composer, Gerry Goffin.

The Chicago-based Nicholas Tremulis And The Prodigals will perform next Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, at SPACE in Evanston.

Tickets are now on sale for Peter Hook And The Light at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago on September 7, 2024. Hook, who was a founding member of Joy Division and New Order, will be performing songs from both the Joy Divisions and New Order Substance albums, as well as other New Order material.

Be sure not to party too much on Thanksgiving night if you’re planning to get up up early for Black Friday Record Store Day. While this holiday version is never as expansive as the April RSD, there will be several limited-edition vinyl treasures to choose from. You might also find a few items for any vinyl records collectors on your holiday gift list.

As usual, the RSD offerings cover just about every genre and era you can imagine. As for my own choices, I’m leaning toward The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album on green vinyl; The English Beat’s 2-LP I Just Can’t Stop It (Expanded); and U2’s Under A Blood Red Sky. Check with your favorite record store to see if it’s participating.

Several well-known musicians will perform at The Benefit Concert For Denny Laine being held on November 27 at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. In addition to Jules, Denny Laine Band members Erik Paparozzi and Brian Pothier will perform. Special guests include Susanna Hoffs, Denny Seiwell, Laurence Juber, Joey Molland, Micky Dolenz, Puddles Pity Party, Peter Asher, Joe Bouchard, Neil Hamburger, Tim Heidecker, Paul Shaffer, Jeremy Clyde, and Albert Lee. Following the success of her authentically gritty cover of  The Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man,” singer-guitarist Carla Olson takes a completely different approach on the next single from her Have Harmony, Will Travel 3 album. Written by Hollies founding member Allan Clarke, “It Makes Me Cry” is a country style ballad rich with heartfelt observations on human nature. It features Clarke playing harmonica and combining with Olson for the heartfelt vocals. Laurence Juber, the former Paul McCartney and Wings member, embellishes “It Makes Me Cry” with his lead guitar playing.

The Music On Stage presentation of Plaid Tidings - A Special Holiday Edition Of Forever Plaid, continues its run at Cutting Hall in Palatine through November 26.

Music For Mars: Liquid Soul Featuring Mars Williams, a multi-artist event taking place at Metro in Chicago on November 25, will honor and support the critically acclaimed jazz saxophone player. Proceeds will benefit him through the Mars Williams Medical Treatment Cancer Fund. In addition to Liquid Soul, the entertainment will include The Joe Marcinek Band and Jesse De La Pena. While Williams has impeccable jazz credentials, many rock fans first became aware of him via his work with The Psychedelic Furs. So it’s fitting that Richard Butler, Zachary Alford and Rich Good from that group will be on hand at Metro. Other special guests will include Jeff Coffin from The Dave Matthews Band; Richard Fortus from Guns N’ Roses; and Ike Reilly. Tickets are $30 in advance,  $35 on the day of the event, and there’s a $150 table for two options.

The Smithereens, with guest lead vocalist Robin Wilson from The Gin Blossoms, will perform at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The Flat Five, a super group of Chicago-based vocalists, will perform at SPACE in Evanston November 26.

As someone who’s currently shopping a YA paranormal/romance/rock and roll novel to literary agents, I was particularly interested in Chicago Sun-Times staff reporter Stefano Esposito’s profile on the recently opened and highly successful The Last Chapter Book Store in Chicago’s Roscoe Village neighborhood. Esposito notes it specializes in romance novels involving all types of people and within various settings. I’m currently working on a sequel, so maybe someday I’ll have two YA paranormal/romance/rock and roll novels for sale in The Last Chapter Book Store.

Happy Birthday wishes to Winston-Salem musician/producer Mitch Easter from Let’s Active; and Chicago musician Dag Juhlin, who’s in several thousand bands. Juhlin will celebrate tomorrow, November 16, as a member of  Courtesy Patrol at the Friendly Music Community venue in Berwyn. The band promises to “bring you musical joy in all forms - classics, deep cuts, and beyond.” There is no cover charge.

Several well-known musicians will perform at The Benefit Concert For Denny Laine being held on November 27 at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Laine, who was a founding member of The Moody Blues and Paul McCartney’s Wings, currently has serious health issues. The already sold-out event is being organized by musician Alex Jules, a longtime member of Laine’s touring band, in association with The Wild Honey Foundation. In addition to Jules, Denny Laine Band members Erik Paparozzi and Brian Pothier will perform. Special include Susanna Hoffs, Denny Seiwell, Laurence Juber, Joey Molland, Micky Dolenz, Puddles Pity Party, Peter Asher, Joe Bouchard, Neil Hamburger, Tim Heidecker, Paul Shaffer, Jeremy Clyde, and Albert Lee. KLOS Breakfast With The Beatles DJ Chris Carter will serve as host.

The Chicago-based indie rock band The Handcuffs are riding high on the success of their impressive fourth album Burn The Rails, and will perform this Saturday night at Liar’s Club on the city’s north side. The Regrettes will perform their last ever show on December 21 at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. A post on the band’s social media states, “We are parting ways to focus on other projects. There is absolutely nothing but love in our hearts for each other and you all and we’re eternally grateful.” If those other projects involve recording albums, here’s betting lead vocalist-guitarist-songwriter Lydia Night will be first to release one. At any rate, it’s sad to see a band so adept at combining punk with the 1960s girl group sound, breaking up after a relatively short run.

WXRT radio personality Marty Lennartz will drop by the Reckless Records store at 1379 N.  Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago this Saturday at noon to give away WXRT t-shirts and winter hats.

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
is now offering Induction Ceremony Programs through its online shop, according to a post on its official Facebook page. Programs from several years are available in “Limited quantities for a limited time.” I quickly went to the RRHOF shop and purchased the 2010 version, which features ABBA, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, The Hollies, and The Stooges. It’s priced at $50, but I noticed other versions, such as the one with Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith, and Van Halen, are going for $100.00. Each cover has its own unique design. By the way, I’m still waiting for the RRHOF to include The Hollies in its line of Inductee t-shirts.

Well, I’ve never been to Spain, but I kinda like Big Star music. As posted by Posies founding member Jon Auer on Instagram and Big Star on Facebook, the Spanish concert promoter Houston Party Music will celebrate its 25th Anniversary by presenting the four-day The Music Of Big Star Tour. MOJO has reached its 30th Anniversary with the November 2023 issue, and celebrates with feature stories on some of the biggest artists it has covered in that span. The spotlight shines on The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Weller, Kate Bush, White Stripes, Wilco, Brian Wilson, Amy Winehouse, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Taylor Swift, and others. I’ve been subscribing to this totally cool U.K. magazine for at least three years because it’s become increasingly hard to find it in American retail outlets.

The November MOJO also mentions that guitarist-vocalist Nancy Wilson recently informed the American classic rock station WBAB that she and Ann Wilson have been working on a new Heart album inspired by their 1970s releases.

The Spindles, Vinyl Idols, and Go Time! will combine for an evening of catchy rock at Montrose Saloon on Chicago’s north side tomorrow night.

Rolling Stones fans in Chicago can celebrate Keith Richards’ birthday a few days early when Androgynous Mustache presents Keith Richards 80th BDay Bash at Reggies with Phil Angotti And The Naughty Neighbors on December 15. The guitarist’s birthday is actually December 18, but I’m sure Keith would prefer people party in his honor during the weekend.

Leg Three of Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori Tour brings them to the United Center in Chicago this Monday, November 13.

Earlier this week, indie rock performer Juniper released a video for her new single “I Was Thinking Of You.” Like several of the tracks on her most recent album She Steals Candy, it’s a likably off-kilter reflection on romance. “I Was Thinking Of You” available to download on her Bandcamp page.

Push Puppets, a band that hails from my hometown of Palatine, will be showcasing songs from their Allegory Grey album at Hey Nonny in nearby Arlington Heights next Friday, November 17. The band’s catchy indie rock songs have drawn comparisons to Wilco, and I also hear a bit of Paisley Underground on the tracks “Sometimes The Buds Never Flower” and “There’s No One Like Lynette.”

Chris Pellnat, a Hudson, NY singer-songwriter who proclaims he “can’t really sing but I do it anyway,” on his Bandcamp page, has released a fun new single titled “Billie Eilish Won’t Follow Me.” Pellnat's clever lyrics and catchy arrangement guarantee success regardless of what he thinks of his vocal ability.

Have yourself a funny little Christmas. Cast member Desiree Burcum’s Judy Garland inspired title character will once again host Famous In The Future’s A Judy Christmas holiday revue on the weekend of December 15 – 17 at The Den Theatre. The comedy group, which I was a member of for several years, will likely offer a mix of skits and songs.

The new documentary The Stones And Brian Jones from Magnolia Pictures and award-winning British director Nick Broomfield has a general release date of November 17 at theaters and for home viewing. The 93-minute Stones And Brian Jones features interviews with numerous musicians and previously unseen archival footage.

It features Clarke playing harmonica and combining with Olson for the heartfelt vocals. Laurence Juber, the former Paul McCartney and Wings member, embellishes “It Makes Me Cry” with his lead guitar playing.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Laurence Juber perform on a few occasions at Fest For Beatles Fans - Chicago. It sure would be great to see Allan Clarke perform at one of those Fest events.

Music For Mars: Liquid Soul Featuring Mars Williams, a multi-artist event taking place at Metro in Chicago on November 25, will honor and support the critically acclaimed jazz saxophone player. Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s new tropical take on William Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night—complete with Bob Marley and Sting songs—has drawn enthusiastic reviews from Sheri Flanders in the Chicago Sun-Times and Chris Jones in the Chicago Tribune. Nelikona Cafe, the classy coffee and sweets venue that recently opened in downtown Palatine, is now hosting an Open Mic Night every Friday. There’s a piano on the premises and participants are welcome to bring their own instruments. The layout and decor, as well as the friendly staff, remind me of the popular Coco And Blu venue in Arlington Heights. Those interested in performing at Nelikona Cafe’s Open Mic can call 773-319-9437 or pop in for a visit at 45 N. Bothwell Street.

Set to an exotic arrangement, this is really a fan letter to Billie and her brother Finneas: “Judge me for a thousand things/But not for liking these siblings.” Pellnat notes namedropping Eilish in his song title is also a savvy marketing plan. “To win the algorithm game./Don’t begrudge me the prize.”
