Red Dirt/Alt. Country

sábado, 26 de abril de 2014 Matt Edwards & The Lonely - Leave The Bottle (2014)

Matt Edwards is a singer/songwriter who shares his life experiences like a drunken prophet preaching of life, love and loss. Edwards has a great rasp, a solid wail, enough twang and drawl to straddle the line between country and rock (and it is most definitely both), one that is to his credit and will appeal to a wider audience of southern true believers and Austin and NW alt-country lovers.
Backed up by The Lonely, a tight, punk-blues driven rhythm section and exceptional yet tasteful guitar talent, Matt Edwards brings a raucous, diversified sound to any venue. Too country for rock, too rock for country, Matt Edwards & The Lonely defies classification but brings an indelible, undeniable sound that any audience will remember.
Give them a beer and ten minutes, and 2 hours and a 6 pack later you won't have scratched the surface.

sábado, 12 de abril de 2014 Dave Hause - Devour (2013)

Dave Hause wears his heart on his sleeve in his latest solo release, Devour, as he presents a personal, melancholic collection of meaningful rock songs; a sort of concept album touching on issues as diverse as social mobility, chasing the American Dream and modern technology.

It’s the sophomore solo effort for Hause (pronounced like pause), the frontman of the disbanded American punk band The Loved Ones, who has recently gained respect as a solo artist touring his first solo release Resolutions. Featuring songs were originally written for The Loved Ones and bringing in famous friends from bands such as Frightened Rabbit, My Morning Jacket and Social Distortion, Devour features less acoustic guitar and more complex songwriting and creative melodies than its predecessor; think Springsteen with a tinge of punk.

‘We Could Be Kings’ was the first single released from the album. An electric guitar-driven rock tune, it tells a heartfelt tale which shouts out to the people who were once told that they could achieve anything if they put their mind to it, but sadly life got in the way of even their best-laid plans. Together with the first few tracks, it explores the sadness involved in chasing the American Dream, and you can tell that Hause speaks from experience. ‘Autism Vaccine Blues’ is as interesting a track as its name suggests, asking if a cure was invented for autism, would the cured patient regret receiving treatment or be able to adjust to the stressful complexities of modern life.  The franticness and confusion is displayed in the music with clever, and perhaps tongue-in-cheek, lyrics: “My car won’t charge, my phones out of gas”.

lunes, 31 de marzo de 2014 Clay Cook - North Star (2013)

Douglas "Clay" Cook (born April 20, 1978) is a songwriter, producer and musician who co-wrote several songs with Grammy-winner John Mayer including "No Such Thing", "Comfortable", and "Neon". Cook and Mayer's songwriting partnership was predominantly through Mayer's early career, as the songs he wrote with Mayer (with the exception of live releases) only appear on Mayer's first two releases, Inside Wants Out and Room for Squares. Cook and Mayer formed the band Lo-Fi Masters prior to Mayer recording Inside Wants Out. Cook is currently in the Zac Brown Band and was formerly in the Marshall Tucker Band and Y-O-U.

lunes, 18 de febrero de 2013 Todd Farrell Jr. & the Dirty Birds - Where Fake Cowboys Go To Drink (2012)

"Not much beats good old Southern rock and Todd Farrell is part of the new breed of Southern rockers that are lighting up ears all over the South. His debut album Where Fake Cowboys Go To Drink is a collection of tunes about heartbreak, loneliness and bad decisions. Yes the subject matter is a constant in music, but Farrell’s lyrics, rowdy guitars and vocal delivery that ranges from smooth & melodic to loud & aggressive (think punk rock) make his tunes stand out. On “Black Lab (Dog Day)” he takes a look at getting older. Friends have settled down, are getting married, starting families and leaving him alone. Touching on the subject of relationships, Ferrell goes about that a bit differently. The song “Take It Slow” details a series of poor relationship decisions leading to thoughts of taking things slow in the future and on “Ain’t My Year” he questions a woman’s choice to be in his life. Heart break is a recurring theme, more so on these three tracks than the rest of the record. “Pocket Full Of Rainchecks” delves into rejection, while “Hey Julie” and “Amanda, I’m Sorry” deal with breaking someone’s heart, one being remorseful, the other not so much. Todd Farrell is a talented singer/songwriter and in an environment where TV shows and media conglomerates mass produce singers like a copy machine, it is refreshing to listen to new original music like his."

miércoles, 26 de diciembre de 2012 The Hotshot Freight Train - Poetic Devices And Personal Vices (2010)

The Hotshot Freight Train formed in January of 2005 with the desire to create a brand of music that reflects the spirit of the people of Appalachia. Resultantly, the band’s style can best be described as Americana/Narrative rock. The band’s moniker is derived from a common literary device used by beat poet Jack Kerouac to accentuate the sound and the excitement of fast moving, high priority trains that were often used as transportation by migrant workers and transients alike.

The Hotshot Freight Train draws musical influence from numerous bands and genres.  However, the bands greatest inspiration comes from great American story tellers who bring their art alive by creating works that speak to the culture and the hearts of their audience.  These would include musicians and songwriters such as Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young as well as southern literary figures like Cormack McCarthy and Flannery O’Conner.  The ultimate intention of the music and songwriting is to simply tell a story that captures the mind, imagination, and spirit of the audience.

The band’s newest album, Poetic Devices and Personal Vices, is a collection of songs based on the experiences and reflections of growing up in the South. The songs rely on both personal and fictional narratives to portray various social issues that have become synonymous with life in Appalachia.  Ranging from struggles with alcoholism and feelings of spiritual conviction in songs such as My Jerusalem and Down in the Valley, to songs of broken marriages and relationships like I Love You Now and Fools Gold, or narratives of murder and domestic abuse such as The Misfit and Cortisol and Cold Hearts.
