Nature notes
The branches of the hawthorn were strung with lichen. The grey-green tassels dangled down like the wisps of a ragged beard. The resemblance to Rip Van Winkle’s facial hair suggested that this was a member of the beard lichen family. It was Usnea articulata, or string-of-sausages lichen. Among the tangled mat of beard-like tassels, fatter stems hung down like strings of sausages. This lichen does not like the modern world. Highly sensitive to sulphur dioxide pollution (produced by burning fossil fuels), the species declined in the UK during the 19th and 20th century. It’s slowly recovering. The pure air of Devon is its stronghold.
