Tages foi uma banda pop sueca formada em 1963 em Gotemburgo. O grupo consistia inicialmente em Tommy Blom, Göran Lagerberg, Danne Larsson, Anders Töpel e Freddie Skantze. Tages was a Swedish pop band formed in 1963 in Gothenburg. The group initially consisted of Tommy Blom, Göran Lagerberg, Danne Larsson, Anders Töpel and Freddie Skantze. Although hugely successful in Sweden and where they achieved thirteen Top 20 singles on Kvällstoppen, the band failed to garner any major attention outside of Scandinavia, despite several attempts by the band members. Initially led by lead vocalist Tommy Blom, for much of their career the band was led by bassist and vocalist Göran Lagerberg, who wrote a large amount of the group's material. Although the primary vocalist was Blom, Lagerberg also sang on a large chunk of their output. Rhythm guitarist Danne Larsson would also occasionally sing on certain tracks while lead guitarist Anders Töpel and the drummers generally being confined to an album track.
Consisting of a core line-up of Lagerberg, Larsson and Töpel, Tages initially were a beat band, heavily influenced and inspired by The Beatles, which is heavily reflected on their earlier singles. The group garnered much criticism from other musicians, who considered them inexperienced. This led to them quickly developing as a group, and drew influences from British mod artists, specifically The Small Faces, and like them, were the center of Swedish male fashion from 1965 onwards. The band would cover songs from virtually unknown artists in Sweden, such as John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters, but also from competitors, such as The Everly Brothers, The Easybeats and The Small Faces, something reflected on their later singles.
Between 1965 and 1967, Tages managed to record five studio albums, including "Extra extra", which was amongst the first psychedelic rock albums recorded. During the later part of their career, Tages pioneered a genre of music, combining elements of Swedish folk music with contemporary rock music, specifically psychedelic rock. In doing so, the group recorded their final studio album, simply titled "Studio" in 1967. The album solely contains original material, and has often times been considered among the best Swedish albums of the 1960s.
HISTORY
Tages was formed during the summer of 1963, initially as Tages Skifflegrupp in Gothenburg. The initial line-up of Tages included lead vocalist Tommy Blom, bassist and vocalist Göran Lagerberg, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Danne Larsson, lead guitarist Anders Töpel and drummer Freddie Skantze. Their name stems from Danne Larsson, who's middle name is Tage, a common Swedish name. They chose this due to the fact that they considered the name Tage to sound lame.
None of the members had previously played in a rock band. The group initially sang mainly sing-along songs and were influenced by instrumental rock band The Shadows. They played mostly at mostly private events, but occasionally were scheduled to play at venues. In October of that year, the group entered a talent show called "Oktobersmällen" ("The October Bang"). The band was flat out panned by the jury, and ended up last place. However, it gave them their first major performance, at Kungälv Folkpark.
In early 1964, Tages Skifflegrupp had changed their name to simply Tages, as they largely ventured away from skiffle. The group caught their first break during 13 to 17 August of 1964, when the group signed up for Göteborgs-Posten's contest "Västkustens Beatles" ("The West Coast's Beatles"). The concept behind this was to sound similarly to The Beatles, with a requirement of four members. The prize was a free recording session to the victor. Tages however, consisted of five members at the time. This problem was solved since Blom was in London at the time, a two-week vacation he took to improve his English skills, while connecting with other people at a Youth Hostel. Without Blom, Lagerberg, Larsson, Töpel and Skantze successfully made Tages into a quartet. They won the contest, garnering 600 votes out of the 1300 voting members of the audience.
Blom had by now returned to Sweden, and the band were authorized to record their first single. For this release, they chose to record a song which was written by Blom, "Sleep little girl". The first recording of the song was not recorded at a professional studio, but rather at Nylöse Ungdomsgård, where a makeshift studio had been created in the cellar. The group entered the studio on 20 September 1964 to record the song. The song features Blom on lead vocals, while Larsson plays the acoustic guitar. Lagerberg sings backing vocals on the recording. The single was released on 16 October 1964, by independent record label Platina Records. "Sleep little girl" became an immediate smash hit. It reached number 3 on Kvällstoppen in December of 1964, and topped radio chart Tio i Topp, staying eleven weeks on that chart. Due to its massive success, "Sleep little girl" was re-issued in January of 1965.
Several successful singles followed, including: "I should be glad", "Don't turn your back", "The one for you", "So many girls", "I'll be doggone", "In my dreams" and "Miss MacBaren".
Tages also produced one of the world's first psychedelic albums, called "Extra extra" in 1966. The following year, Tages produced its fourth album, "Contrast", followed by its fifth and final album, "Studio" at Abbey Road Studio, November 1967. This album is often referred to as the "Swedish Sgt Peppers", not because it sounds the same as The Beatles album, but for its originality.
In 1968, the band released the single "Fantasy island", which was followed for their last single, "Halcyon days" and, in the spring of the same year, Tages was in the Top Ten for the last time with "There's a blind man playing fiddle in the street". On August 31, 1968, Tommy Blom decided to leave the group. The other band members wanted to continue, and by June 1969 they changed their name to Blond, which resulted in the album "Blond" released the same year. After a line-up change leaving Lagerberg the only original member left, they released one album, "The Lilac years" (titled "Blond" in the US), on the Fontana label in 1969.
Though remembered as one of the best non-English bands of the 1960s, they never entered the US or UK markets.
