GBH - From Here To Reality (1990)

GBH is:

b) greasy butt holes
c) grievous bodily harm
d) a punk band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England
e) all of the above

I've heard GBH fans talk down about this LP saying things like "they went too metal", "the production sucks", or "they overdid the double bass pedal". I respond with "if you're gonna complain about something, how about that lame cover art - that is just sad next to the cover art for their previous five studio LPs". For these ears, the album has always rocked and always will. It's sonic bliss through and through and I say forget the haters. It's not my favorite of their LPs, but it comes damn close.

Guts Pie Earshot - Distorted Wonderland (1997)

Guts Pie Earshot was formed in 1991 as an experimental noise-punk ensemble in Cologne, Germany. They are associated with the DIY and squatter punk communities and often play at tiny venues with a more intimate setting. They released two LPs with singer a.Punkt, her voice adding even more to their unusual sound, before GPE became the drum-n-cello instrumental duo that they remain today.

The first LP, Distorted Wonderland, I sought for some time before finally I found a copy in decent condition. This album is a smorgasbord of noise and grooves at times ringing out with a punk fury and other times a frenetic and cinematic adventure that is never dull. The synthesis of keyboard with the cello makes for a sort of magical realism in the realm of sound. This LP is brimming over with creativity and energy that always inspires me. I'm really happy to share it with you all today. Enjoy.

Saccharine Trust - The Great One is Dead (2001 - 320Kbps)

Since the recent activity geared up here at Digital Meltd0wn, we have been trying out different servers to upload files that hopefully will have a bit of longevity. None of the ones we've tried, Depositfiles, Zippyshare, or FreakShare have been perfect, or even equal to the old days of Mediafire or Rapidshare since the attack perpetrated on Kim Dotcom & MegaUpload. Well, this Saturday, on the one year anniversary of said New Zealand attack, Kim & Company have launched a new Privacy project called Mega. This is the first posting I've done using their new service. Here's hoping...

Saccharine Trust came out of the southern California SST scene that also included bands like Black Flag, SWA, Descendents, October Faction, DC3, Tom Troccoli's Dog & many many more. The band was started by singer Jack Brewer (Jack Brewer Band, Perfect Rat, w/Bazooka, w/Kava) & Joe Baiza (Universal Congress of..., October Faction, Natassya Filippovna, & Unknown Instructors[with Mike Watt & George Hurley of Minutemen fame] in 1980. Original drummer Rob Holzman appeared on their 1981 debut Paganicons but left the band to play in Slovenly & was replaced by drummer Tony Cicero. Many musick luminaries including Kurt Cobain, Buzz Osborne, & Sonic Youth have named Sacchrine Trust as a major influence on their musick. Sonic Youth covered their song "I Am Right" on the SST compilation The Melting Plot.

This CD was only available from Hazelwood Records in Germany & was never released in the US.

Hickey - Hickey (1995 - 320kbps)

Hickey was a great punk band from San Francisco by way of Florida. I could probably write columns about Hickey, their history & adventures, personal anecdotes from their many live performances, the bittersweet tale of Matty Luv...but I think as with all great musick, the songs themselves speak more eloquently & more succinctly than can any words.

Suffice it to say that the first time I met Matty & drummer Aesop Dekker, they were still the F’Boyz (the F stands for Fuck). They were playing a party on the rooftop stage at the Dinuba Embassy in San Jose,CA. Even though it was some years prior to the Naked Cult of Hickey, they were indeed, as often, naked (well, actually Matty had a rubber chicken hanging from his schlong, but it was Halloween). When the F’Boyz folded, Hickey followed quickly in their wake adding Chubby on bass (formerly in Schleprock).

Hickey (mostly self-) released many 7“ers during their three-year lifespan, but it is this full-length album that really captures the essence of their musick for me. Aaron Muentz of Probe ‘zine was a fan & friend of Hickey’s & released their album on his own Probe Records label. There are11 songs in a brief 37 minutes. The first side is ten of these tunes in just over thirteen minutes. Then the second side is one 24 minute song encapsulating the history of the world.

Interpunk says about the band, “Hickey was a band, a political movement, a naked cult, & an uncomfortable force to be reckoned with. They were only here for a little less than three years but the mark they left on the San Francisco bay area & DIY punk scenes in general can still be felt. The UCLA Daily Bruin placed Hickey right along side such diverse bands as Nirvana, Radiohead, U2, They Might Be Giants, & Wesley Willis as the greatest artists of the 90's.”

Matty Luv died in October, 2002. There is a great memorial site with all kinds of information, guest comments, artwork & much of their (as well as F’Boyz & other associated bands) musick available here.

Aesop currently plays drums with Ludicra & Agalloch. He also does the fantastic blog Cosmic Hearse.

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

Time to punk out a bit (punkin time & all). There are so many versions of this album, you can never get enough. Being the rotten vegetarian that I am, I need my constant supply of fresh fruit.

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is the debut album by Dead Kennedys, released initially on Cherry Red Records in the UK in 1980, eventually through IRS/Faulty Products in the US, & later by the DK's own Alternative Tentacles label.

The photo on the front cover, showing several police cars on fire, was taken during the so-called ‘White Night Riots’ of May 21,1979 that resulted from the light sentence given to former San Francisco City Supervisor Dan White for the murder of Mayor George Moscone & Supervisor Harvey Milk. The copy I own is an early IRS pressings with the cover tinted orange with black lettering. This cover variation was not authorized by the DKs.


It also features the original back cover with a found photograph of an old lounge band called The Sounds Of Sunshine, with the DK's logo pasted onto the drum kit, with skulls & crossbones on their instruments. The original photograph, as found by Biafra at a garage sale, had no identifying remarks on it whatsoever. It was used because the band thought it was ‘hilarious’. Somehow Warner Wilder, the former vocalist of the defunct lounge band learned of the photo & threatened to sue the Dead Kennedys, so the back cover was reprinted with the heads of the band members cut off. This solution was also deemed unsatisfactory to the Sounds of Sunshine, forcing an entirely different photo of four old ladies in a living room with the Alternative Tentacles bat mascot pasted over a picture frame.

On the original vinyl version Side 1 & Side 2 each contained seven songs. This post-IRS, pre-Alternative Tentacles pressing on IRS's Faulty Products subsidiary adds "Police Truck" to the middle of Side 1 between "Let's Lynch the Landlord" & "Drug Me".

Various Artists - The Decline of Western Civilization OST

This record is a partial soundtrack for the movie The Decline of Western Civilization, an American documentary directed by Penelope Spheeris that was filmed in L.A. in 1979 & 1980 featuring concert footage of legendary Los Angeles punk bands with interviews of both the bands & with the punks who made up their audience.

The soundtrack was released in 1980 by Slash Records on LP & was later released in the late 1990s on CD. I believe it is now out of print.

Germs singer Darby Crash appears on the soundtrack album cover, as well as the movie poster. He died from a heroin-overdose suicide shortly before the film was released. Live preformances by Germs, Flags, Bags, CircJerks,Claude Bessey & Catholic Discipline, X’s ‘Johnny Hit & Run Paulene”, all of Lee V. & Fear...this album hits hard.

The movie contains eight additional songs by the various bands, so if you want to hear all the great musick, then seek out the film.

Assassins of God - Black Tongue Speaks Vol. I

Assassins of God appeared suddenly out of nowhere, released three albums, & disappeared without really ever causing a great stir. They played the first Lolapalooza & toured Europe often.Of their three discs, Black Tongue Speaks, Vol I is without a doubt their masterpiece. It is characterized by a dark atmosphere on songs like “I am My Disease” & “The Hate Song”, also by restless, hysterical guitar & fantastic bass runs. There are walls of sound & noise that go on to develop into the most beautiful melodies & riffs. It is hard to explain their music & I’ve never heard another band like them. They were occasionally classified as “Jazzcore”. Personally I feel they don’t fit into any category.

The members of AOG: Ken Kearney (guitar & vocals); Ellen Schoenwetter (bass); & Bruce Ducheneaux (drums) are part of the incestuous art/musick scene in San Francisco. Ken Kearney appears with the Mutants on Forensic Report. Lately Ken has been playing more straight ahead jazz backing Tracy Sirota & in his own Ken Kearney Quartet. Ken Kearney early on played in the Atones with Mark Weinstein of MX-80 Sound (& Amoeba Records owner).

MX-80 Sound were one of those bands ahead of their time, influencing bands such as Sonic Youth, the Swans & Live Skull among others. MX-80 played rather dissonant, discordant heavy-rock. Their main influences seem to be Captain Beefheart & the Stooges, yet at times they seem more akin to Pere Ubu, Television, early Siouxsie & the Banshees, sometimes even managing to sound not unlike Joy Division.

Mark Weinstein & Bruce Anderson of MX-80 Sound had a ensemble group Pluto that Ken Kearney played in along with Len Paterson & his wife Ellen Schoenwetter. About Pluto’s The Field Recordings, “There is no way to describe the music & lyrics on this LP. All the world loves a good, healthy search for a lost set of keys…” It's not exactly rock'n'roll & it's not exactly jazz. It's more like something Tom Waits might play while relaxing in the bath after a hard day banging brake drums (Pluto also features Ralph Carney [tenor saxophone, clarinet, trumpet] from the Tom Waits band).

Len & Ellen play in the group Flowtilla (formerly The Len Paterson Trio) formed in 2000. Their driving sound is an eclectic mix of funk, afro, jazz & world tinged grooves. They released their first cd under the name Len Paterson Trio entitled Sunny Cloudy. They have released two more c.d.s as Flowtilla, 2003s Out of the Inside & 2006s Clariphonic.

Drummer Bruce Ducheneaux also has an extreme musickal pedigree. He originally joined the band Bomb after they were dropped by Warner/Reprise & after original drummer Tony Flag quit. This gives him an early connection to Ken Kearney, as Jay Crawford of Bomb was recruited for the band Housecoat Project (circa 1986). Ken played guitar for the Housecoat Project on a west coast tour while Jay was on tour with Bomb. Bruce has drummed with Waycross, Cinnamon Girls, & The Primal Abyss as well as being an integral part of several Gary Floyd (of Dicks, Sister Double Happiness infamy) projects, namely The Gary Floyd Band & Black Kali Ma.

Mr. California & the State Police - I'm Gonna Kick You in the Head (2002 - 320kbps)

If the bastard son of Eugene Chadbourne & the Sun City Girls was a one-man punk band, he'd be Mr. California & the State Police. Terry Ryan is Mr. California & the State Police. He's now moved to Cleveland,Ohio but warns everyone not to call him Mr. Ohio. His album Audio Hallucinations is available but good luck finding this here slab, an ultra rare release on cult underground record label PEER PRESSURE ZOMBIE RECORDS.

Armed with a cheap keyboard, a drum machine & a guitar, Mr. California creates a blend of industrial punk mixed with blast beats of thrash & odd interludes, electronic anarchy mixed with a warped sense of humor. Mr. California & the State Police sound like the music of the pre-teen younger brother of someone from Men’s Recovery Project. Fifty-two really short songs in less than 30 minutes with vocals providing insults, childish behavior & other insane ramblings set to a fast beat with distorted guitar. There are songs like "Hot Coffee" that remind me of early Black Flag while tunes like "Pig Eye Poison" (She's a witch [x3]/first she stabs the eye/then she takes the broth/cleans up the mess/cleans up the rest/pig eye poison [x4]/yeah) that remind me of the Sun City Girls heritage. The world should prepare itself for this weapon of mass destruction. Mr. California & the State Police might very well be insane -- or at least attention-deficit . Blistering noise worthy of Lightning Bolt. This is demented no-wave music that flies in the face of all conventions.


This record is pressed on beautiful marbled blue vinyl, the cover has pasted-on silkscreened & spraypainted cover art, totally DIY. Comes with lyric sheet, Please Don't Call Me Poser ("Poser") drawing by Mr. California & a cool sticker. These songs are so short & many run one into the next that I have simply left each side as a single cut (side A tracks 1 - 28, side B 29 - 52). Mr. C says he's gonna kick you in the head, so be forewarned. Enjoy!

Cringer - Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sa Rembo Chari Bari Ruchi Pip Peri Pembo

Really the main reason I posted this was so I could write 'Tikki tikki tembo no sa rembo chari bari ruchi pip peri pembo'. I always wanted to do that. Also I am a big fan of Lance Hahn (Lance passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2007, due to complications from kidney disease). I've seen both Cringer & J Church many times at Gilman St. & other Bay Area venues & parties. There are mixed feeling about this release, but Cringer was a true voice of their time & place when this came out. The Bay Area anarchist punk scene was just exploding at this time. Lance had taken over the vocal duties from Gardner who was now concentrating on bass. Derek Imose, from Hawaii was playing drums. Lance was now singing his own lyrics, bringing a much more personal delivery of his mix of political, personal, & sometimes impressionistic songs.

Cringer started in Hawaii in 1984 with Lance Hahn, Ed Tarantino, Gardner Maxam & David Carr. Lance & Ed had previously been in the straight edge/skatecore band, Scarred For Life. David had been in several different bands including the Vacuum & Devil Dog. Gardner had been in Hawaii's first hardcore band, the Sharx. This line-up played several times live on KTUH & recorded three demo tapes: a split with Scarred For Life, We Are All AOK & The Vinegar Tasters. They relocated to Los Angeles in 1986. The group got their major debut with a track from an early demo appearing on the Mystic Records compilation, We Got Party. Hooking up with Vinyl Communications in Chula Vista, this line-up recorded their first 7", Perversion Is Their Destiny.

David & Ed split soon after the 7" was recorded. Francis Sippin from Free Will joined on vocals for a short period of time. Simon Barry, who had previously played in the UK anarcho band Flowers In The Dustbin, joined on guitar. This line-up recorded the second 7", Zen Flesh, Zen Bones as well as tracks for the Exclusion compilation on Nabate, Metal Gives Us A Headache on Hippycore & "Cottleston Pie" for The Thing That Ate Floyd on Lookout.

Derrick Imose from Hawaii joined & Simon eventually split. Nigel Wong joined & the group recorded their first album, Tikki Tikki Tembo No Sa Rembo Chari Bari Ruchi Pip Peri Pembo.

Life... But How To Live It? - Self-titled LP

It is my holiday break from school and it feels weird to suddenly have time on my hands. It's hard to escape this awareness that I am just going through the motions again this holiday season. Sometimes I feel like screaming and breaking things. How amusing that I still haven't "grown up". I thought with time I would feel less alienated from the people in my life. Calling long distance relatives I haven't spoken to in a year to speak to them for five minutes sure is ridiculous. How can I condense an entire year of life experience into a five minute conversation? There are things I want to say everyday, but when I pick up the phone my mind goes blank.

If it were not for music I would have left this place long ago. In the immortal words of Jimi Hendrix, "Music is my religion." Sometimes, a forgotten and rare record by an obscure punk band like Norway's Life... But How To Live It? gives me salvation right when I need it most. Look at that cover art! How great is that?! I hope this imperfect noise helps you as it helps me this winter.

I typed up the lyrics for the first song because I found it quite appropriate:

Sleater-Kinney - Live @ The Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR - 12-30-2005 (320 kbps)

Portland, Oregon's now disbanded Sleater-Kinney probably don't need an introduction here, but for those who don't know them I'll give a brief one. Sleater-Kinney was originally formed in 1994 by vocalist and rhythm guitar player Corin Tucker and lead guitar player Carrie Brownstein in Olympia, Washington. The band was a vehicle for their anger, frustration and feminist politics. As time passed, their punk sound became more refined on each album with Brownstein, Tucker and drummer Janet Weiss turning out to be marvelous and passionate musicians. The band eventually split in 2006 for reasons that I won't speculate on here. I have no doubt that they will reunite someday for another album and another tour and maybe then I can finally see them play live.

This is a bootleg soundboard recording of decent quality. It may not be 100% perfect, but that is what I love about it. And the performances are raw and boisterous and punk as hell, as they should be. When I put on a S-K album, most of the time I put on the their final 2005 album The Woods, although I do love most of their previous albums. It is such a pleasure to hear these songs from The Woods played live, unpolished and lacking the over-production of the CD. Hearing them do a noisy encore cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Fortunate Son put smile on my face, too. It really doesn't matter if you have never heard this band before, a bootleg live recording is just a good a place to start as the studio albums. Enjoy.

The Mekons - Original Sin (1989)

I’ve been meaning to post something from the UK band Mekons for a while now. They took the band's name from the Mekon, an evil, super-intelligent Venusian featured in the British 1950s-1960s comic Dan Dare. One cannot pick a Mekons album as representative of their sound because each record sounds different. Their 1985 classic Fear and Whiskey is proclaimed as their best album by many critics and fans. I don’t know if it is their best, but it is my favorite from the six I have heard. While that album has been reissued and is available for purchase, what is not in print is this 1989 CD that compiles the tracks from the LP plus bonus tracks from a string of EPs that followed. I’ve found a few snippets from other sources that I will quote to help you decide whether to grab it, and grab it you should.

The music is a mess of influences united on the bones of punk music. The Mekons always subscribed to the "anything goes" rules of Britain's "Class of '77," and Fear and Whiskey is their most famous example: this was the record where they started to assimilate country music. It was a radical move in mid-80s Britain, not least because of the right-wing politics that were associated with the style. Musicologists have labelled this the father of alt-country, that bastard offspring of indie rock and country/western-- though for as much as you hear it on "Darkness and Doubt" (complete with a John Wayne reference), or the cover of Hank Williams' hit "Lost Highway," country is just one of the styles jammed in here, along with English folk, Leeds punk, and whatever else was at hand. Anyone who expects scenic Americana will stop short at the second song, "Trouble Down South," a weird mini-drama that would bring a lesser album to its knees: Ken Lite narrates some kind of a military advance over a reggae-inflected drum machine and a wheezing accordion, while soprano Jaqui Callis struggles to hit her highest notes. As far as it fits here at all, it's to force the listener to accept that the Mekons are ready and willing to do whatever they want.

"It's problematic and contradictory, but at the height of the Reagan/Thatcher alliance, with market capitalism running rampage, and American imperialism having its second or third wave, there was a bunch of anarchist lefties in Leeds who were fascinated with Hank Williams and Bob Wills. "I can’t really explain it, but it really resonated with us," Langford continued. "I found country music to be a very powerful form of folk music. It was about drinking, cheating and stories that seemed to be about people’s actual lives. We thought punk rock would be like that. We thought punk could address reality in a political way. But when I heard Merle Haggard and Ernest Tubb, and hearing the simplicity of those songs? That was punk rock, and they were doing it a long time ago."

Tom Greenhalgh, one of the primary creative forces in the Mekons, commented that as he listened to a great deal of country & western music in the early 1980's, "pretty soon the difference between the three chords of country and the three chords of punk became blurred." The album closes with a cover of Leon Payne's "Lost Highway".

The album's lyrics describe a dark scenario of a community struggling to retain its capacity for joy and humanity through a devastating war. Rock critic Robert Christgau described it as "sort of concept album about life during wartime".

Friction - Atsureki (1980 - 320kbps)

Following the events in Japan over the course of this past week has been distressing. How the situation has been handled by mainstream US media has been a complete failure. I would like to present two facts: a nuclear meltdown to the likes of Chernobyl is not eminent and not all of Japan was hit by the tsunami. Mostly the north east coastline, Sendai region, and some parts of the south eastern coastline was hit. While the companies get the nuclear situation under control, the average Japanese in those regions face loss of: heat, electricity, food, personal belongings, loved ones, and in some cases shelter. Although the entire nation was not hit, the coastlines were populated enough to raise the estimate of dead and missing individuals to 12,000 since the previous estimate of 4,000 some days ago.

Personally, the figure does not matter since I believe that the loss of life on any scale should always be mourned in some fashion. With that, I would like to extend my condolences to the survivors and anyone else affected by this disaster. After posting Enos, I was toying with the idea of at least making a mention of events overseas but what pushed me was a request Zero sent us [the other contributors] asking if we could post something from Japan. My words may not mean much right now and I am pretty broke so the best that I can do is share a great rock classic from Japan with you all today.

Shortly after getting into punk music in general, I stumbled upon the beauty that is no wave. The band that stood out most for me was Teenage Jesus and The Jerks. Their music and Lydia Lunch were equally captivating in their audacity and creativity. So I was pleased to learn that their bassist, Reck, reinvented his old band with Chico Hige once he returned to Japan after their time in New York.

Friction originally formed under the name Circle Triangle Square in 1971 then 3/3 in the mid-70's. This band is considered to be one of the pioneers of alternative rock in Japan. More information:

Originally formed in 1971 as an avant-garde music group by bassist Reck, saxophonist Chico Hige, and drummer Sakuro Watanabe in Tokyo, Japan. They changed the bands name to 3/3 in the mid 70s, and Reck and Chico later moved to the United States, where they would join the band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and later became the original founding members of James Chance and the Contortions before returning back to Japan.

Renaming 3/3 to form Friction, they recruited guitarist Tsunematsu Masatoshi, who had studied art at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music. They released a live album and single in 1979, and their first studio album, Atsureki ((軋轢, meaning 'friction' in Japanese) in 1980, produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Today I will be focusing on their 1980 release, Atsureki. This album is amazingly complex. It has a very classic punk feel to it that strongly reminds me of Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols and X. But then you get certain intervals in songs that are distinctly more inharmonious than the already very dirty rock being played. The track “Big-S” is a great example of this. All throught this song is a crazy guitar riff that sounds like someone sliding an object along the strings. About 1:35 minutes into it, the misanthropic guitar riff gets it's own solo with stable rock beats being played on the drums and some very audible bass in the background. Which brings me to how audible the bass is in the entire album as is the saxophone. The former I appreciate and the latter I appreciate only in this album (I normally can not stand saxophones). The saxophone is excellently presented in the most sleazy fashion in “Cycle Dance” and “Out.” By the way, this is a very addictive album. You have been warned.

La Fraction - La Fraction EP (1996)

La Fraction is a punk band that formed in Paris, France circa 1992. In 1996 they self-produced this 3 song EP. All proceeds of its sale went to the EZLN. There is a very lengthy message from Subcomandante Marcos (I wonder if that is him on the cover), but it is in French. I’d love to know what it says. I have included the full album art. This EP is also known as Guerre D'espérance, the title of the first song that translates to "War for Hope".

It's another classic punk 7 inch. Every song on here, especially the first one, has the quality of being an anthem. Bands that make anthems like this hold a special spot in my heart. Part of the charm for me is in the super distortion and great reverb. Who am I kidding? Magali’s fantastically catchy vocals are stealing the show.

Red Dons - Death to Idealism (2007, Brazilian Press LP 2009)

Once upon a time there was a band called The Observers. They were short-lived and I didn’t come to appreciate them until they were no more. Fortunately, right around that time former members were teaming up with some other fine folks to bring us Red Dons. They take their moniker from a mysterious group of Cambridge University professors who were Soviet spies during WWII.

It did not take long for Portland, Oregon’s Red Dons to become one of my favorite bands. When I first heard them, I don’t think I had even finished listening to the first side of the LP before I fell in love. This comes from the out of print 2009 LP for the Brazilian tour. It sounds quite different compared to the original pressing that featured a very lo-fi mastering of the album. That lo-fi mastering is part of what endeared it to me. It went hand in hand with the lyrical topics of the album, like feelings of alienation, dying hopes, consumerism, and tyrannical fascist dictators. When I heard the Brazilian LP master though, it was like a rediscovery. It is so cool to have these two different versions of this album, one of the catchiest, most intelligent and inspiring punk records I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, and I’ve heard plenty. There have been comparisons of Red Dons to many great punk and post-punk bands of the 1980s, but there is something about the Red Dons that makes them even more indispensable for me. The totality of their art goes right for my heart and does not let go. The urgency and passion with which singer Douglas Burns delivers his lines is infectious. The music makes me wish I was at the show jumping around in the crowd. The album clocks in at just over thirty minutes, and if you are like me you will be playing it over again immediately.

Honestly, everyone should give this a listen. If this album does it for you, I implore you to buy their latest album Fake Meets Failure, which could not be a more perfect sequel for Death to Idealism. Red Dons are gearing up for a European tour in April and May. If you live near any of the places they are set to play, I recommend you mark your calendar and GO TO THE SHOW!

Penis Flytrap - Tales of Terror (1998) & Dismemberment (2001)

Penis Flytrap is a name that will make any man fear for his crotch. Fortunately their music makes up for their cringe-inducing name. I wanted to go with something a bit more fun, but not too over the top to contrast with my last post. While Penis Flytrap may not be a name that many people are familiar with, some of you may be more familiar with the lead singer, Dinah Cancer. For the uninitiated, Dinah Cancer is the legendary former lead singer for 45 Grave, and considered to be one of the pioneers of the Deathrock genre. I've always been quite fond of her instantly recognizable voice, which has such a sinister quality to it that I really love.

Ironically Penis Flytrap wasn't the first band Cancer belonged whose name promoted violence towards the male reproductive organ. In the early 80s she broke into the music scene with the all female punk band, the Castration Squad, which was formed by Alice Bag of The Bags. She played a small role in other projects before joining the band that most would associate her with, 45 Grave. 45 Grave are considered on of the originators of Deathrock and helped form the style and sound that would become known as Goth. 45 Grave came to an unlikely end in 1991 shortly after lead-singer Rob Graves decided to ignore his doctor's advice and up his daily dosage of heroine slightly too much. Nearly 13 years, Cancer, along with Rikk Agnew of Christian Death, reformed 45 Grave with a new lineup.

For years Cancer turned down offers to return to the music scene, stating that she wanted to wait till her daughters were old enough to understand what she was doing. After a 7 year hiatus she finally joined the group Penis Flytrap. Only one album was released with Cancer on board before she left along with drummer Hal Satan to form Dinah Cancer and the Grave Robbers. As I mentioned before, these albums manage to be enjoyable, and manage to strike a fine balance, remaining dark and enjoyable without crossing into the territory of cheesiness. The songs are all based on various horror-inspired subjects, with a nice touch of black humor thrown in for good measure.

According to a message posted on the band's official myspace page, all three albums by Penis Flytrap are currently out of print. They announced that Dismemberment was going to be re-released with brand new artwork, but it is beginning to look like that might not ever happen.

Misfits - Halloween 7'' Single (1981 - FLAC)

On October 31st of 1981 the Misfits would release a 7" single that would serve as a new defining Halloween anthem for almost all who heard it for. This happens to be one of my favorite Misfits songs, right alongside "Bullet" and "Die, Die My Darling". Only 5,000 of these were released on Danzig's own label, Plan 9 Records. Since this is a Halloween "Countdown", I want to make sure that I get this posted before October 1st passes. I'm sure you all have become accustomed to me posting Wikipedia articles lately due to my lack of available time to write an adequate review, so I hope you all won't mind yet another.

"Halloween" is the fifth single by the horror punk band the Misfits. It was released on October 31, 1981 on singer Glenn Danzig's label Plan 9 Records. 5,000 copies of the single were pressed on black 7" vinyl, some of which included a lyrics sheet.

The "Halloween" single was the last Misfits release to include guitarist Bobby Steele. Both songs on the single had been recorded in August 1980 for a planned album. During the sessions bassist Jerry Only was grooming his younger brother Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein to join the band, and Doyle recorded his own guitar tracks and overdubs separately in addition to Steele's. The tracks were mixed in September, but in October Steele was ejected from the band in favor of Doyle and the planned album was scrapped. Five of the songs were released as the 3 Hits from Hell EP, while "Halloween" and "Halloween II" were released as a single. In 2001 Caroline Records announced attempted to release the complete sessions as 12 Hits From Hell, but production was called off after Danzig and Only expressed concerns with the album's layout, packaging, liner notes, mixing, and mastering. The lyrics to "Halloween II" are in nonstandard Latin, translating to:

Ancient formulas of exorcisms and excommunications
That witches and those made wolves believe
I maim now the demon clothed in wolfskin
Having to hide in the hollow of a tree
I say werewolves can change shapes

Following the band's breakup in 1983, "Halloween" was reissued on the 1985 compilation album Legacy of Brutality with overdubbed guitar and bass tracks recorded by Danzig. The original versions of both songs were re-released on Collection II in 1995, and all of the versions were included in The Misfits box set in 1996, along with the original studio recording of "Halloween II".

Mudhoney included a sample of "Halloween" in their 1988 cover of Sonic Youth's song of the same title on the "Touch Me I'm Sick"/"Halloween" split single. "Halloween" has been covered by several other bands in subsequent years: AFI covered the song for their All Hallow's EP (1999), and Dropkick Murphys recorded a version for the compilation Back on the Streets: Japanese/American Punk Unity (2000) which was later re-released on Singles Collection, Volume 2 (2005).

Danzig re-recorded "Halloween II" with his post-Misfits project Samhain. This version appeared on November-Coming-Fire (1986) and Live 85-86 (2001). "Halloween II" has also been covered by Tenebre on the tribute album Hell on Earth: A Tribute to the Misfits (2000) and by Cradle of Filth on the Underworld: Evolution soundtrack and Thornography (2006), though Cradle of Filth's cover is based on the Samhain version. - Wikipedia"

New Christs - Dropping Like Flies EP (Double 7")

This little gem was originally posted on the first Ausrock blog, which was removed by blogger. It hasn't reappeared on the new blog, so I thought I would post it here as requested.

The New Christs were originally formed by Radio Birdman and New Race vocalist Rob Younger after he was offered the support spot on Iggy Pop's Australian tour of 1984. The other members had played in groups such as Celibate Rifles, Lime Spiders and Hoodoo Gurus. The tour proved a success and the band stayed together, recording the two singles Like A Curse and Born Out Of Time for Sydney independent label Citadel Records. These releases gained universal acclaim for their tough and uncompromising nature. With the prospect of an album deal and European tour, the other members instead chose to return to their former interests. Younger was left to pursue a career producing some of the finest upcoming Australian alternative bands.

In 1986 Barracudas bass player Jim Dickson returned to Australia from the UK and together with Younger started a new line-up. Featured were Charlie Owen, a gifted but as yet unknown guitarist and drummer Louis Burdett who soon left to be replaced by Nick Fisher who had played with Ed Kuepper and Wet Taxis. This line-up released a series of hard hitting singles Black Hole, Headin' South, Another Sin and the EP Dropping Like Flies. These tracks were compiled under the title Divine Rites, whose European release allowed the group to tour there for the first time.

X-Ray Spex - Live at CBGBs March 17, 1978 bootleg cassette

Poly Styrene & X-Ray Spex were something of an anomaly, a female fronted band of the original British ‘77 punk movement with no real antecedent & no real parallel. Their sound, style & energy were strictly their own. They were always one of a kind. They never took themselves too seriously, yet had enough ability & unique attributes to make their own way. They were the epitome of the punk movement...start playing live shows after just one practice, release a few singles, one album, & have a personal point of view.

In March of 1978, X-Ray Spex played a short residency at CBGB's. This recording came from their March 17th show. Judging by musick levels & audience noise, this was probably recorded through the soundboard. 12 songs, 2 encores & pretty good sound for what it is.

“It’s 1978, & the crowd at CBGB’s are belligerent, maybe expecting Malcolm McLaren’s media demon juggernaut The Sex Pistols to fire off a trade mark drunken set. Poly’s on stage in a leather apron. She’s got her hair curled in 1950s schoolgirl ringlets, a couple of dominoes pinned to her lapel & a golliwog doll hanging round her neck. Into the chaos, over the puking & fighting she yells out, “Some people think little girls should be seen & not heard, but I think…” & there’s a pause, the crowd pull in closer & Poly yells again, “Oh Bondage, Up yours! One, two three, four". The Spex break into their furious sax driven hit. The place goes wild. For a moment it seems the kids are listening. It seems like somewhere in the nihilism & self destruction of late 70’s punk, there’s room for a young girl from Brixton with something important to say. Poly flaps her arms and bounces around the stage, hot & hip despite herself, leans into the mic, “Chain-store chain-smoke / I consume you all / Chain-gang chain-mail / I don’t think at all” . Stop, freeze frame. Hold her steady now. There she is on the right, mid-verse, iconic in black and white, twenty one forever.”

Xmal Deutschland - Tocsin

Xmal Deutschland formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1980, originally an all-female band.Founding members included: Anja Huwe - vocals; Manuela Rickers - guitar; Fiona Sangster - keyboards; Rita Simon - bass; & Caro May - drums. Their first single, "Großstadtindianer" was released in 1981 on the ZickZack label. About this same time, Rita Simon was replaced by Wolfgang Ellerbrock. In 1982, a U.K. tour opening for the Cocteau Twins resulted in a label deal with independent label 4AD Records.

Xmal are masters of eerie, gothick musick sung in their native German, with beautiful bass driven melodies & searing, though icy, guitar lines.

Tocsin, Xmal Deutschland's second full-length album is arguably the bands creative high point. It is undoubtedly less bleak than their first record, but by no means saccharine. These songs are somewhere in the middle ground between the neo-psychedelic 4AD tradition & the more aggressive sound of Xmal’s earlier offerings. The tension created by the disparate styles serves the band well. This is some tasty blend.
