Sir Bobby Robson R.I.P.

Its very sad to hear of the death of Sir Bobby Robson this morning. Fans of such teams as Fulham,Ipswich Town,PSV,Porto,Barcelona and of course his native Newcastle United amongst others will be very upset at this news. Bobby was the England Manager came closer than any other since '66 to leading our nation to World Cup victory and was only a penalty shootout from the final at Italia '90. As a Chelsea fan,I have alot to thank him for as it was Bobby who helped and encouraged a certain Jose Mourinho more than any other to get into coaching and we all know how good he turned out don't we. I also feel quite privledged to have met him in person albiet briefly back in the late 70's when he had time to give this kid an autograph and have a quick yap.

Raise a glass to Sir Bobby Robson,a football man,a genuinely great guy and a true legend of our game. He will be sadly missed by any true football fan.

Sham 69 - You're A Better Man Than I 7'' (1979)

Well as I'm off to see Sham tonight in Plymouth,a Sham post seemed appropriate. This was their cover version of The Yardbirds You're A Better Man Than I and in my opinion,a great cover it is too. The back of the picture sleeve is signed by all of the band too. Not so sure about the TOTP's performance though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YghKhoJojrk Look at Purseys hair,Dave Kermits shades and Dave P's strides and you'll see what I mean. Its hardly a Borstal Breakout is it? Any street cred left = out the window!
I'll be in Reading tomorrow watching this seasons English Premier League Champions so they'll be no posts.

Court Martial - Gotta Get Out 7'' (1982)

Hailing from the wonderful city of Bristol where the locals call ideas "ideals" its one of the many great bands that were on the Riot City Label,Court Martial. One of my favourite releases from the whole label, the fabulous Gotta Get Out was a cracking little number.

With accents like those in Bristol,I'm not surprised they wanted to get out! Just kidding Bristolians :-)

Snuff - Chocs Away CD Single (2002)

This is one I grabbed off Soulseek a while back. One of the many great releases by London's own Snuff. Tracks 1 & 2 are also on the Disposable Income album but track 3 is not. Enough Said!

The Beautiful Game

Its back very soon and for some us its back already (getting up at stupid o'clock in the morning to watch a meaningless friendly over in the USA) On Saturday I'm off to Reading (no doubt with a hangover after seeing Sham on the Friday) for another meaningless friendly. 400 mile round trip. I think I'm mad but thats nothing compared to mates lad who drove up to see Macclesfield vs Middlesborough last weekend (he's a Boro fan...poor sod!) Dedication at its highest though when you consider he lives here in Plymouth.

Anyway the reason for this post is for the Football fans amongst us. I need your input for the following questions.

Who is going to win the Premier League this season?
Who is going to win the Championship?
Who is going to win League One?
Who is going to win League Two?

If you had asked who was going to win the Prem a month ago I would of said Liverpool but after they signed the defensive liability that is Glen Johnson and after what I've seen of my beloved team online in America, then I'm unbiasedly tipping Chelsea. I think we have the strongest squad and I'm hoping Man Utd will miss Ronaldo too much. The Gooners look weak and Man City will have to worry about the likes of Everton and Villa before they can invade the top four. What they lack is a defensive leader. They should try to sign one don't you think?

For the Championship,I've got a feeling Ron Keane will get Ipswich up there but my outside each way tip at 25/1 is Leicester City. Although they have just come up to this League, its not uncommon for teams to get successive promotions and they look a decent bet. I can't see Newcastle,Middlesborough or WBA going straight back up although I'd like the Baggies to do it purely for Roberto Di Matteo being the Manager.

League One is a differcult one but as long as Leeds don't go up,I'm not really bothered. My tip is Charlton.

League Two I'm going to resist Sven-mania and go for Bradford City. Why? I dunno!

What about you lot?

The Flys - Name Dropping 7'' (1979)

The City of Coventry here in the UK is famous for few things........getting bombed heavily in WW2,having a shite football team and The Specials. Well before the Specials came about there were The Flys. Often refered to as a punk/powerpop/mod band but a good band they were. Nothing they did ever touched their fantastic Love & Molotiv Cocktail single in my humble opinion (still one my favs after all these years) but this is not too bad.

The Jam - Just Who Is The 5 O'Clock Hero 7'' (1982)

I always think of this one as the "forgotten" Jam single. Not sure why but if I remember rightly this single wasn't on the original "Snap! Jam singles. Maybe thats the reason (or maybe I'm just waffling as usual) The English Polydor release of this has an extra track on it (War) but this is the German Polydor release so its only got the two songs on it.

The Lurkers - New Guitar In Town 7'' (1979)

This was the last Lurkers single before they split up first time round back in '79. As much as I love the A side I'm even more fond of their cover of Little Ole Wine Drinker Me which was originally a hit for Dean Martin back in 1967.

Theatre Of Hate - Live Promo EP (1985)

I'm not 100% on this one but I think this released in '85 to promote the Live In Sweden LP. Whether thats right or wrong, hopefully someone will tell me but one thing that is certain is that TOH were a bloody brilliant band!

Defiant Pose - Someone Else's War 7'' (1981)

These lads came from Paisley up in Scotland and as usual I'm a wealth of "unknowledge" about them. I knew they were on a 4 track 7'' ep entitled "HaHa! Funny Polis" along with Urban Enemies,The Fegs and XS Discharge in 1980 but unfortunately I don't own that one. It is on a blog somewhere,Im certain but I'm damned if I can remember where. This one was released after that one and its a fine piece of vinyl (a tad crackly of course but alot better than some of my efforts)

New Model Army - No Rest 12'' + Freebie Live 12'' (1985)

I love New Model Army. Always have done. Always will do. As its gone 4 0' clock in the morning and still I cannot sleep, then it seems an appropriate choice of song! Well thats not strictly true as I'm staying awake to watch Chelsea play Inter Milan! The B side (Heroin) is a powerful song and the band are fierce anti-heroin campaigners. When they were on TOTP's with No Rest, singer Justin Sullivan was forced to cover up his T-shirt with tape to hide the message "Only Stupid Bastards Take Heroin" (Well the "Bastard" bit anyway)

Tracks 3,4 & 5 are from the freebie live 12'' which came with the original 12'' and although they are top-notch songs, they aren't top-notch recordings.

The Vibrators - Baby Baby (Re-issue) 7'' (1982)

This was The Vibrators comeback single in '82 and is a revamped version (and not quite as good version in my opinion) of their 1977 song which is widely recognised as one of Punk Rock's genuinely great love songs. The B side is different from the original 7'' too. Both of these songs were also on the "Guilty" album.

Infa Riot - Kids Of The 80's 7'' (1981)

The Max Splodge produced debut single from Infa Riot. The two brother in the band (Floyd and Lee Wilson) were originally from the Devonport area of Plymouth (something I wouldn't wish on anybody at the time!) They moved up to London and teamed up with the other two members of the band and a couple of years later, this cracker was released on the excellent Secret Record label. In my opinion its the best song they ever did - well both tracks are great!

Stiv Bators - Its Cold Outside 7'' (1979)

The world is a much poorer place without the legend that is Stiv Bators in it. The Dead Boys were one of my favourite American bands,I loved the Wanderers (probably because of the totally biased Sham connection) and as for The Lords Of The New Church..........well they were just a supergroup weren't they? I wasn't as keen on Stiv's solo stuff but I've always liked this Danny Klawon penned classic which was originally a hit for The Choir back in 1966. Poptastic!

The Last Words - Todays Kidz 7'' (1979)

Moving Down Under, here's the second single by Sydney's Last Words. The bands first single (Animal World) was what first brought the band to my attention via some UK radio-play and is much better than this one in my opinion but this ain't too bad either. They are the only two singles that I actually own of the band although there was a third single and an album I believe. Don't quote me on it though as I'm usually wrong :-)

Tom Robinson - Rikki Don't Lose That Number 7'' (1984)

Steely Dan originally did this one back in 1974 (I think) To be honest,I never did like it and I don't particulary like this version either. The 80's was a great period for the "cheesy" picture cover and the back of this one is certainly no exception.

The Brian James Gang - New Rose 2006 CD Single (2006)

Its always nice when you get sent something good in the post and to my surprise, this arrived just after its 2006 release via Mr Brian James himself. On my old youtube page Brian had spotted some old Lords Of The New Church footage he didn't have so through a message from his manager, contacted me and asked if I could send it his way which I did. And this was my reward.

Everyone knows New Rose was the first British Punk single and everyone knows that Brian James wrote it so this was a 30th anniversary celebration kind of thing to celebrate such a classic. Anyone that liked The Lords Of The New Church would also know track two as well (Sham and Lords fans will be pleased to know Dave "Kermit" Treganna plays bass with The Brian James Gang too) The song V.I.P. is on the self titled Brian James Gang CD album which is available to buy cheaply enough and is recommended. What this CD single does have that you wouldn't of heard if you don't own it is a 45 minute interview with Brian at the end hence the size of the file. Its interesting stuff if you can get past the "cafe" background noises.

Public Zone - Naive 7'' (1977)

This one was another that came from the "bargain bin" at a hefty 20p. I won't lie,I know absolutely nothing about this band. This is more powerpop than Punk and as far is I know (which is very little) this was their only single. If you know different, then don't be afraid to educate me! Needless to say,its a tad crackly.

Sex Pistols - The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle 7''

I'm back and as unmotivated as ever after a nice little break. Thanks to the people who have commented on here while I've been away and I'll be around to my "usual" blogs later to annoy you all when I have a little more energy :-)

I've always loved this one which is more than I can say about the LP of the same name. Okay,it had a few half decent tunes on it but basically it was a mess (just like the film) One particular company that weren't too impressed with this picture cover were "American Express" but I can't think why.

The Undertones - Its Going To Happen 7'' (1981)

I never realised it at the time and it wasn't until recently when I watched an Undertones documentary, that this song was about the IRA hunger strikers. The day the band were in the Top Of The Pops studio doing this single was the day that Bobby Sands died - hence the black arm bands during the show. Looking back now, that must of been pretty brave of the band considering the tension in Northern Ireland (looking at it from an outsiders perpective of course)

To be honest,I didn't rate this at all at the time but like alot of stuff,I do like it now. I'm away for the weekend and will back posting either Monday or Tuesday depending on my hangover. Have a good weekend folks.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - Monkeys On Juice 12'' (1984)

I don't know what it is about The Lorries but I've loved them ever since I first them. Lumped into the "goth" catagory by most, lumped into the "brilliant" catagory by Longy.

A little story about this one. I first heard it on either Anne Nightingale or John Peel's show on Radio One and instantly loved it. So on the Saturday,I went into town and promptly asked for the new Red Lorry Yellow Lorry single in the shop. "Whats it called" they asked. To be honest I didn't catch the title on the radio so I replied "Monkeys On Drugs" When the bloke in the record shop had picked himself up from the floor after a hysterical laughing fit he eventually dug it out for me.

One of my oldest surviving records. Amazingly the A side is still in pretty good condition but the B side is a bit crackly. Pre-punk,there wasn't many bands that were any good to my ears but T-Rex (along with Slade and Sweet) were one of them.

V/A - Ramones Forever: An International Tribute CD (2002)

This is the only Ramones tribute CD I own. I downloaded the other 60 odd that I have collected from Soulseek. This one is a bit different from most as the vast majority of these bands are not trying to sound like the Ramones (The Huntingtons being the noticable exception and of course The Marky Ramones group) My favourite here is the Dancehall/Ragga version of Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue (track 6) which for some reason tickles the crap out of me. You certainly won't like all the tracks on this I'm sure but like I said,at least its different. Click on the 2nd cover for the tracklist.

Peter & The Test Tube Babies - Banned From The Pubs 7'' (1981)

While we are at it lets have another No Future classic. This was the PTTB's debut single and in my opinion, their best one too. I've always had a soft spot for Peavehaven Wild Kids but I like the other two songs alot as well. I saw this band in '83 at Fiesta in Plymouth and it was a great gig. My sisters band Hysteria were supposed to be supporting but unfortunately due to Caroline being unwell that day they didn't play. The camera went to this gig hoping to get some Hysteria photos but instead it took some dodgy photos of the Test Tubes.
