Tuesday Blue - Shibumi (1988)

Big rock. Originally a trio with a drum machine. Barry Warner provided keyboards for an early lineup, Tom Jones (ex Average Contents / Toucandance) (keyboards/rhythm guitar) in later years. Liam Darcy was replaced by Ray Fean who'd played in one of Richie Laurence (AKA Larry Richardson)'s bands. The band spent about a year working on their LP during 1987-88, playing few gigs. This period seemed to cure them of their tendancy to drift in Simple Minds/Genesis and yielded new arrangements of songs like "Tunnel Vision" and "Tell The Boys". The LP was recorded in Montreaux in Switzerland with Bowie producer Dave Richards. It was released at the end of 1988 in the USA and in March 1989 in Europe. Tuesday Blue certainly nailed their sound on their debut album but too many of the songs lack memorable melodies or pop hooks and too often the bands sound favours bombast over subtlety. Most of the band members of the band are still active. Mike Ryan and Ralph Lindheim still perform regularly in Limerick. Dave Keary toured with Riverdance as did Ray Fean, who was later with Coolfin and had done lots of session work.

Cactus World News - Urban Beaches (1986 | 2001 Reissue)

Cactus World News wastes no time in making a first impression on its debut album Urban Beaches. The opening track "Worlds Apart" explodes from the speakers with screeching, reverberating guitars, tumbling drums, and fervent vocals. The anthemic chorus and breathtaking energy of "Worlds Apart" will remind listeners of U2's "I Will Follow " in its feel and execution. However, despite similarities to the music of fellow Irish band U2, Urban Beaches is a smart, hypnotically melodic album bristling with youthful exuberance and sparkling musicianship. The impassioned singing of Eoin McEvoy on "Worlds Apart," "In a Whirlpool," "The Promise," and "The Bridge" is contagious; after hearing him bellow "Worlds apart, worlds apart/Closer than I've ever been/To you" a few times, listeners will find themselves mouthing the words or perhaps singing it in the shower. Frank Kearns' driving, electrifying riffs magnify the urgency in McEvoy's voice; nearly every track has thrilling, dramatic guitar playing. Urban Beaches should've been a hit in the U.S.; instead, it became a buried treasure in the cutout bins.

Best Of The Boomtown Rats (2004)

The Best of the Boomtown Rats features 19 of The Boomtown Rats greatest hits. The Boomtown Rats were an Irish punk rock band that had a series of Irish and UK hits between 1977 and 1985. They were led by vocalist Bob Geldof.

All six members were originally from DĂșn Laoghaire, Ireland. Formed under the name "The Nightlife Thugs," the group agreed on the name change to the "Boomtown Rats" after a gang that Geldof read about in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory. They became a notable band, but one whose accomplishments were overshadowed by the charity work of frontman Bob Geldof, a former journalist with the NME magazine. [wiki]

A House - On Our Big Fat Merry-Go Round (1988)

On Our Big Fat Merry-Go-Round is the debut album of Irish rock band A House. Released in 1988, the album reveals a taste for driving, catchy guitar rock somewhat in the style of U2. The lyrics are full of attitude, including attacks on journalists ("That's Not the Truth") and production team Stock, Aitken & Waterman ("Stone the Crows"). The lyrics evoke violent imagery as well; song titles include "I Want to Kill Something," "Watch Out You're Dead," and "Violent Love."

The album contains the raving "Call Me Blue," which reached number nine on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart in December 1988.

I'll Always Be Grateful (Lyrics)

Nine long months you've spent thinking of me
And all the following years
Spent between the laughter and tears
Self-denial you gave, too good to shout it out loud
There's a second love, but blood is thicker than skin

I'll always be grateful
I'll always be grateful
I'll always be grateful
For you

And the man's done his best with those old-fashioned ways
And I know you've tried hard, I can see it in your face
If I had of known then what I could have known now
I hate to patronize and even more I hate to criticize

(chorus)

I must be painfully dull to do what I have done
By not showing love to those people that I love
But, still you accept what I've done proving time and time again
That someday I realize, but by then it's all too late

(chorus)

And I'll never be hateful

The Adventures - Theodore and Friends (1985 | 2009 Re-mastered)

Theodore and Friends is the debut album from the Irish rock band The Adventures, released in 1985.The album contained four minor UK chart hits; "Another Silent Day" (UK #71), "Feel The Raindrops" (UK #58), Two Rivers" (UK #96), and "Send My Heart" (UK #62) which was a hit in Germany and also featured on the soundtrack to the horror movie Demoni the same year. The album reached #65 in Germany, but did not chart in the UK.

Lead vocalist Terry Sharpe and guitarist Pat Gribben first worked together when in 1978 they joined punk band The Starjets. The band experienced limited success and disbanded in the early 1980s. Sharpe and Gribben then formed The Adventures in early 1984 with Gribben's wife, Eileen, Gerard Murphy, Tony Ayre and Paul Crowder

The album was reissued on compact disc in the UK in July 2009 under the Lemon imprint of Cherry Red Records. The reissue includes the original album with several bonus tracks.
